A collection is a bunch of stuff together. My furniture collects dust. My mailbox collects mail. I don't think "collectors of X" is an elite club of highly trained and dedicated connoisseurs, it's just people who collect things, into collections.

I really like this thread. The OP is being sort of elitist and stuff but in a good way. At least it's a passionate post. I enjoyed reading it a lot more than most whiny threads that are about nothing. Good job OP.

Stop using words you don't know the meaning of.
No... You stop using words you don't know the meaning of!

Collector(n): A person or thing that collects.
Collect(v): To accumulate; To make a collection of.
Collection(n): A group of objects accumulated in one location

In no place does the definition specify an amount(of said object or knowledge of said object). You simply need to accumulate something to be a collector. I have a collection of about a hundred metal bottle caps in a jar, but I don't even know what beverage most of them came from. I still collect bottle caps nonetheless.
What is occurring in this thread is a contextual distinction between what the OP perceives collecting as and how it was used in his anecdote. Believe it or not, quoting dictionary definitions does not apply here. Yes you are technically correct but you understand what he's saying right? This thread isn't about how certain people misunderstand the term "collect" and what it denotes. It's about frustration with fair-weather fans in a certain sub-culture.

I don't mean to be rude but I think you and many others have missed the point of the thread in favour of a nitpicky response that really doesn't promote an interesting conversation. Is it just me or is this a common recurrence on the internet?

It's a common occurrence, doubly so here on the forums.

OT: Man, you just laid down a whole bunch of stuff about dice I didn't even know existed. Do you have a particular set/sets that you use for your everyday dice needs?

Erm, it appears he's saying that other people don't use the word as he does and that they should stop actually using it the correct way and subscribe to his own niche definition, which, incidentally, is highly elitist in nature.

Dice collection? I learned something new today. My answer is this, OP:

You're using the 'no true scotsman' fallacy.

Anyone can call themselves a collector, if they so desire.
They do not need to meet an arbitrary set of minimum requirements, set down by you.
I rest my case.

Well, if we're going the elitist route, then here's a litmus test: Do you own a zocchihedron?

]

If we're going the sensible route, if you have a bunch of dice you think look neat, then you're a collector.

God bless you, Captcha: "Geez Louise".

you dont have to be hardcore to be a collector. I collect random shit that looks cool as hell, and thats all id be able to describe it as if you asked my why the hell i have this stuff in my house. I used to collect dice, or at least if i saw a die that looked interesting and neat Id get it. so I probably have 35 or so in a jar that are different shapes sizes and uses.
