I can feel empathy, I just don't care. Especially not about humans. Maybe if I know someone I'll feel bad if something really bad happened to them. But otherwise, when the news say that 10'000 has been killed, they might as well have said 2 flies, that's how little I care.

I'm the kind of person who dwells on things long after they're over. Like on my way to school this morning I say a guy with a backpack trudging through the snow. I'm still thinking to myself "did he reach where he was going safely?"

I remember a story a while back, where some guy on a bus in London stood up to some guys who were insulting his girlfriend. He wasn't even getting angry, he stayed calm, but the bastards mobbed him and stabbed him several times with their switchblades, then simply walked off the bus at the next stop. No one made an attempt to stem the bleeding or call an ambulance. He died on the bus surrounded by people who wanted to see the blood. His girlfriend asked one guy who was standing over him to give her his coat so she could cover him up, and the guy just said no. These kind of stories do invoke some pity in me, but it quickly becomes overwhelmed by rage at the people who would do these kinds of things. Christ, I'd like to think in that position I'd at least try to help keep the kid alive, rather than just stand idly by and watch.

Empathy, yes. But pity, no. Those few people that I ever shown pity for in my life (at least people I know personally) have since slipped out of my life. I do not like to feel pity for someone, it is never a desired emotion. And I do my best to avoid it.

I plan on becoming a volunteer, part-time EMT sometime in the near future, which I think will help me empathize with more people (maybe). That is a blurry concept of the job to me now. But I do wish tp help people, and I have always been told I hold some good skills for being an EMT, so I think that's a good start at least.

Heh, I have a friend that usually does in that situation :p

It's amusing. In a good way of course.

I have a mild disorder that dulls any empathy I might feel.

BUT I TRY, DAMMIT!

That said, I desperately try to empathize with anyone who's undergoing any suffering worth mentioning, but I only feel truly "sorry" for people when they've simply not had any luck whatsoever in life.

From the movie Snatch:

*Turkish, Tommy and Mickey stand at the smouldering wreckage of the trailer that Mickey's mum got burned to death inside of*

Turkish: "Oh, geez Mickey. Im sorry."

Mickey: "Did you do it?"

Turkish: "Wha... No!"

Mickey: "Then what are ye sorry for?"

This pretty much sums up my view of feeling sorry about anything at all...

I do not feel pity towards others, I only feel slightly awkward being in the room...

OT: I always feel sorry for that one, stupid, obnoxious, dick who always gets bullied (and generally cries a lot) at my school. Even though I hate the guy.

I hate animal cruelty and who ever causes it to happen should be strung up from a lampost for all to see!!

I mean like the slow loris is possibly one of the cutest animals i have ever seen and it is hunted to near extinction because they use it's eyes for medicine in china i think. Also read something that in the philipines they found a whole bunch of them in rusty cages dead! just makes me feel sad and yet angry at the same time.

here's a video to show you just how damn cute this animal is!!

I feel sad at stuff as much as the next guy, but i easily build up immunities.

When i was 13 i had nightmares about the "help the africans" commercials - Cause they were so sad and cruel.
Also cried when i saw homeless drug addicts.

Now i get pissed off when i see "help the africans" flash commercials everywhere on my browser, newspapers etc - I know its heartless but its an immunity and it feels great to not get affected by it.
As for homeless drug addicts too far in to get saved, they don't exist in my view - I don't even double take.

I believe immunity against certain of these sad things in life can help many.

I hate animal cruelty. I think all humans and animals should be treated equally.
In fact sometimes I feel we don't deserve to have such intelligence. And if we do these cruel acts, are we really that intelligent

In general, for animals. It even goes to movies/ "fake" tv (opposed to the animal rescue shows and what not). I can watch some dude get cut in half w/ a butter knife screaming in pain and be.. meh oh well, but hit a dog and I'm genuinely pissed off.

I'm fairly good at both empathy and pity, and I give both on a regular basis. Congratulations and good wishes, too.

I tend to give them to people far away, though. I can't stand to do it too much in person. Up close, the pain is too intense, and I block it out instinctively.

Oh, yes. Frequently. I'm a bleeding heart. I care pretty deeply about a lot of things, probably way too much if I'm honest with myself.

I have very little empathy, so I dont generally feel sorry for people

But I do what I can to help and support my fellow species
