A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of homeless guys in the subway below the Groenplaats in Antwerp. Right above our heads MusicForLife was going on, a large and media-heavy yearly charity event, with this years edition devoted to African AIDS orphans. I saw a mobs of people just passing the homeless guys by, not even paying attention to them. All preoccupied with getting to the event so they can feel good about themselves and perchance get their face on tv. Blind to the misery right under their noses. I felt ashamed, divided up all my change and handed it out to those homeless.
It was made even worse by knowing that the police was given orders to bar the homeless and beggars from the event grounds. "Go on, crawl back underground, there is charity that needs doing here", so to speak.
Not that organizing a charity for orphans isn't a noble endeavor, but witnessing that whole situation made me feel sad, sorry and disgusted.
