I dislike (not hate) the fantasy story setting. Is skyrim for me?

I've never been a massive fan of the fantasy story setting in any medium. Sat through Lord of the rings barely and have never really hole heartedly tried a tradional fantasy game. I like rpgs though more jrpgs, but loved fallout 3 onwards. Story is a massive part of the game for me and ive seen how much fun people are having with skyrim and I feel i'm missing out. Don't want to invest the time and money though if it turns out everyone uses the words ye and speaks about the lost druid girl blah blah blah. Help me out escapist pleaseeee.

Probably not.

Skyrim is pretty standard fantasy. It's combat is nothing memorable, and it's main story while nice is short.

It's a fun game if you like dragons and magic and exploring a very pretty world.

Skyrim is awasome but then I enjoy fantasy. In terms of gameplay its more similar to fallout than Morrowind I think. The plot is fairly stereotypical kill the bad guys save the world in a fantasy setting, but everybody speaks more or less plain English (accept the crazy people, but their crazy). My advice would be borrow or rent a copy and try it out, if you don't like it after an hour chances are you wont like it at all. But I definitely dont think you should miss out on such an amazing game just because you aren't raving about fantasy.

Depends which FF story setting you dislike but it seems it more of the traditional settings going by your comments on LotR in which case I wouldnt recommend Skyrim as it is pretty much high fantasy setting but you know you could always rent a copy and see if it is for you or even watch a few videos on you tube.

Hmmm I love exploring whether its for finding intresting charecters or unique locations i'm not sure...

I must say though I really like the look of the leveling system.

I thought I hated sci fi then i played mass effect which proved me wrong. Any other problems or things I might like never been so on the fence about a game.

I would give it a try. If you enjoyed the exploration part of Fallout 3, I think Skyrim is actually better... The leveling system is pretty good too.
I am not a great fan of the fantasy world of Elder Scrolls (pretty generic to me, plus it doesn't have the charm of Fallout), but even then I enjoyed a lot of the game...

It's basically Fallout 3 in Middle Earth, but with better gameplay and mechanics. I can't describe it any more succinctly than that.

If the Fallout 3 aspect is tempting enough to outweigh your ambivalence toward the setting then you'll probably enjoy it.

Honestly I found the combat horrid, but I loved exploring the huge world. There isn't much of a compelling story in it, the fun is finding all the little quests to adventure on. You said you like exploring and dislike fantasy so I don't know how much fun you would have exploring a fantasy world and fighting dragons. I'd say borrow/rent it or at least look up some youtube gameplay videos first.

My workmate is the same, he doesn't like fantasy. He tried a "sniff" copy of skyrim to try it out and before long went and bought it. He thinks it's a great game... It is.

Well... not everyone uses swords.

Some people SHOUT.

Draugr seem to be the most common enemy in the game and they're basically the same as zombies. Er, most of them use swords. But some also SHOUT.

Being a sneaky magic-slinging archer is pretty kick-ass, if you ask me. Especially when you can just SHOUT away anyone who dares get too close. The FUS shout is pretty amusing to use, especially when you get the second and third upgrades to it.

Incidentally I didn't think I'd enjoy Skyrim because Oblivion was so bloody boring and vanilla. If you don't like generic fantasy you will hate Oblivion because that's all it is. Skyrim on the other hand has some flavor to it, a more interesting world, and even the parts that are just typical fantasy fare (like the Winterhold College questline) are well-executed enough to be interesting and fun.

Oh, and I don't think I've heard anyone talk about a lost druid girl, so there's that. But there is a little ghost girl in Morthal. Go talk to her. ;)

If you want to give it a try, now's probably the best time, since it's on sale. If you like it, then keep it. If you don't, well, you haven't lost as much money as if you bought it new.

If story is important to you AND you don't like the fantasy genre, then don't bother. The setting is pretty much bog-standard fantasy, and even in that, the story is weak. It's not a bad game, but its story isn't one of its strengths.

I'll tell you what I told my friend who asked me the same thing: Play Fallout instead.

The setting is better, the lore is better, the characters are an infinite times more engaging, the skill system is is better than Skyrim's bullshit, and no matter what anyone says, Skyrim has WAY more boring atmosphere that even Fallout 1 and 2.

same with me....its just personal taste, because give me somthing set in a gritty space ship Im sold

but start talking about elves and I fall to sleep (though I did love Dragona ge orgins)

I would say "probably not", I loved dragon age but that was because of the story and charachters, somthing lacking in Syrim..sure its fun for a bit but I got sick of it quickly

I am interested in kingdoms of alumur, it seems to look nicer

No. Its about as standard a fantasy as you can get.

Maybe try renting it? decide for yourself

Dude. People don't play skyrim for the story or the combat, they play it for the sandbox factor and exploration. Or in the PC gamer's case, the sandbox and the modability.

if you're a console gamer, rent it. if you're a pc gamer, wait for the mods to come out.
