I can't find an anime good enough for me since Ghost in the Shell.

Wow I didn't expect so much help thanks a lot guys. I probably should of said what I have seen already but it is good for other people to see. I love Satoshi Kon's work and have seen most of his stuff. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood was amazing and way better than the original IMHO.

I'd suggest the following if you want deep stuff.

"Ghost Hound"
"Serial Experiments Lain"
"Welcome to the NHK" (a personal favorite in this area)
Yus these three...

Serial Experiments Lain is my favorite anything ever...

and actually most anything from Chiaki Konaka or Yoshittoshi ABe... the two minds behind the show... and some stuff by Ryotaro Nakamura, the director... though honestly his filmography is pretty mixed... but Abe's is basically a laundry list of real stand outs...<.<

Haibane Renmei...
Texhnolyze...
NieA_7...
Armitage III...
Birdy The Mighty...
RahXephon...
Parasite Dolls...
The Big O... Kind of...<.<

Even Digimon TAmers had it's moments at the hands of Konaka... besides we all know that was the best season and the only one I can call actually good...

but other than there filmography...

Ergo Proxy...
Boogiepop Phantom...
Paranoia Agent...
Sci Fi Harry... kind of...<.<
Mushi-Shi...
Appleseed...

just off the top of my head...

also The Ghost in The Shell movie... I didn't like the show at all... although closer to the manga in tone and characters... the movies were really the highlight with the much more mature and unique tone. the way it handled it's themes and setting better was much more coherent and impactful as well... wh

Edit: also Evangelion... it was pretty good... even though the ending of the show and the movie just ruined the entire series for me... the show because it has no closure and was generally crap... and the movie because it also had no closure, left the plot an unraveled mess and was rage inducingly pretentious in every respect...<.<

Edit: Also keep an eye out for Despera... it's been put on hold for now but it looks promising since it's basically reunited the three minds behind Serial Experiments Lain...

Why does nobody on this website ever mention Evangelion? And only one Cowboy Bebop mention at the time I wrote this? I am disappoint, Escapist. Also, FLCL, for something simultaneously mature and childishly upbeat. Just do it. And don't discount films, either - Akira is a classic for a reason (even if it is kind of incomprehensible).

I did try watching Death Note once and found it incredibly overhyped with fairly bland characters and shoehorned philosophical debate. Just my opinion, though.
I must say that the less said about Cowboy Bebop, the better. Yes, it's a total classic but seriously everyone who's ever heard of anime knows it and if they don't, then good. As a medium we should really stop considering it MUST WATCH FOR EVERYONE EVER and move on to something at least a little more recent, or at least branch out and go "What do you like to watch?" instead of just recommending it to everyone who shows even a vague interest in anime.

Anyway, here's my obligatory Welcome to the NHK recommendation. Or Mawaru Penguindrum if I care so much about how recent good animes were made.

Welcome to the NHK shows goes very deep into the lowest of the low. Dealing with NEETs, Hikikomoris, people who got caught up in pyramid schemes, suicide, whether to follow a predestined path or follow your own way, etc. Very good and while the first 3-4 episodes are all wacky perverted humor it starts to get really serious half-way through.

Mawaru Penguindrum, which came out recently, I can't really describe. It's confusing, and every episode gives you just enough information about everything to keep watching. Though it's really interesting if you get a chance to watch it.

I think I must've posted this video on every anime recommendation thread I've come across, but here it is again.

Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories.

One of the great underappreciated works in the media.
