Be wary. The Escapist, while a great place for discussions of all kinds, tends to be very anti-apple.

The ipad looks like a pretty bit of gear, comparing it to a netbook, you'd probably get more mileage out of the netbook. But, from most people, I've heard there's no easier or better way of surfing the internet. Games are just started to get interesting on the idevices so i'd say it's worth a look-in, but i personally couldn't justify buying something like an ipad while my netbook works fine and plays starcraft.

The way I like to look at it, despite how many people try to deny it, is like a giant iTouch with a few more capabilities.

My Mom bought a good laptop for less then half of the price of a iPad. I say its probably not worth it, and the laptop has a touch screen.

It's worth it if you have alot of money to spend for something that doesn't give THAT MUCH back. You can get a laptop for half the price and do much more with it.

tl;dr? If you're rich get one, if you're not then don't.

There are many cheaper alternatives that surpass any Apple product. Never buy an iproduct unless you want to waste almost double of what you would have gotten for cheaper on a shiny, fragile piece of shit.

Let me also add. if/when you're resolved to buying one, hold off for a few months. Apple may release a new ipad, and guaranteed you'll feel like a fool not owning the latest shiny apple gadget.

Apparently, the big draw of having an iPad is how you can use it in business. I'd get one if I was going to be making documents on the fly or making power point presentations to show people personally. As a leisure tool... No, it looks crap. Apparently you can read a book on it but why would you need it to read a book? You could just carry a book around with you.

As with most Apple products, it's overpriced. Though it can use a cellular connection anywhere, which is kind of nice, while the iPod Touch and a laptop (right out the gate anyway) can't. Some might also argue the app access and additional portability is nice.

Either way, I can't justify the price tag.

apple is overpriced for what you can get with an ordinary computer. also if you are one of those people who likes to be able to fix or modify software then you can forget it with the ipad since you cant do either with apple software in general

The TV and Monitor industries have been doing this for their entire existence and I've yet to seem THEM called out on it.

But then I guess mindlessly bashing them wouldn't make you "cool".

No, they're not worth the money. They're decidedly worse than a comparable - and probably cheaper netbook, with an operating system that has several million less applications than Windows 7, sub-par multitasking and which needs to be tethered to a PC anyway.
I agree however i'm kind of a convert to the tablet thing now and will get one after I see the first honeycomb and playbook reviews.

I've become a huge fan of touch interfaces, and i've stopped looking at them as netbook replacments and they look much more appealing. However OP I would never get an iPad now as ipad 2 is around the corner plus you have the playbook, Tab, and honeycomb tablets coming q1 q2 2011. That and I like the 7in form factor.

If you do get one, be sure to get this case for it:

I wouldn't buy it if I were you. It's just a large iPod and definitely isn't worth the money.
