Provocative thread title ftw.

Whenever I'm using my headphones I can't help but chew on the wire, this results in one or both sides of the headphones breaking very quickly. I go through almost one pair of headphones every months because of my chewing. At the moment I don't even notice that I'm doing it most of the time.

Does anyone else have this problem, does anyone else know how I can stop myself from chewing on my headphones?

You could dip them in something that tastes horrible.

Or, if you really want to stop yourself, dip them in something poisonous. Even if you screw up and forget, it'll only happen once.

Want to know how to fix this, find something else to chew. I chew on plastic things like pens. Or I just constantly chew gum. Damn my oral fixation.
So do that and you shouldn't be chewing on any wires.

Yeah, but you have to get the right gum.
For me, trident is a nice consistency because even after the flavor is gone, it still has a texture worth chewing, and doesn't decentigrate in your mouth and get stuck to your teeth.

Might I suggest going gum-shopping during your next outing to the grocer? I mean, its gum. Unless you buy a horrendous flavor, you're going to use it anyway. Don't be shy.
Gum with larger quantity-for-package tend to be better for long-term chewing. And, of course, make sure you're buying sugar-free chewing gum, or your dentist will chew you out for bathing your teeth in sugar.

Well, you're aware of your problem, so I'm not sure what else you can do but consciously try to notice when you first start doing it and stop. Eventually it will be a habit.

When I noticed my front teeth had perfectly flat tips, that motivated me to stop grinding them. Just try be alert for when you start doing it.

get a tongue ring. then you'll allways have something to play with and you'll never need a cord or gum or anything else ever again.

Oh yeah, had same problem, it's very annoying. I stopped, though. What I did was piss on my headphone wire, so that everytime I started chewing on it I tasted my own piss... Okay that was stupid and unfunny! No! I just stopped. I don't know, it wasn't that hard. Just try to tuck it in somewhere in your shirt or something, where it won't stand out. And if that doesn't work, trim it, or buy a new set with a very short wire, so you wouldn't be able to pull it up to your mouth.

On a somewhat related note to OT, I bite the crap out of my fingernails, to the point of occasionally drawing blood...any ideas?

Wireless headphones!

I have a pair, I do chew the charging cable, but if I do eventually break the cable, you can get cheap replacements off ebay (uses the micro usb connector).

Yer, wireless headsets tend to be pricey, but I do like the fact I can wander round without realising in a bad way that I'm still attached to my PC.
I have the Logitech G930 headset. Also like the fact that if I move the mic outta the way it mutes, so I'm unlikely to have it unmuted if I'm in a situation I don't want to transmit audio (cos I naturally move the mic away if I'm not chatting).

My advice comes from personal experience: Develop a different unconscious habit. For me, I shuffle cards. It allows your brain to relax and focus. Use overhand shuffle as it is quieter and is easier to make a habit out of.
