Yeah, petty subject, I know. But there's just something particular about this one that gets under my skin. I haven't played Destiny, and nor am I intending to after this incredibly obnoxious piece of marketing for its upcoming DLC:

Jesus! Could you be any more trying to be Borderlands as written by Joss Whedon's worst aspects as a writer? HEY GUYS WE'RE INCREDIBLY QUIPPY AND FUNNY HEY HERE'S SOME ONE LINERS HA HA ISN'T THAT FUNNY?? AND HERE'S A CLASSIC ROCK TRACK THAT DOESN'T SUIT THE SCIFI SETTING AT ALL BUT WE USE IN MARKETING ANYWAY BECAUSE IT'S RECOGNIZED AND IT MEANS WE'RE ROCKING AND ROLLING AMIRITE ALSO AREN'T WE QUIRKY AND WACKY!!!!?!?!?!?!?

To my understanding the game's tone was nothing like in this trailer. Why is it trying to be all wacky and humorous when Borderlands 2 did all that three years ago with more color, personality, creativity, and frankly, better writing? This looks like offbeat marketing by committee of the highest order: an accounting sheet with all the elements of how to make a "quirky" trailer, and all it manages to come across is incredibly annoying.

Anyway, mini-rant over. Just needed to vent about something I guess. Who else thinks this? What other pieces of video game marketing did you find irritating?

...You really need to calm down if a videogame trailer has you worked up this much...

Anyway, OT:

I'm guessing you don't remember the first Live Action trailer for the game released a year ago. Here it is:

It's pretty much the same thing as the new trailer. It even seems to use the same actors. You could have gotten this out of your system a year ago, heh.
To my understanding the game's tone was nothing like in this trailer. Why is it trying to be all wacky and humorous when Borderlands 2 did all that three years ago with more color, personality, creativity, and frankly, better writing?
What exactly are you trying to say here? Just cause Borderlands 2 is a "funny game", means no other game is allowed to attempt to be humorous? Personally, I found Borderlands "humor" to be eyerolling far more often than genuinely funny, and the writing in general to be painful. So, I can't agree with the notion that Borderland's writing to be "better" (yes, even compared to Destiny), but that's just my opinion.

Onto the subject of tone, that's.. not actually correct. The Taken King has a lot more banter in missions between NPC's at the tower (One of which is voiced by Nathan Fillion) with a lot of new dialogue from your newly voiced Ghost. There's quite a bit of humor and jokes to be found now, even within the new Grimoire cards.

Besides the use of licensed music, I don't really see what the big deal about the commercial is. As far as videogame marketing goes, I think it's pretty clever and even fairly fresh.

Look at it this way, in 1 minute, it shows off the brand new environment, a set of new abilities, a new weapon, a full set of new armor for all the classes, the new enemy type and it even gives the lore reason why the King is even there in the first place. Not only is it a visually well-produced live action advertisement, it gives a lot of gameplay-relevant information.

When I look at things this way, it's hard to think of other advertisements that aren't just some generic announcements and an out-of-context montage of cutscenes or action.

What comes to mind when I think of irritating game advertisements? Easy. Dead Space 2.

Or as the ads themselves put it... Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2

I'm no game puritan. I love Mortal Kombat X for chrissakes. But this advertisement series is just plain juvenile. Rather than focusing on the game itself, it shows you how old ladies react to it. So fucking what? You can show them probably any remotely violent game and get the same result. It's also a game rated for Adults too, whereas this ad series seems to be aimed at preteens. Who the hell thought this was a good idea?

No EA.... I hate Dead Space 2.

Yeah, I kind of noticed that too. It really does feel like they are trying waaaaay too hard in this trailer. As if to show that their characters now have...character I guess? Whatever.

But, the part that bugs me is what is said at the end. "And the COMPLETE Destiny adventure in the Legendary Edition." Um, excuse me? Shouldn't I have gotten the COMPLETE adventure when I got the game the first time? Look, I'm all for DLC when it expands on the story that is already there. But this? This makes it seem like, "Ha ha! You've only been playing the bare bones addition. You want the real thing? Either buy the game again, or spend all that money on the three DLCs."
I've heard so many people say that this is the way Destiny should have been from day one. Now, I didn't buy the game (got it for free with my PS4), but that just irks me to no end. It really makes me think that year one was just a beta, and now they're charging full price--again--for the actual game. If I had paid for it, I'd be royally pissed right now, and yet people still flock to this game.

At least the music is relegated to just the marketing. Remember when Breaking Benjamin was part of Halo 2's official soundtrack? Talk about a jarring juxtaposition when compared to Marty O' Donnell's score.

I never understood the purpose of live-action game trailers in general. 'Look at us trying to reenact the game in real life -- Doesn't that just make you wanna buy it?' No. No it doesn't. Seeing what the game actually looks like does.

Anyway, this trailer is just trying to appeal to the online shooter crowd, hence the "attitude". Call of Duty trailers pull the same shit. It's annoying, but I never expose myself to it, so no harm done.

The only thing that bugs me about that trailer is that it makes Destiny look like a fun, squad based TPS with space magic powers.

I've never understood Bungie's obsession with live action trailers. They must cost quite a lot to produce and are never indicative of actually gameplay. Although here in the UK, virtually no game trailers that make it to TV are anything but CGI.

Not a Destiny player myself, I kinda knew it was gonna be medicore as Halo's floaty gameplay has never clicked for me, but Bungie seem to have been pretty arrogant about Destiny from the start. The announcement of this DLC in a Eurogamer interview showed how much contempt the studio has for it's audience.

Yeah, I remember that trailer too. Difference is, that trailer didn't pop up at the start of seemingly every video I try to watch on Youtube, hence the annoyance factor was much lower. On the subject of Borderlands 2 and tone: well okay, if the tone in the DLC is more tongue in cheek, fair enough. But Destiny, upon its original release, was never marketed as quirky, offbeat or humorous. All the advertisements (ones that I saw anyway) were more like Halo or Mass Effect: big, sweeping, serious sci-fi. Borderlands 2, from its very first trailer, went exactly for what it was: completely over the top and wacky. Some might find that irritating, which I understand, but I will respect knowing what you are more than Destiny's design by committee approach.

Super annoying trailer. Caught it once on television, possibly during Fear the Walking Dead. Cringe-worthy.

I would've expected better things from the team that brought us "That Wizard came from the Moon".

Pretty annoying. Wasn't going to buy it anyways. End of.
It's just easier to get over it like that.

I found Bioshock Infinite commercial pretty annoying. Its the one where Booker rescues Elizabeth from being hung.

I'm pretty sure that's how they marketed the game in the first place. I remember developers saying that the base game is basically just the bare necessities and that more "game" would be added in the future. They probably said it differently but that was the gist of it.

I just find it annoying since it plays all the goddamn time.

Which is kind of funny, since I always really liked Bungie's advertisements, like the Halo 3 ones.

Yeah, but there are many people who enjoy playing the same levels over and over for the looting/grindy aspect of it. It seems Density in particular is designed around this concept.

Granted the gameplay of Density is exceptional as far as raw mechanics go. It's immensely satisfying. But the (base) game itself is incredibly repetitive and lacking in content. It's great gameplay in a shitty game..if that makes sense. :p

Anyways yeah cinematic trailers are almost always stupid. Though the one that really stands out for me was that of The Witcher 3. That one was freakin awesome and actually could be a scenario in the game. Probably the best cinematic trailer I've seen for a game.

It doesn't make me rage but I agree it's like Joss Whedon's at his worst.

This trailer annoys me just because of how overly dramatic it is. FFS guys, it's just a game. %90 of this trailer has nothing to do with the game. It looks some urban fantasy thing.

I can't watch that trailer, but I know for a fact that nothing can trump this dumb thing:

Because the perfect theme to Space Marines on a Space Hulk hunting Tyranids is some mexican mariachi hip-hop bullshit. Like, what the fuck.

I agree with the general points being made, such as it does come across as though they are trying too hard (If they replaced the characters, I'd think it was a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or something), but I cannot feel myself getting worked up about it at all.

Destiny had my curiosity way back when it was first teased, but since then nothing has made me consider buying it once, and this trailer certainly has not changed my mind.

But it's a fun squad based FPS with space magic powers... it's not too far off.

OT: i always find it funny when people complain about games they've never played. I mean WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT DESTINY? In the new dlc they added a little characterisation of the NPCs and a little funny dialog. Is the story shit ? Yes i won't argue that, but you are attacking the wrong thing.
