Half life was excellent in terms of level design story and game-play when it first came out now anyone joining in will see average gameplay because every first person shooter since half life has copied parts of it.

I thought it was a great game. The only reason I stopped playing it was because of those "LOADING" parts every 5 minutes that lasted for like half an hour... It's like I'd just start getting into the flow of things and then "LOADING" comes out of nowhere and it's just like "ugh, fuck this". The actual game play is excellent though.
If you are playin on pc this happened to me as well i got a better pc and those loading parts went from half an hour to 10 seconds.

Story was good (though it gets much better in the episodes), the graphics were great for the time. Pretty much standard shooter from there, though I must say is was well balanced and very playable. Good level design and weapons.

The graphics and story are great, but those are irrelivent. Truthfully
Its Gamers like you that make me sick of the gaming community. I play games expecting a good story to come with good Gameplay. Story is absolutely essential to the making of a great game. ABSOLUTELY ESENTIAL. If you happy to go through playing bland adventures and tires plots all your life then go and sit and gawk over the Conduit and Doom.
Then you must hate gaming. There simply aren't enough games with good stories. The HL2 plot and dialogue is comparable only to a B-movie.
Mass Effect. Call of Juarez. Knights of The Old Republic. Silent Hill. Grand Theft Auto. Oblivion. Fallout. Portal. Metal Gear Solid. Legend Of Zelda. Farenheight. Future Perfect. Halo. XIII. Far Cry. Paper Mario. Condemned. Monkey Island. inFamous. Thief. Prince Of Persia. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Assasins Creed. Bioshock. Phychonauts...

I could Continue... So I will

Arkham Asylum. Dues Ex. Diablo. Final Fantasy. Grim Fandango. Nerwinter Nights. Max Payne. Baldurs gate. Might and Magic. Resistance. Cursed Mountain. The World Ends With You. Okami. No More Heroes. Killer 7. Call Of Duty 4. Freedom Force. Legacy Of Kain. Fire Emblem.

Phew. I ran out of Breath... Okay Ive got my second wind.

Kameo. Republic Comando. Morrowind. Pokemon. Shenmue. Myst. Fable. FEAR. Devil May Cry. Hitman. Golden Sun. Chrono Triger. Eternal Sonata. Metroid Prime. The Darkness. Phantom Dust. Jade Empire. Beyond Good and Evil.

I think that'll cover it for now.
All B-movie plots.
The sci-fi games are no Heinlein. The fantasy games no Gaiman.

And Diablo?? Really.
How many B-movies have you seen?
Dozens ranging from old black&white monster films to modern B-grade action.

The comparison is fair:
1 less than stellar (voice) acting, usually mediocre to awful? check
2 cheese and camp? check
3 dumb or convoluted plot? check

Sure a game like KOTOR may actually have a better story than the blockbuster Star Wars prequels, but then a blockbuster is sometimes just a huge budget to make a shit film.
KOTOR is still camp, with below average acting.

Note that it is not wrong to like B-movies. If nobody liked them B wouldn't exist. Many people enjoy the cheese and camp.
Have we Played COmpleately Different games or what?
And wtf is up with your deffinition of Camp?
And do you know anything about acting?
(And before you ask. Id Like to say I do, being that I study Drama at Degree Level)
It's fine to enjoy bad entertainment, it's something else to claim something bad is good.
You seriously believe the stories and acting in those games you listed, is GOOD compared to a good movie or book?

Everybody studies Drama on the internet. Try a real argument.
Hence the reason Games to movies NEVER work. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I DO NOT CARE about stories in games either, hell, I even care about graphics more than story. Vagrant Story is one of my favorite games of all time. I played that game 10 years ago and I can remember the weapons, special moves, enemies, bosses, areas and environments, the music, etc. But for the life of me I can't freaking remember what the god damn story was about; I never cared to begin with; the game was a blast, and that was way more than good enough for me. Video games are not the best place to get good drama.

Acctually. Yes. Yes I do. Voice actings probably one of the most difficult skills in acting. If not THE hardest. So I pay respect to the superbed acting in many of the games ive listed.

And acctually Id rather play Silent Hill 2 to experience the rich and textured Plot in an interactive and imersive enviroment rather than watch any Hitchcock movie.

As someone who has never played a ValvE(?) game at all, I can only say: I probably wouldn't either.
Not even Left 4 Dead?
Left 4 Dead became too repitive too fast. First time playing the campains and about 3 days worth of online stuff. Never played it since.
Ya, playing as infected was funner than survivers. I don't know why they didn't have an infected only offline option. Other than that the game was good but got repetitive.

Ya, played it again. Still don't care for it, but I can see why people like it. I just have a different taste in video games.

OT:

Lots of people don't like Half Life 2. Nothing crazy there.

I love it, but that doesn't mean I don't see its many flaws.

Also, you'll find most people who play Half Life of Half Life 2 now are disappointed. At the time it was revolutionary but now, every game derives from it, that's why you don't like it, you've played it so many times in games that have copied it.

I played Half Life when it came out in 2004 - and found it quite lacking, Besides Half Life 2 Deathmatch, which is too terrible to even speak of, I, writing myself, and really being a fan of good stories in games, fail too see why everyone holds the Hl2 Story that higly - because it really wasn't that good. It wasn't completely terrible, but italso wasn't great, in fact not even good. It was your simple "save the world from alience together with your love interest and a ragtag human resistance", which lost all originality around nineteen seconds after the invention of the science-fiction genre.

Give the game credit for the graphics - fine by me. Give it credit for toying around with the physics - that was actually fun, while it lasted (15 minutes or so). But other than that, Half Life 2 was an average fps, no more, no less.

I've always thought Half-Life 2 was overrated.

The story was not adequately explained, it was only ever "hinted" at what happened prior to your arrival and that does not satisfy me. I do not play a game to make the story up in my own head. Its the narrative's job to tell it to me.
Where was the motivation for Gordon? He's dumped there, against his will, and just left to get on with it. Why am I helping these people? I have no reason to other than "the combine aren't very nice" ....oh, right. I would have thought that a holder of a PhD in theoretical physics would stop and say "hang on, what the fuck is going on here?" but no, nothing - doesn't say a word.

The weapons were something of a bugbear for me. Remember in the first HL all those experimental weapons you came across and nicked? Alien weapons too? remember that? Where the hell did they go? the weapons in HL2 are exactly the same as the first one MINUS the exciting extraordinary ones. Huh. Great.
I liked the gravity gun, yes, but it just kept coming across as more of a gimmicky thing than anything else, a bit like the multitude of "physics puzzles" in the game. There is only so many times I want to stack bricks on one end of a see-saw so I can climb up the other end. Your physics/gravity model is good. I get it.

The vehicle sections took up a bit too much of a game that was pretty short to begin with. I played through the game in the afternoon I bought it.

It was a pretty solid shooter, but it didn't live up to the expectations for me and I certainly don't understand why its always in the top 5 of these "top 100" games in review magazines.

Name some. It doesn't seem to do anything gameplay wise that other games don't, and that's including older games, like Doom.
And why is it that out of like 50 threads I necro'd this is the one people pay attention to? Do you people really care about everyone else's opinion so much that you have to force your own on them?

You know what, you're right. I'm so sorry I replied to your thread with my opinion.
I'm not trying to force what I think on you, I'm just telling you what I think.
I didn't tell you you were wrong once. You know why that is? It's because I don't think you're wrong, I was just trying to contribute what I thought. I know better than to do that from now on.

It wasn't so much you as the other people. I necro'd about 50 threads in a short amount of time as a joke and for some reason this is pretty much the only one that people paid attention to.
To go back to what I was saying, there have been some games that have copied HL2's gravity gun, such as Bioshock, but overall I don't see a huge amount of difference between it and other games.
And yes, I'm aware this reply is 3 weeks late. I've been away for a while to see if I could.
