The Xbox 360 has a better library. That's all I care about. It's really too bad about the PS3. The PS2's library kicked ass.

If Microsoft were to go out of the console business it would be a shame because for all their faults, the two Xbox consoles are pretty good and contributed a great deal to gaming. As for the direction in which the next generation could go, honestly I have no clue. For now, I only see them upgrading on existing hardware (like adding a blue-ray player to the Xbox 360, 3D technology, etc). AAA game development already costs millions, who knows how much would it cost if it had to adapt to an entirely new kind of hardware.

Oh well. We will see.

Maybe there's no word on the new console generation because Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all know the world is going to end in 2012 and they want it to end in style by releasing Bioshock Infinite.

4. Kinect is selling remarkably well. Especially compared to what Sony pulled out of their sleeve.
That's news for me.
How many kinects have ms sold now?
VGChartz says about 4 million which is a decent estimate, I guess. If the half a billion on marketing figure was right then marketing alone has cost them $125 per unit sold. Not really what I would call a huge success yet.

im going to be truthful not offensive
Xbox-some hardcore gamers, few casual, 12yr olds that call you a ****** over XBLAA
PS3- hardcore gamers and some for the younger audience
WII- old people, girls, little kids and people that think they are losing weight by purchasing one
PC gaming-Hrdcore gamers, nerds and older gamers

tbh i think playstations new plus system is amazing i get free games, discounts off latest DLC and its almost as cheap as xbox live but however i cant help but think that sony couldnt give two shits about Playstation in the UK but on my mates xbox they had exclusive shows and updates from IGN about games and it felt more like a community so really psn just NEEDS party chat and would be the best console EVERR
(well pretty damn close)

Actually, I think Microsoft is set to take over the market if they play their games right. The integration between PC and console gaming opens some great doors, which Sony, despite also being a giant company in non-gaming markets, doesn't bother with.

The problem is that Microsoft just can't get this right. They can't get Games for Windows to work (if it did and it integrated with Xbox Live, it could give a number of nifty perks). They can't decide if the 360 competes with the Wii for the casual crowd or the PS3 for the hardcore, maybe because strictly speaking they lose at both. And I won't bother with Live at all, even if it's actually quite cheap.

The Microsoft points thing, I think it's just to make transactions easier. But if PSN works with real cash XLive should as well. It looks like the 360 isn't really bad as opposed to just being shown up by the PS3.

I'd say console gaming is dying out as a whole.

You see what the current consoles can do now. Watch movies, surf the internet, check youtube... eventually people are going to realise, "Hey! This isn't a console anymore! This is a PC!"

Then I shall appear before the new PC users and lead them to the Promised Land of PC gaming as their savior! And there shall be free cookies every Sunday!

Okay, maybe not the last bit there, but can someone give me free cookies every Sunday anyway?
As much as I agree, there will be some (like me) who cannot, for the life of them, get used to a mouse and keyboard for anything other than rts and would much prefer a controller. Then again, I guess a pc controller could be used.

Or, people say "Hey, this is a PC without DRM or any assosciated hassle, you don't have to check system requirements that aren't always accurate before playing a game, and it can be played from a couch or similarly relaxed position! Sweet!"

And consoles can even have mods, most games just don't support it.

Well, yes I would be upset. Xbox is my favourite console. I could live without it but quite frankly I don't think I system where Sony and Nintendo monopolize the harcore and casual audiences respectively would be good for consumers.

Besides, the console race is so hilarious, why would you deprive humanity of such a spectacuar facepalm-worthy slapfight?

The Xbox had a controller for the hardcore and a sensor for the casuals. There's something for both. One is not trying to replace the other. The hardcore are acting like the Xbox is "tainted" because it has a controller for casuals. Fear not, Kinect isn't going to steal Halo, Gears and CoD from you.

For months now Xbox is the only console selling better this year than last year. Both Wii and PS2 are down. I don't see how you can come to the conclusion that it's doomed in the face of this evidence. It's selling more Kinect sensors than Move, it's selling more consoles than its competitors, and it's selling more games. Yes, the sensors were brought out to increase the lifespan of the console. Devs need more time with a large install base because they need more of those million sellers to offset the increased cost of making games these days.

If there's a console maker destined to exit the race next gen, it's Sony, not Microsoft or Nintendo.

To put it frankly, your arguement is flawed, highly flawed, however, you do have some points that can be elaborated upon.

I personally think Nintendo has a long legacy to go, Nintendo keeps its wits and despite having its down moments, manages to hold its own because the company as a whole is usually the market leader, they are innovative, they are creative and they demonstrate where gaming should take it's next turn. When you think about it, the only thing Wii lacks is online, and only because we've gotten to a point as humans where we rely on online facilities to communicate does this become a major issue, other than that, Nintendo finds ways to make gimmicks the new craze, to become less of a gimmick and more of a neccessity. You have to give a clap to Nintendo, not to mention the strongest of the three with first parties that make millions in thier own right.

On to Sony, Sony has held its own because it has a habit of copying, however, many of these so called copies are actually as good if not better than the original, but what makes PS3 special is the fact it integrates what makes Xbox popular and what makes Wii popular. Sony has had its downfalls, but it always overcomes those shortcomings and is racing towards being the second best selling console this generation, simply because Xbox's appeal worldwide at the moment isn't as great as Sony's. There are several reasons for this that I will go into in a moment when I discuss Xbox. Sony has focused upon first parties and continues to broaden it, realising that developers are only really making exclusive DLC nowadays and most of them go in the direction of Xbox, because Xbox is easy to develop for, it has a massive user base and Microsoft has BIG pockets filled with wads of cash to give away. However, Sony's new tactic works in its favour recently, because where they used to focus on third parties, thier first party games are now becoming the attraction, after all, would you prefer exclusive DLC for a multiplat game on Xbox or an entire exclusive game on PS3 WITH DLC? If Sony continues this, expands on this to Nintendo's number of exclusive titles and at the same time opens it's doors and welcomes third parties, Sony will stay in the game and even so much as pose the biggest threat.

Xbox now, Xbox is powerful beyond means but it's main issues at the moment are it too closely resembles the architecture of PCs, which is good in once sense because development is easier, but bad in another because....well, porting is easier too. My main problem was that many of the games I had on Xbox were also available on PC, and were the exclusives of Gears and Halo for examples enough to keep me on board, not really. If anything XBL is what I now miss because it was so functional, fluid and efficiant, something I don't get often on PC games but always got on Xbox. There is also the issue of games that were once exclusive like Mass Effect popping up on PS3 with better graphics, more modes etc, but just a few years later or even a mere few months, this is a pain in the arse, because while it's nice to have a game when it first releases, to PS3 owners, the year gap doesnt really mean that much, if they hadn't played it on 360, this is thier chance to do so on PS3. All that demonstrates is my point of third parties becoming less keen to make exclusives, for every third party Microsoft has formed a relationship with, so too has Sony, which basically means that Microsoft will need to adopt the Nintendo and Sony approach more and start making more of it's own first party exclusives. Other than that, there is no problem with the Xbox, Live is worth the money spent on it, despite Sony's offering, the games are fun and the console is good value. Microsoft will stay in the game as long as they have the money to keep going, the thing is, when Microsoft is making millions in a single second, they can afford to take more losses than the other two companies, you would have thought that with the massive loss on the original Xbox they would have bailed out, but oh no, they are still in the game and always will be once thier pockets remain deep. Not only that, Microsoft has realised that software cannot be it's only form of income anymore, it needs to diversify as a company in order to make money, and if there is anything you can give Micro credit for, its persistance. It will never back down until it has won a war, it wants to beats out google, apple, sony, nintendo, facebook and any other competitor it faces, and so far...Micro has been doing a pretty damn good job, may not be the best in any of those fields, but it is sure as hell determined to wiggle its way into becoming so.

Do I think Microsoft will be the first to drop out of the console race? The three titans? Hell no, not any time in our life time, thats for damn sure.

I read like three lines of the first post when I just had to slap myself.

Seriously. I mean SERIOUSLY.

"My boyfriend and I have 360's." That's what you said. And yet you say Microsoft is out of the running?

R U SERIUS?

The SINGLE console you two have in common. Meaning the only one out of your sample size, that is owned by BOTH parties... And you're saying they're falling behind?

Right, cause in your situation alone two people having the console (Meaning MAXIMUM exposure to said console) is so horribly deflating that Microsoft should toss in the towel and quit now.

I really don't see Sony or Microsoft going anywhere soon.

The console sales are pretty close. I think Sony are down about 4 million, which isn't exactly a huge margin. The 360 has an advantage in game sales, but, again, not a huge margin if the relative amount of 360 and PS3 in Gamespots are any indication.

The biggest advantage the 360 has is Xbox Live is a big money maker, but it's also a bit of a weakness. Perhaps the biggest indication of this is Valve, who not very long ago were declaring they would never develop for the PS3 again... a decision they recently reversed by openly allying themselves with the company. The reason why is the restrictive nature of XBL, which limits the amount of free DLC a company can offer. This is the reason why Team Fortress has been left hanging.

I often comment that Sony & Nintendo don't really get the Internet, which I think is why Microsoft managed to get such a lead in this important category, emphasizing on-line play and even going so far to charge for it... but if Sony is embracing a more free system, then they might find themselves attracting some major companies. This could be very important if and when the MMO hits the consoles in a big way. The upcoming DCU Online is coming to the PC & PS3... a rather strange pairing (games released only on PC & 360 are much more common). Have no clue what's going on here, but I wonder if its tied to Microsoft's XBL restrictions. Also Final Fantasy XIV MMO is on PS3 and PC, which deepens my suspicions.

As for exclusives. A lot of the reason why you're seeing Xbox losing exclusives is because they were either never contractual exclusives or merely timed exclusives. Since devs often develop on the 360 then port to the PS3, it's probably not that big of a deal for them to give MS a six month or one year exclusive, so they have time to do a proper PS3 port. Other developers simply don't have the money to develop for both and picked the 360, but once they have a hit on their hands, they go multi-platform. And there's a really good reason for that which can be summarized in five words.

Halo and Call Of Duty.

Halo is a massive hit for the 360, but its sales are roughly half that of Call Of Duty. Even Epic is ditching the 360 exclusive Gears Of War and going multi-platform. Most of the other notable 360 exclusives come from Microsoft owned companies. Same looks to be true of PS3. Basically everyone else says to hell with it and develops for both, because they have the potential to make more money that way. The trend away from exclusive games will continue, but I'm sure many will take MS's money for timed exclusives.

I think Sony will continue to chip away at MS's dominance, using their less restrictive access to on-line content to woo major publishers into their camp (mostly in the guise of PS3 versions that take full advantage of the hardware, instead of being a carbon-copy port, but also more MMO games with the PC/PS3 split). If they ever manage to make a significant dent in MS's lead, I'd expect to see XBL restrictions reduced to remain competitive. And from the consumer side of things, most will continue not to care, selecting one or the other on the basis of the exclusives or what their friends have.

As you have been told many times already, almost everything you have said was wrong but the biggest thing that stands out to me is that you dont realize that Kinect =/= Xbox 360. It isnt a new console but an add on.

Sony is the one who will be in trouble next generation their Playstation Move isnt selling, developers STILL dont like the platform, and it seems like they are more interested in releasing what should have been the AAA console titles (God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear) on the PSP. Sony needs to stop trying to copy everybody elses ideas and work on more than just pretty graphics and bluray because Uncharted alone isnt going to secure the PS4 and sure as hell wont be Resistance or Killzone.

I'm not even going to touch Nintendo because as far as I know they are a handheld developer because the Wii is living on borrowed time, when the casual crowd flocks to something else their success will plummet. Its already starting to happen due to Kinect. I dont know how many times I hear people say they, "haven't touched their Wii but are going to buy Kinect because it can do the same without a remote and my kid can play Halo."

::sigh:: Now I've just come off as a fanboy....

While you have a point in some circumstances, I have to disagree with you in others. Developers do like PS3, there were those who had thier doubts about it at first, even strong doubts to the point they cursed it right to hell and said it would never take off and each and every one of them has had to eat thier words and even so much as apologise for thier comments.

Atari doomed the PS3, they in turn suffered the wrath of bankruptcy, Valve cursed the PS3, but have now gone to Sony with thier tails between thier legs and Itakagi hated the PS3, not a feeling his company Tecmo shared, even in his new development team he is making multiplatform games.

Its not that they didn't like PS3 as such, it might be that they just had qualms with Sony's initial arrogant attitude towards the gaming industry, Sony too has had several blows to the face and had to back down, they made outrageous claims a few years ago, motion controls suck, the war doesnt start till they enter, blu ray will dominate the world, UMD is the format of choice etc etc etc and realised big talk gets nowhere because at the end of the day, the consumers are the most powerful force and should never be trifled with. PS3 exclusives right now are what are propelling the PS3 bac to success, and YES, it will propel PS4 to success because gamers don't care about big talk, or gimmicks or fancy drivle, they just want GAMES.

I'm sorry. You have no idea what you're talking about. NOBODY is dropping out of the console war anytime soon. What a lot of "x" console is going to die in "y" amount of time arguments don't seem to account for is that both Sony and MS sell things other than games and games hardware. Sony has tv's and all that jazz and MS has the worlds largest OS. They have enough money tor ride this out for ages.

http://www.vgchartz.com/ Just judging by the sales figures. I think that Nintendo will become the only mainstream hardware company and Microsoft and Sony will both put out another console. But both consoles will be regarded as niche products that only appeal to the Old Guard(that is us).
