'Homophobic'

I just don't like that word, it doesn't make sense to me.

A phobia is a fear, so "homophobic" would mean a fear of gays.
Technically it means fear of the same. Homosexualphobic would make more sense (as a word, not as an idea), but would also be awkward to use

OT: Most terms that have become widespread since the rise to prominence of the internet annoy me. I seem to be prematurely becoming a grumpy old man.

How does that not make sense to you? Homophobics hate and fear homosexuals.
Hate, yes, but not fear.
In a non-clinical setting, phobia frequently encompasses terms like dislike, or aversion.

And really, outside "buttsex is icky," I think most arguments boil down to afraid of being around/being hit on, afraid of children being converted or afraid of being converted themselves.

Or I suppose, fear of hellfire and damnation, either for self or others.
I have a phobia of snakes though, and you don't see me picketing the zoo protesting snakes rights to live with other snakes in the reptile house. They're just intolerant.
Well, I assume you don't think seeing snakes in a zoo is going to make your children a snake. Or yourself turn into a snake. Or that having snakes in a zoo will encourage people to bring snakes into other areas/activities.

Besides, just because you are rational about your fears, it doesn't mean everyone is.

Religion. If there's one word I don't want to see on the internet again, it's religion. Whether you're a pastafarian nun or an evangelical atheist, keep it to yourself!

Oh, and if our friends from the U.S. could refrain from talking about their political system, that'd be just swell. I don't mean to single you out, but boy oh boy does it drag on and on and on. Also, there seems to be some confusion on the difference between "Left-wing" and "Liberal". They aren't the same. But don't worry about that. Just keep it under your hats and we can start being civil to each other.

Touche good sir, however I do remain a strong proponent of no snakes in schools and all school related activity. Damn slithering snakes!

'Decimate'

Apologies to anyone who was trying to get in before this one cropped up. So often misused and it actually makes me flinch.
Which is sad because no one ever knows the definition either. They just think it means to destroy something, but it isnt because it is not the word destroy.

Analysis.

My god, it seems to be used by the most pretentious motherfuckers on the planet. My AP English teachers beat this word to the point where it lost its original meaning. Now whenever someone uses it, I can't help but wonder "Are you just saying that to sound smart?"

Pretty much all "internet speak." LOL, LMAO, PWN, it all annoys me to no end. I guess I'm just an old man.

Off topic: OP, are people saying you have a sense of entitlement, because I feel like there's a little personal resentment there?

Edit: Oh crap, how could I have forgotten about "theory." The colloquial usage of the word "theory" is different from the scientific usage, and people keep mixing that up. That stupid misunderstanding has set back the general acceptance of evolution (in America at least) by years.

About the Aluminium vs. Aluminum debate.... They're spelled differently, thus are they pronounced differently. You can thank Webster's dictionary for that one. Also for the removal of "u" in words such as "color" and the use of "z" in words such as "realize".

OT: for me it's "lol" for some reason my eye twitches when someone uses that on me.
Another one is "XD" though that just be my inability to see it as an emoticon. I always read it as "X, D".

Phobia means an irrational fear, so it kinda fits if you think about.

Also, "I could care less." No, it's you COULDN'T care less. If you COULD care less, that means you still care.
Words cannot express how much I agree.
Anyhow, this seemed appropriate.

Geez, I can't believe how many people get upset over pronunciations. Jesus, whether you pronounce Aluminum with or with out the extra syllable you should both know you're talking about that thin metal used to make CANS!

OT: As for me the two "words," and I use the term 'words' extremely loosely, that I can't stand are 'pwn' and 'emo.' The first I can't stand because a) It was born born out of some idiot's typo b) Because it defies what I know of the english language, namely that words are supposed to have VOWELS in them in order to actually be considered words, and that's not counting prefixes and suffixes. As for 'emo' the sound of it just grinds my nerves to powder. It doesn't help that people tend to slap it on anyone who shows the slightest emotion other unrestrained joy and glee.

Are you serious? Sick of that phrase.

HalfTangible said:
The phrase 'Just kidding'.

Mostly because somebody apparently decided that means 'I was wrong' or 'i made a mistake'.

Now i want to punch someone everytime i hear it. *twitch*
I'll gladly take "are you kidding me?" over "are you serious?" Most of the time people say are you serious when the situation is very clearly real and happening. There is no reason to call it into question.

Shut the fuck up. Stop it, now.
If we want to use the word 'douchebag' then we will, thank you very much good Sir.

Anyway, it's already been mentioned, but "Irony" or "Ironc". Not because I hate the word or what it is, but because so many people get it so very wrong.

Um...

You spelt Pronunciation wrong...

Just thought id capitalize on that irony.

worst word in the world: tight, as used as to convey that something is impressive, or expensive or whatever Turk lovers use it for...

As for myself?
I'm not a huge fan of how people use epic for things that are quite mediocre, though I suppose it's all subjective anyway.
