Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, just stay away from Howl (Its not bad, but its their folk/country album which doesn't seem to line up with your taste).
The 1975 are my favorite new band of this year, a bit indie, but still pretty rock based.

One Day As A Lion is RATM's vocalists side project, and more or less the same. Flobots do a similar sort of style on their first and second albums (I found the third a bit dull).

Green River or The U-Men are a couple of old school grunge bands that're a bit off radar, and have the more punk oriented sound that later grunge kind of fell off of.

Mondo Generator is the band of Nick Olivieri (formerly in QotSA with Josh Homme), and has a relatively similar sound, with some more punk/metal flavoring to it.

Thenewno2 are a prettygood band in a similar vein to Radiohead.

And yeah, LastFM, RateYourMusic, or Pandora are all decentish places to sign up to get recommendations.

So I've been browsing itunes for like 3 hours now and I've come to the conclusion that either my music taste is horrible or music is dead and indie is the only thing left that can satisfy me.

So I'm going to give you guys a list of bands that I like and lets see if anyone can find any similar music (I still can't find any)
If you don't mind harsh vocals, there's always Kvelertak. I fucking love these guys so much. They play a mix of hard rock, hardcore punk with a splash of black metal for good measure. Their riffs are incredibly catchy, and you'll be singing along even though you have no idea what they're saying (assuming you don't speak Norwegian).
Oh, and that owl thing in the first video? Yeah, he actually wears an owl during live performances for some songs.

The second band is Protest the Hero. They're a prog-metal band from around Toronto that also plays super catchy stuff. Keep in mind that there's a lot going on in their songs, it might be a little overwhelming. The lyrics are great though and the music is just fun!

Stone Sour is great as well. It's frontmanned by Corey Taylor from Slipknot and they play alt-metal goodness. Their double album is actually an autobiography for Corey and it's great even ignoring that.

Then there's Aibroune. They might as well be an AC/DC cover band. They have a similar 3-chord style, play fast hard rock, singing is high, two of them are brothers and they're Australian! Here's the kicker too, they play great music!
That's Lemmy Kilmister driving the truck by the way. Little did I know that he's a trucker when he isn't playing in Motörhead or fucking.

These are just some simple ones. There were lots of great albums this year, hope you like it!

This might be outside your music tastes, but I recommend The Wonder Years highly. Pop-punk with mature lyrics and amazing vocals and musicianship.
