People hate Halo because it became cool to hate Halo. That' most of it.

Legitimate reasons would be that in 2 and 3, they reused the same story structure, and the multiplayer being filled with young kids screaming, annoying jocks/pricks/etc, and other assorted complaints but it tends to come down to sheeple being sheeple.
Well, I played Halo recently and in an hour's sitting only came across 2 screaming kids. They seem to have all migrated to MW2 and God help us if the invade Halo: Reach.

One of the kids I met was shouting "I got more kills than you!!!" at the end of Team Slayer. I got 25, he got 14. You can never truly escape them, but they've certainly died down in Halo.

Well sir, I for one like Halo.

It was great, Halo: Combat Evolved was a great game and although Halo 2 was lacking in the series, I thought Halo 3 was a step in the right direction.

Sure when you played it it might have been full of screaming kids shouting at you and calling everyone a "******" but it was great fun for an FPS.

I mean, who doesn't like shooting a tank at vehicles flying over an obstacle course? Custom Games and forge was a new aspect, and one of the greatest things anyone has put into an FPS, you can make your own maps easily and escape the world of screaming children behind and have a fun match with your friends.

Oh, and use the mute button more often people, you can't complain about screaming kids if you can't be arsed to mute them.

Because the single player was meh,but game critics give it near perfect scores everytime. That's one of the arguements that I choose to believe. I like Halo, I've been a fan ever since it came out and I still like to play it today.

I always thought of Halo as a rather fun game. Yeah its single player sucked but they started that tradition around Halo 2, but the multiplayer is one of the best I know. Certianly better than the COD or MW series or whatever it likes to be called now. At least Halo had some diversity in its gametypes and they actually felt different and each were fun in its own way. And the maps are very open and the multiplayer lets you drive around in vehicles and destroy everything in your path including yourself in often hilarious ways. I just dont get why people hate Halo so much. Can anyone clue me in on why?
Let me sum it up with this.
The mentality of the internet is "If its popular, it sucks."
Why? Because everyone knows that the obscure works are the most original and the best and that sequels or popularity means it would be main stream. Because it's popular and has a large fan base, it's most definitely trying to appeal to the sheep and not the all wise fans.

I love it, the Multiplayer is addictive, and Theater blew me away. It's just perfectly balanced, and really fun.

Because it's cool to hate Halo. Because it brought non-gamers into gaming. Because your mileage may vary. Because if Halo was really good it might make Half Life 2 seem worse and fanboys couldn't have that. Because it was based on multiplayer more than single player.

Choose one.

I don't hate it, but I'm not really a fan of the franchise. What annoys me about Halo is that it's just a mediocre shooter, but it somehow managed to be a massive success.

Have you ever even played Modern Warfare 2? It doesn't sound like it at all. It might be imbalanced at the killstreaks are overpowered, but it's probably the most diverse and interesting multiplayer FPS on the market.
I believe that title goes to Team Fortress 2. Hell, even Bad Company 2 is more interesting and diverse than MW2.

OT: Halo's pretty decent yeah, I don't see the hate towards it. Personally, I don't get why it's so acclaimed, but it's one of the best games to play with 3 other mates around a TV.

I find that Halo just isn't that mindbogglingly amazing. I've found more immersion in the original Quake games, and Halo isn't that far off Quake 2 in some aspects. The weapons are weird and toy-like. Fun to play at a party, I don't see much other attraction for it.

People hate halo because it isn't a very good game, a game cannot be carried on its multiplayer alone, and frankly Halo's multiplayer is pretty crap anyway.
Eh. Does MW2 have a zombie-survival mode? How about a version of rugby where everyone has superpowered sledgehammers? Or ATV racing with rocketlaunchers? Snipers-only? Melee-only? Keep-away? King of the Hill? VIP? MW2 doesn't even have vehicles. I have to side with Halo on this one.

I'm not hugely fond of either of them, but the only one I could really get into multiplayer-wise was Halo. Because in Halo, if you do everything right and get the rhythm of the combat down, you're pretty much guaranteed to be rewarded for it. In Modern Warfare, the mechanics feel almost random and whimsical. I've never been spawn-killed in Halo, nor have I ever not known how or why I died.

Halo is uninteresting and shouldn't have won any game of the year awards. but it's alright for fanboys I guess. I feel sorry for all the Halo 2 players who got kicked off the servers this past week though :( feelings go out to you guys

It´s not that i hate it, the thing is a i don't usually play multiplayer of anything and the single player campaign bored the hell out of me, so much that i stopped playing it for like 6 months before finishing it.

So bottom line: it bores me.

Also some people say that a game that has a single player campaign should be able to stand alone as a game because in any multiplayer, the people that plays it are the ones that make it fun, not the developers themselves. If you ask me that is a half truth.

Because it set a horrible standard for copycats, thus turning nearly the entire genre into a samey, homogenous bog.
It sucked the creativity out of FPS, and left us with a swarm of identical ripoffs, only they were even worse than the original.

People don't hate Halo for itself as a game, they hate it because of what it did to the industry.
Perfectly said. Halo as a game is fun to play from time to time, but I hate the series for what its done to the FPS genre.

For me, it is boring. But I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate it. The games all look nice, more or less (and for their time, I don't think Halo 1 will age well), but looks don't make a game. Halo 2 and 3 are the exact same game stylistically and in their mechanics, the only thing different are the levels. Not necessarily a bad thing if you like the games, but it is a weakness for me because I didn't much care for it.

And the story line, my goodness! When people praise it I can't help but shake my head. I'm sorry, but it is as generic as it comes, there is nothing special about it, it has been done a million and one times. Aliens, big scary weapons, super space marine, humans win. It is just a tacky, typical, sci-fi plot line. Honestly, if you can eat this up you need to read more books, and read older literature, so you can see where all this stuff came from. Trust me, I am an English Literature student with Trent University, I've done so much reading and studying in these past few years that I know a rehash of an old story when I see one.

But, besides the plot being a horrible rehash, there is really no reason to HATE Halo. It's not my cup of tea but that doesn't mean that the game itself is terrible...

But then you get the fanbase... Holy shit...

Don't get me wrong, some of you are cool, but when I hear younger people talking about Halo 1 like it's so old and so classic I just... I can't help it, I get a little pissed off... I mean, I don't consider the N64 classic yet, it's not old enough! Sheesh... Plus, playing online and listening to all that preteen crying and complaining is just grating... I know you can mute, but you're just going to keep running into more and have to keep muting over and over again... You can never silence them all!

Basically, if you love Halo, that's fine, if it's all you play that's cool (you're really depriving yourself of some really good stuff, but it's your call), but don't treat it like the cat's pajamas... It didn't really define anything, it didn't create anything, it's really not that special unless you have some sort of personal connection to it... It's just another FPS.

I suppose, in short, no I don't hate Halo, but I don't think everyone should be eating it's shit and calling it gold.

Dude, you need to give better reasons than that. You basically just said 'it's crap because it's crap'.

I played Halo's multi for a while and thought it was fun and balanced.

In COD you have numerous issues like overpowered perks and guns, broken spawn system, killstreaks punishing good players for thier shit team-mates, and the complete randomness of many deaths.

Halo feels a bit too slow for my personal taste, but it is certainly far more balanced and well designed than the game you mentioned. In a one on one, the better player always wins.

I don't bother hating it, I just found it to be a mediocre experience. If Haze had sold 10 million copies and people told me it set the standard for console FPS I'd feel about the same way.

I dont think anyone truly hates Halo, They just hate it for its popularity. Halo is the legendary first person shooter because Halo Combat Evolved was the game that set the standerd for all console shooters.
Swing and a miss. As far as setting the standard for console shooters the award goes to .... Goldeneye!

But yes it did improve on the formula.
And now there is a pretty standard formula.

I actually can't stand Halo, but not because it's popular or what not.
I can't stand it for it's single player, its story, I don't like the weapons, etc.
Plus I don't play many games online, especially over XBL so there's no reason for me to own it or play it.
That said I don't own COD either, though I think its a better game and have enjoyed it splitscreen at a friend's house on more than one occasion. I can't say the same for Halo.

I guess I prefer FPS on PC mostly. As far as these console versions go, they didn't really add anything all that innovative that Unreal Tournament didn't have, so I have trouble seeing them as being that big a deal.

That's just my opinion anyway, but I do see why some people like Halo. The gameplay is not bad and its got a big online community.
But I also don't have a hard time seeing why people hate it, because in all honesty I find the game to be pretty average.
*sigh*
Why yes Goldeneye was a great game and made a lot of people start to like first person shooters but it still had its flaws.(Although I am still waiting for the remake. They have remade almost everything but Goldeneye).
Anyway Halo CE defined future FPS's by making you to be able to hold only two guns at a time(remember those games where you could fit an entire arsenal in your pocket), Made throughing grenades its own button(before this you selected a grenade by scrolling down your list of weapons untill you reached grenades).
Halo CE also had an amazing story line(the other stories were not so good).
