I could use some phone advice...

All right, here's the deal: I'm looking for a new phone, and this time, I'm going to get a smartphone. Trouble is that there is so much choice, considering I don't really care about the costs. (talk about a luxury problem) So I was hoping that you guys would have some good advice. Experiences with your own phone, friends phones, anything. I only have two demands: 1) It can't be an iPhone. 2) It shouldn't be too big, like that Samsung Galaxy SII (have you ever noticed how freakin' huge those are?)

If you're not going iPhone, you need to decide between the Operating Systems. Do you want a windows phone, an android, or whatever that thing HTCs run?

From what I've seen, HTCs are the most competent at just being phones, with the least flashy apps to play with. Windows phones look cool to me but that's all down to personal taste, and android will have more flashy games to play.

If you don't want an iPhone though, I recommend you get a proper phone with buttons. You'll save money, won't get outdated in a nanosecond and can avoid having to say 'Yeah, the iPhone's probably better' about a year from now.

Well that depends entirely what you want to use it for. Do you want to use it to listen to music, to play games, to watch videos, go on the internet etc?

And if you want a 'top of the range' phone then you'll need to get a larger screen. Other than iPhones the screens on high end smartphones are usually 4 inches and above.

The single best phone I've ever had was the HTC MyTouch 4G (only available on T-Mobile, I'm pretty sure - which sucks because T-Mobile sucks). It's android, it's fast as hell, tons of features, and it's slick looking/feeling. Second was the Sony (Ericsson) Xperia. Also fast.

Good job not getting an iPhone. I traded my myTouch for an AT&T iPhone and it blows. It's the only Apple product I've ever owned that I hated.

Whenever somebody asks me for a smartphone advice - I just tell them to go with Android. I like Android - it's like iPhone but better. Or at least cheaper. Besides, I'm not a huge Apple fan.

As for actual device model - I don't know. I have a Samsung Galaxy S and I'm happy. I like the larger screen. But I have absolutely nothing against HTC phones, in fact I was choosing between three HTC phones and this Samsung one. I quite like HTC, in fact. I suppose my next phone will be one of theirs. But don't rule out other brands.

Different phones cater to different tastes. Depends on what you want from them. I'd personally suggest one of the phones that has an external keyboard. It's just so much better than the onscreen one.

I've never owned a smart phone chances are I never will(I'm accident prone), but I do like the look of the Samsung Galaxy Note I think it's a smaller version of Galaxy SII

Samsung Galaxy Ace is very good, I've been using mine for a couple of months now & no complaints. It also seems to be pretty popular.

Also, it's well worth getting to know your system, as battery life will be a lot worse unless you switch on wifi etc only when you need it. (Turn down screen brightness as well, the majority of the time it's just a waste of power)

Well i have the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and i would recommend that phone to anyone, while it does still use Gingerbread (android operating system) it's getting updated to Ice Cream Sandwhich in the next few days/weeks. It's quite big but it's so thin it fits in your pocket really easy, image below;
