wow, people got a poorly laid out maths problem wrong on one of those totally fucking retarded facebook polls, call the President, alert NORAD.

I'm more fucking dissapointed that you joined in on the facebook equivalent of chain-lettering and decided to try and flash your huge E-peen about it.

as far as people not answering correctly being idiots... well clearly the original poster is doing a great job at portraying himself as a cynical jerk. "I know the answer and you don't, therefore you're stoopid" That would be like me saying "Oh my god, like, 1 million people are stupid because they don't know the difference between the ego and the super ego! Boy that makes me depressed!"

It might be a cultural misunderstanding. I've been questioning why everyone keeps using the terminology "maths", when in the US we'd drop the "s" as the correct short form. It's like all of you are speaking French to me. ;) Replace culutral with perceptual and you've got an answer.

(Oddly though, I like screwing around with English majors here in the US I know by adding the "s" to the end of "math")

I mean that math is a constant. 1+1x3 will always be 4 But BEDMAS tells us how we write it. If we added before multiplying we'd have to write 1+(1x3) but the math would still be the same. Yes, there is logic to why BEDMAS is in that order, but it has nothing to do with math, per se.

Edit: To simplify. A basket with one egg and a basket with three eggs always equals four eggs, but if we write it 1+1x3 or 1+(1x3) is arbitrary. We could change it without making the actual math wrong.

Sorry to rain on your parade mate but that's an easy to mistake to make, I thought it was zero at first and not trying to sound full of myself but I study biological sciences at a well-known UK university (Exeter) and got 3 A's in science subjects at A-level. I'm hardly what you'd call dumb, most the people probably did similar to what I did, just thought of a quick answer without really checking the notation closely. Don't fear for humanity just yet =D

You saw the question as 48/(2*(9+3)), but due to the lack of parenthesis it is worked out as:

=(48/2) * (9+3)
=24 * 12
=288

The actual question from the earlier thread was slightly different and even more ambigious if I recall correctly.

Well, we learned order of operations in sixth grade here, so maybe it's not all that bad.

No, you never deal with nothing in your "day-to-day equations". It's zero, nothing, it's not there, you simply don't. This is why some people are good at math and some are not, it's abstract and some people get thrown off by that.

This simple tests shows us a lot about the people who use Facebook - not that they are stupid. But lets look at the whys..

A - They didn't see the lone - in the middle
- Laziness
- Relied on assumption of the whole question without reading it
B - It's Facebook! Who cares? Lets just finish the silly little poll!
- Impatience

C - Math sux and so do u!!!!11111oneeleven This isn't math, it's arithmetic.
- Failure to understand basic mathematical formula


With the exception of perhaps C, I think all others wouldn't qualify as stupid, but in combination, they would.

Wow, this makes me feel so mentally superior because I'm capable of high school math. Go undeserved righteous indignation!! Now tell me, if some of us are such intellectual juggernauts, why aren't we ruling the plebians who can't execute a simple equation? Bow before the math lords, rulers of Grade 12.

You do realize that it's multiplied by 0 at the end, yes? That means that it equals 0.

I thought you might mean that. I was going to say 'it's only arbitrary insofar as that mathematical notation as a whole is arbitrary', but I decided not to. I probably should have done.

Anyhow, I wouldn't agree that 'arbitrary' is quite the correct term. While mathematical truths may exist independently of their notation, the nature of that notation is governed by the necessary logic of its subject, not by some arcane tradition or ancient decision.

And in the example you've given, while there are infinite ways to correctly write a single number, that doesn't seem relevant. Altering the notation can also produce infinite different answers. The difference between writing 1+1x3 and 1+(1x3) is arbitrary, but the difference between those and (1+1)x3 is not. The only purpose of brackets in mathematical notation is to alter the order of functions, and by moving them it is possible to change the solution to an equation.

Well I really needed STR and CON, so I took INT as my dump stat. I mean, does a fighter really need INT at all?

OT: Wow, people got tricked by a purposefully misleading equation. What a surprise. Seriously, most people are going to skim it, notice the x0 at the end and go "Oh it's zero!". It's set up to evoke that response by putting a whole bunch of 1+1+1+... so that people won't want to read the whole thing and look for a short cut.

Well intelligence =/= education, and does it not strike you as ironic when you're not capitalising your sentences?

With brackets it would be zero. Easy mistake to make. I even misread it myself when I started replying to you, then realised I was seeing brackets that weren't there.

Basic order of operations trick. Multiplication always comes before addition provided there are no parenthesis. When you stop doing the basics you forget them. Logarithms, trigonometric functions, and physics formulas are all things I can do eaisly, but 7+8 is the bane of my fucking existence. I can't do it quickly in my head anymore because of all the incredibly complex shit I've learned.
