I will NOT play a game on its easiest setting for a continued amount of time. I know a couple of people who enjoy the invincible feeling of being able to run through the levels being shot, beat, sliced, whatever, without taking a decent amount of damage. I for one, cannot tolerate such madness. What do you guys think? Am I crazy for not being able to deal with the fact that I just got hit with about 200 rounds/arrows/knives/punches and am still kicking? Or am I justified for wanting a bit of challenge?

My first play is always on normal. Then the most difficult if there's an achievement for it. Then I'll go back on easy to do all the collection achievements.

Yes, achievements dictate how I play games.

I do it for the catharsis. Especially if I just died for the 152nd time on the hardest setting.

I usually start games on the hardest possible setting. If I find myself getting untolerably cockblocked by something that's not poor design, then I consider setting the difficulty down.

I'd prefer a new game to be as challenging an experience as possible, makes it more memorable. Roflcoptering through a story doesn't really give me much satisfaction.

MY GOD.

I REFUSE TO BUDGE FROM "EASIER".

I find games these days (wow, did I just say "these days"? Damn I feel old now...) stupidly easy so I have to play on the top difficulty or it doesn't feel rewarding when I compete something. Demon's Souls is about the only exception to that rule.

Depends on the game, really.

If it's a game I'm playing for the sake of story, then I usually play it on easy for the first round. If it has any kind of New Game+ or replay value I up it to normal. And if it's a game that really really really catches me and won't let go, I'll play it again on hard.

I tend to stick to the action/adventure/rpg genres, and there's very few among them that come even close to tempting me to replay after getting the ending at least once. Honestly, games are my relax mode, I have a full day full of difficulties and challenges, and I come back to my consoles for a little escapism and relaxation. So easy mode it is because I'm looking for a light enough challenge to make the game entertaining but not actually give me a hard time.

That said, there are some games that easy mode is just blech on. The Dragon Age games I had to up to normal because easy was TOO easy. >.>

I always play on normal mode. At least, until I keep failing a particular level.

Seriously, fuck the High Dragon in Dragon Age 2.

Who cares, man? Just play the game on the level you enjoy.

The few who I know who play games on their easy setting do so because they are aiming to be immersed in the World and soak up the story. They aren't playing for the challenge. Or maybe they are playing for the challenge, they just a crummy at video games and easy is challenging.

I always play it on medium the first time. If I like it I play through it on hard and so on.
I just don't get any satisfaction if the game is to easy.

I'll do my first run through on normal unless it's a type of game where I feel confident at then I'll play it on the hardest setting so it lasts longer.

I like to play on normal for a first playthrough and then work my way up, especially if beating one difficulty unlocks a harder difficulty.

When I was a kid, I did things on easy. As I grew older, I decided that normal was the way to go for veteran players.

I always start on normal or higher when playing a game, and almost never go through on the easiest setting. Though I will admit to going through levels on the easiest setting from time to time, especially if it's a level that has given me extreme difficulty in beating.

Also, I do not replay adventure styled games (God of War, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc.) if they do not have a New Game+. I don't want to go through the first level again, just as weak and powerless as the first time through. I want to go back through and totally curb stomp the little fuckers who gave me so much trouble the first time.

I start on 'normal' usually. Then it depends on how the game plays, if it's far too easy on normal, I'll up the difficulty setting.
Games that would probably scare the wee out of me - I tend to play on 'easy'. I'm such a wuss when it comes to 'horror' games. lol

Amen to that, it adds a certain level of infinite replayability for me. I can plop down and in the span of 2 or 3 hours blow through the whole game on new game plus. I get the catharsis of annihilating everything in front of me and I get to experience the story just shy of the play time of the first Godfather movie.

OT: Like most people have said, on my first run I'll play a game on normal mode so I can experience the story to it's fullest and get my self well-versed enough in the combat mechanics that when I move onto harder settings it's not as brutal a learning curve. So basically the first run is for pleasure, the following runs are for epeen.

normal is my difficulty of choice by default. If its a game I heard a lot about and how great it is and I can't seem to get into it on Normal I will switch to Easy to see if its just that I suck at it or is it just not my cup of tea. But normal/3 options or normal-hard/4 options I think is the most reasonable option to get a good feel of the game and get a good enough challenge without it being crippling.
