I have a problem, you could say.I hear all this talk of the big evil corporations being big and evil and AAA is a big evil awful thing and I feel conflicted

Conflicted particually after Jims peice featuring Dead space 3, I'm the same in that I love dead space but this micro transaction BS is a step too far...oh I'll probably still get it but I'll feel kind of bad, but that said it doesnt have to be a game killer in terms of the game (ethically though)

people are predeicting and even calling for another crash if not of the AAA model then of EA,EA crashing actually wouldnt bother me at this point....but anyway

I feel kind of frustrated, when I play games I play for a certain expereince, the big worlds, cinematic storys, and (in a perfect world) fun gameplay, do all games tick thesse boxes? no of coarse not, but I sure as hell did not spend as much as I did the other day on a new computer so I could play "retro graphics indie wankfest"

so whats my point? I dont know, I think I forgot my point

actually I think my point is the frustration felt when somthing I like (I guess you could say somthing kind of important to me) is met with such hate and negativity,

its not that I understand, I do....but whats the answer? does "voting with your wallet"? make any difference? It didnt for Diablo, it didn;t for ME3 and I doubt it will with DS3 I dont know what the answer is...except for complaining...I think we should complain more not to ourselfs on forums but to the companys themselves...

I get a little mad when people label people like myself as idiots...hey fine, dont get the fucking game if it makes you feel good, but its my money and I'll do what I damn well please with it, I'm not an idiot, my principles are just different...and SURE "retro graphics indie wankfest" is great for you but its not my thing

The only correct solution is to just enjoy the games you enjoy and don't give a fuck what other people think. Works for me.

Well 'voting with my wallet' worked for me, I would have bought both ME3 and Diablo 3 if it weren't for the DLC and DRM schemes respectively.

And when the "The Ending SUCKS" threads (and Zeel) showed up along with tales of error 37 I felt vindicated. The money from those two 'votes' later went to Xcom and Dishonored, games that I may not have bought originally due to their end of year release.

If you want to give money to companies who treat you like a wallet on legs (or whatever you keep your money in) then be my guest, just don't expect me to join in or not look askance at you.

In short, we both have different ideas as to what makes a game fun and what direction the games industry should go.

GET OVER IT.

So much pointless rage. It feeds me!

I buy what's going to give me some entertainment. I don't give a fuck who else likes it, as long as I do. I don't get why people get in such a tizzy.

There was an interesting article written about this a while ago on this site.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/firstperson/9909-Blowing-Away-the-Triple-A

It talks about how people can look down on AAA games and why it's sometimes justified, and why people don't like that point of view.

I've had that opinion for while now; that AAA titles are akin to something of a guilty pleasure. A popcorn blockbuster flick. A McDonalds meal. To me they're fun, but mostly mindless fun, because publishers are too afraid to take risks and develop a niche. Another thing for me is the price point. I enjoy plenty of AAA games but I feel like 60 dollars is far too much for what is often a shallow, cliche experience.

I can see why it seems like a pretty snobbish attitude, but after watching the industry grow for years, I can help but perceive that the place for the most interesting and innovative games has been passed down from AAA titles to independent and lower budget games.

I still like AAA titles from time to time though, and every now and then one will slip by the publisher's radar and be interesting and unique.

I don't think your preference for AAA titles says anything about your intelligence obviously, you just have a different value on quality and what makes you enjoy a product.

You seem to be easily offended/insulted/whatever. What other people think of a game or company shouldn't affect your own judgement of it, especially on the net. Everyone is going to have some kind of opinion that conflicts with yours, that is natural, some are going to be very vocal and blunt about their opinions. If you can't accept others' opinions, then surely you can simply ignore them? Though to be honest, I don't see why you need to get worked up over the words of others, anonymous people in particular.

Personally I would blame the AAAs for the manipulative crap they put into their games for stopping ppl from having fun rather than worrying if i'm been scammed or playing a Skinner box which is increasingly the case with gaming.

If this doesn't bother you than OK it's you money and free time, but alot do and hate it.

And what makes the internet even madder is that they do it with successful IPs that didn't have this crap at the beginning. EA is the worst in this regard both with nickle and dimeing and adding Co-op and MP. I can see how some ppl won't go near a EA game nowadays, whats the point getting into a trilogy when 3rd game is something very different from the original.

Don't worry Vault, not everyone immediately hurls themselves out the nearest window whenever they hear the phrase "Triple A."

It's not for me either Vault, you are not alone.

I do love AAA games, the only company I don't buy from is Ubisoft but they hate PC gamers anyway.

In fact, the only "indie" game I own is Bastion that cost me £1.75 in the Steam sale (and I only got it because people told me how great it was ... and it actually is pretty good).

The thing I find amusing is, especially on this website, a lot of the people asking for a "games crash" weren't around during the first one.

It wasn't exactly a "crash" it was more an Atari flop.

Atari, at that time, dominated the gaming market. They had their fingers in every thing but they weren't doing a fantastic job. It was obvious they were going to flop sooner or later, especially when you consider the massive loss they suffered after ET.

As soon as Atari flopped, Nintendo stepped up to take it's place. It's not as if the "crash" changed much. Gaming didn't suddenly become a thousand times better, technology did that, not Atari failing.

We also had other companies step up, although not as big in name at that time as Atari and Nintendo. Spectrum, Amiga, Atari was still around just not as big as they were and Sony was in the works.

These were all going to come around whether Atari crashed or not.

What people also don't realise is it wasn't an overnight thing or as dramatic as it actually sounds. It took 2 years for the companies involved to go bankrupt (between 1983 and 1985) and by the time they had Nintendo had already released the NES and it was selling quite well. Between 1985 and 1987 the NES became a hit.

Just because certain companies fail doesn't mean the rest won't pick up the slack.

That's why I said another gaming crash will never happen. Companies might fall but there is far too many now for it to slump the way it did in 1985.

Gaming wasn't as big then as it is now. It was only a 3.5 billion dollar market (the crash dropped it to 100 million in case anyone was interested). Now ActiVision alone reports having 6 billion dollar profits over a financial year.

The sheer amount of money involved in the industry today would take years for it to slump in a way that could be considered a "crash". It would involve, literally, millions upon mullions of gamers not buying a single game for the duration. It just won't happen.

Sure, certain companies may fall by the wayside but it will never crash.

Very well put. For what it's worth, I tend to enjoy AAA games more than other games as well, though I hardly ever enjoy multiplayer, even when it comes down to games such as Call of Duty, i prefer single player

Popular games get hated regardless of their quality and there is nothing more popular than AAA games.

Though it's true they need to get a bit more courageous, even if it's somewhat understandable why they play it so safe.
