Its Gamers like you that make me sick of the gaming community. I play games expecting a good story to come with good Gameplay. Story is absolutely essential to the making of a great game. ABSOLUTELY ESENTIAL. If you happy to go through playing bland adventures and tires plots all your life then go and sit and gawk over the Conduit and Doom.
Then you must hate gaming. There simply aren't enough games with good stories. The HL2 plot and dialogue is comparable only to a B-movie.
Mass Effect. Call of Juarez. Knights of The Old Republic. Silent Hill. Grand Theft Auto. Oblivion. Fallout. Portal. Metal Gear Solid. Legend Of Zelda. Farenheight. Future Perfect. Halo. XIII. Far Cry. Paper Mario. Condemned. Monkey Island. inFamous. Thief. Prince Of Persia. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Assasins Creed. Bioshock. Phychonauts...

I could Continue... So I will

Arkham Asylum. Dues Ex. Diablo. Final Fantasy. Grim Fandango. Nerwinter Nights. Max Payne. Baldurs gate. Might and Magic. Resistance. Cursed Mountain. The World Ends With You. Okami. No More Heroes. Killer 7. Call Of Duty 4. Freedom Force. Legacy Of Kain. Fire Emblem.

Phew. I ran out of Breath... Okay Ive got my second wind.

Kameo. Republic Comando. Morrowind. Pokemon. Shenmue. Myst. Fable. FEAR. Devil May Cry. Hitman. Golden Sun. Chrono Triger. Eternal Sonata. Metroid Prime. The Darkness. Phantom Dust. Jade Empire. Beyond Good and Evil.

I think that'll cover it for now.
All B-movie plots.
The sci-fi games are no Heinlein. The fantasy games no Gaiman.

And Diablo?? Really.
How many B-movies have you seen?

...What? Why, really, why are those irrelevant? I can't think of a single reason. Especially the story, since the story and general atmosphere is what made HL2 stand out. Why on earth wouldn't that matter?

Apparently that was the wrong way of saying it's not as important. Story and graphics are nice, but gameplay is much more important in my opinion. For graphics, I look out a window. For a story, I read a book or watch a movie.

Really though, a secret resistance fighting against a fascist dictatorship? Hasn't that plot been used in like 50 other movies/books? For example: 1984. Although, maybe putting plots similar to those in books in games is a good idea...

Personally the game is better when you play Half-Life 1 first.

Not that you miss much, it's just more fun that way and you understand what happens before HL2 and why everything is the way it is.

But, if you didn't mind the lack of multiplayer(as HL2 only has Deathmatch) and the story was fine and graphics was fine. What was wrong with the gameplay?

I mean, the gameplay is really quite good fun IMHO. The weapons are varied and fun and tbh feel very good compared to a lot of the games. For example the submachine gun feels light and quick and the rocket launcher feels heavy and packs are really nice punch.

The maps are all relatively varied, theres a few puzzles, some really good set peices.

But it all boils down to opinion. Some people love Halo, some people hate it(like me), some people like Bioshock, some people hate it(like my Fiancé)... its all about tastes :)

For me, a good game is where all those things come together and work as 1 well-oiled machine, gameplay, story, graphics, everything. If one part fails, the machine falls apart. And I must say that the gameplay was pretty solid. Not anything special that's true, but solid, especially for it's time. It wasn't the driving motor of the game, but it also wasn't a faulty gear that made the machine break down. For example, the guns felt solid and pretty real (the SMG and pistol felt and sounded like light, small weapons, while the pulse rifle and rocket launcher felt and sounded like heavy, military guns) and the AI was pretty darned good for it's time. The level design was also pretty spot on, and only upped the quality of the fire fights.

The story is especially good because it's told in so much detail with well-rounded characters. The reason I réally loved the game though, was it's atmosphere. You start out as the hunted, and you slowly turn into the hunter. Lots of small details, and the overal graphics, made it one of my most immersive games I ever played. The skyline of City 17 against the sunset, a broadcast in the distance calling for your surrender, the deserted little camps along the road, the silence only broken by crickets, feeling the breath of Civil Protection in your neck. The feeling of desolation, being hunted down, it was put forward so incredibly well. The parts where the rolls were finally turned (getting the gun on your boat, invading Nova Prospekt) were pure adrenaline rushes.
Gods I love that game...

PS: I just noticed that your grammar and overall sentence structure improved dramatically with that post, compared to your previous one's. I smell a conspiracy!

The story was good, the whole linear thing is not for me but what are you going to do . The whole enhanced gravity gun was cool and then they took it away :(

While I agree you should check literature if you want great stories instead of gaming, there really is some stuff out there that is not B-Movie level. Not much, but there is - Silent Hill, Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia and Metal Gear Solid come to my mind. But those are only the ones I played, I heard Planescape Torment and Deus Ex have great stories on the level of good books, too.

But really, you can't just label anything that is not on the level of Ghoete as "B-Stuff". You can compare anything to the greatest contributions to mankind, but that's not good idea - you will miss out on a lot of great stuff that you might even think is better than what most people agree is the best.

It was the first game to introduce pacing really. It is at least far better than halo. In addition I really dont think this was worth making an entire thread about, what is this, twitter? "My feet are mildly cold!" "I just ate a sandwich!" The only reason for you to make this post is so you can feel like an eccentric by declaring a fairly popular game to be bad. But you also then gone on to renounce that statement and made it less flame friendly. X-TREEEME.

No offence of coarse it is just that this is the sort of thing people on this site tend to do to seem to be thinking outside the box, but it happens so often that now somebody actually liking halo would be really far out.

PS: I don't like halo.

Yes, you're so special for thinking it's average. Your opinion matters that much.

I liked it though.
Yea this is pretty much what I thought. You special, special boy, how awesome you are for this outstanding and very unique opinion. Half Life 2 was fucking awesome, now and then. Look up every review, and the VAST majority of people who played it who loved it. And the story is very relevant. Learn to not troll so much.

Dozens ranging from old black&white monster films to modern B-grade action.

The comparison is fair:
1 less than stellar (voice) acting, usually mediocre to awful? check
2 cheese and camp? check
3 dumb or convoluted plot? check

Sure a game like KOTOR may actually have a better story than the blockbuster Star Wars prequels, but then a blockbuster is sometimes just a huge budget to make a shit film.
KOTOR is still camp, with below average acting.

Note that it is not wrong to like B-movies. If nobody liked them B wouldn't exist. Many people enjoy the cheese and camp.

I liked it but we really should have gotten a refurbished version for consoles, and today it hasn't aged to well as it's only FPS trick was physic based puzzles. Story and characters was good though, can't fault it for that.

(Blasts you with holy water from a super soaker)

Sorry, but as a Half life series fanboy, I can't comment constructively.

I have my reasons for loving it so much-PM me if you want the full and valid explanation.

But seriously, in parrallel with your statement, I got it early this year too, and I do not believe it is dated or average compared to shooters of its day or my day. This was before I became a fanboy that I decided this.

Lol there seems to be no way for me to comment without my fanboy-ism creeping in. Sigh.

WOOO

I even proof-read some of his work.

I thought HL2 was freaking awesome, but that's because it had lots of things I was looking for. I like a good story, and I like the gameplay. If you thought there was too much story and not enough gameplay, there's always Painkiller (which is also freaking awesome).

It's fine to enjoy bad entertainment, it's something else to claim something bad is good.
You seriously believe the stories and acting in those games you listed, is GOOD compared to a good movie or book?

Everybody studies Drama on the internet. Try a real argument.

Blasphemy!

But seriously, though, I liked it as a shooter but I was never able to finish it completely.
