As someone who has never played a ValvE(?) game at all, I can only say: I probably wouldn't either.
you got the caps backwards, VALVe.

OT- I personally loved the game, the gunfights are pretty basic, but nothing special. What really kept me into the game was the enviroments and story. I haven't played a game sense that has captured the magic that the aging Source Engine was able to show way back then.
Then again, anyone that says story is irrelevant will not, cannot, appreciate HL2.

Truthfully, i didnt get it (the orange box) until the begining of 2009, but i still dont think it was too great a game. A lack of multiplayer wasnt much of n issue (team fortress 2 was there), but the game didnt really seem good until the antlion nests and enhanced gravity gun. The graphics and story are great, but those are irrelivent. Truthfully, i thought it was n average shooter.

Does anyone else have this opinion?

Before anyone asks, i thought portal was good but nway too short.
Obviously, characterization, voice acting, strong AI, innovation, atmosphere, level design, sound design and set pieces bear little weight in your appreciation of games.

its whats under its hood. physics. first of its kind, common place now. its like looking at the wright brothers' plane and saying "whats so special?" or looking at the world's first nuke and asking why its so important.
I havent played fps much until may of 2007, so i dont no much about advanced physics in the game (or lack thereof in others), but other than that, i dont really c 2 much of other games ripping it off
where do you think rag doll physics came from? they dont rip off HL2 because its all WWII games now.
Er... rag dolls aren't from HL2. I quite remember rag doll physics in the very first Hitman.
then my sources are faulty and someone in my sources pool is going to get a kick in the nuts. excuse me.
Haha thats pretty funny cause the engine is called Source....and you.....Nevermind.

It's your opinion, just like this is mine

Gameplay wise I kind of agree with you its kind of average but still very fun
Its the story, atmosphere, graphics and physics that are the hallmarks

But I still prefer games like Call of duty 4, crysis and rainbow six vegas for gameplay and action

It is a 7.5 out of 10. This is not bad, it is only .5 below my "Spend 60 dollars on it threshold"

Wrong; it is Valve, they are not exempt from basic grammar cause they made a decent shooter and popularized that annoying "Gameplay integrated cutscenes" malarkey.

Just curious, did anybody else get physically sick from playing Half Life 2? I couldn't get past the first few levels because I constantly felt nauseous and eventually had to stop. I suspected it was the predominance of the colour brown, but I never found out. Shame, I was enjoying it up til then.

Yeah ive heard this is a problem with several gamers, myself included and then i played it again later and i found the problem had disappeared.....it was strange.

so, how exactly are story and graphics regardless? i think that's what makes a good game (aside from atmosphere)

Good for you? I mean, congratulations, but is making a thread just to tell us you didn't like a game really worth it?

On the Escapist, you, as I understand it, have two options:
Post your opinion in a full review in the review section.
Find a thread about a Half-Life 2 (there are bound to be hundreds) and post your opinion there.

If you base it SOLELY as a shooter, that's kind of true. But, it's not just trying to be your average shooter. Story is very relevant. You're picking the wrong game to play if you want really good shooting mechanics and little else.

I remember reading it had something to do with the Field of View HL2 uses. I'm not sure, but I think you can adjust it in the settings. If not, I know there's a console command to change the FOV you could look up (although you're kind of screwed if you have it on the 360).

Huh, thanks for the heads-up, I'll look into it and maybe give the game another try.
And, yeah, it was on the PC. I still haven't wrapped my head around the idea of shooters on a console, but that's a whole 'nother barrel of worms.

I liked Half Life 2. Yes as far as gameplay goes its nothing special. You point gun and pull trigger. Gun goes boom and peoples fall down. However the physics were amazing except the seesaw puzzle got old. The story is wonderful and the atmosphere is amazing. I would'nt say it is a phenomenal game but it isnt average by any means.
btw my computer effed up coming into this thread too.
Your wrong! Half-Life 2 is an amazing game! Halo is average!
Buddy. It's called an OPINON! Just becuase they don't agree with you does not mean that there wrong. That just means your an ass.

Half-Life 2 is a fun game for certain people. I enjoyed but my brother was a bit diffrent. He loved the Driving parts but when it came to running around and solving puzzles it was a diffrent story.
