What is occurring in this thread is a contextual distinction between what the OP perceives collecting as and how it was used in his anecdote. Believe it or not, quoting dictionary definitions does not apply here. Yes you are technically correct but you understand what he's saying right? This thread isn't about how certain people misunderstand the term "collect" and what it denotes. It's about frustration with fair-weather fans in a certain sub-culture.username sucks said:No... Collector: A person or thing that collects.
Collect(v): To accumulate; To make a collection of.
Collection: A group of objects accumulated in one location
In no place does the definition specify an amount(of said object or knowledge of said object). You simply need to accumulate something to be a collector. I have a collection of about a hundred metal bottle caps in a jar, but I don't even know what beverage most of them came from. I still collect bottle caps nonetheless.
It's a common occurrence, doubly so here on the forums.Thespian said:Is it just me or is this a common recurrence on the internet?
Erm, it appears he's saying that other people don't use the word as he does and that they should stop actually using it the correct way and subscribe to his own niche definition, which, incidentally, is highly elitist in nature.Thespian said:Yes you are technically correct but you understand what he's saying right?
I rest my case.TopazFusion said:You're using the 'no true scotsman' fallacy.
Anyone can call themselves a collector, if they so desire.
They do not need to meet an arbitrary set of minimum requirements, set down by you.
