Perhaps try some oldies? Whenever I'm in a gaming slump I dust off my trusty N64 and play some OoT. Nothing quite brings back memories of days when gaming was the greatest thing in the world to me like some good old fashioned Zelda.
oh, I've tried that as well. I brought my Game Cube to university purposely to play OoT - I really, really thought I wanted to play it - but after a single dungeon I couldn't go on.
I must say, I'm truly saddened by your condition. I recall one time I was in such a state. I just didn't play games for a very very long time, and eventually my appreciation and enjoyment came back. Gamers and the games we play have a very complicated relationship. It's a great one, but sometimes we just need some time away from each other.

It doesn't help that each of the games you listed are current-gen shit. I can't say I've lost my interest in gaming, but I've been focusing on 10-year old+ games and they have been holding my attention far more than anything new. I suggest anything that ran on the Doom engine, or maybe something new and "casual" like Plants Vs. Zombies. Anything that can be played in smaller, digestible sessions instead of long, epic sandbox games that never end.

I would rent dragon age at least. If it doesn't draw you in then you might just have lost your love of games for good.

Go learn something, (guitar, flute, boxing, how to make a videogame ect).
Eventually you'll get the itch to game again! (Works for me, but my gaming put-offs are extremely temprary, (about a week max! XD))

maybe you could try a different form of gaming? I don't mean going Wii...that's never the answer. Maybe table-top gaming (don't laugh) could scratch that gaming itch? Warhammer 40k seems to have a few fans here on the escapist. And you could also try (also NOT joking) some sort of pen and paper RPG. I've neither tried either myself, but they are both technically forms of gaming, just not of the "video" form.

I can't really get in to very many single player games myself, when I call myself a gamer its about sitting on vent with a few guys playing the same few games we have been playing for years like cs,quake, dota, starcraft and so on.

Oh I was never very good but I enjoyed the hell out of it, was all about the atmosphere and the rising mountain of red bull cans on my desk at 5am. I don't really do that much anymore with me and the guys I played with busy with other stuff so I have ended up playing very few games at all now.

oddly I still consider myself a gamer

I have a bit of game ADD/OCD too. I want to play through lots of games to be able to just learn more about the art of gamemaking, but I have trouble getting into games- and games that I really get into I play for months. So if you find any kind of therapy that works, let me know.

Well what kind of games were you into when you were a gamer-by-nature?
mostly RPGs, like Final Fantasy. The last game that really grabbed me though was Fallout 3. but I've always played around with other types of games, like Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Mario, Zelda...

Lately I've been craving to play games, but when I do play them I get bored pretty quick. Assassin's Creed II, Mordern Warfare 2, Saints Row 2, Persona 3... I even tried replaying my favourite game ever, Final Fantasy IX, but it's just not happening. Should I be glad that I've lost this nerdish impulse to venture forth in a videogame world, and simply go back to reading all the books I've never finished? Or am I just not playing the right games?

Is there anyone else who posts here that doesn't play games very much?
I was the same until Mass Effect 2 came out. I had barely touched any of my games for about a month and then Mass Effect 2 came out and i havent been off it since. It even made me go back and play my other games
I lack an Xbox. Dragon Age Origins interests me, though. It's something I've been thinking of getting for a while now, although I'd have to risk paying for it, hoping that it holds my interest.
Dragon Age is an epic game. If you like lengthy medieval RPGs with an awesome story,i would suggest getting it

You seem like a candidate for gamefly, that way you don't have to commit and its ok to get bored quickly, you can just move on to the next

I find watching another person play a game can reignite my desire to play it. I got bored with Fallout 3 (don't kill me!) back in February, but watching my housemates give it a go really worked to get me back into it.

Seeing the weird and interesting ways other people approach games is a great way to rediscover a game you thought you were done with ;)

I started re-doing the Half-life 2 saga, got to the start of episode 2 but now I have work so I can't play.

I just make sure if I play a game again I've left it long enough such that I won't be bored. You might need more games.

I totally sympathize, although lack of motivation has more to do with my recent coursework than anything else. I think it helps if you take a step back from games for a while. Either play some short casual games or, if you have a weekend, play something epic but completely different from what you've been playing lately. It also helps to play with friends. ;)
