I guess I would like to get into Warhammer. What's it like in there?

Only advice I'll give: Space Marines, Dark angels. THEY ARE THE SHIT.
Ok, just kidding. It's an expensive hobby and unless your going into it to stick I would start off light. Ask about in the store and see what race appeals to you. Also, you should have a read of the Lexicanum if you are looking for fluff. Might help you in choosing an army.

PS. If you get space marines, ALWAYS, ALWAYS play 1st edition rules. Because space marines ROCK in them.

Come, enter, join us Warhammer'ites (?) in our awesomeness..

Ahem, anyway its good stuff, if your into this kind of stuff you can meet some really cool peeps and also some really nice people who like what you like.. also, even if you don't necessarily like the modelling (I certainly love painting) its nice just to show off and talk about these things..

If I could sum Warhammer tabletop up in one sentence its that:

"Its a great laugh, with great people who want to have fun.."

Thats it, if your school, college or whatever has a club I'd consider going and just try to get on with some of the guys and girls there, if you know some already, mores the better...

PS. I'd make sure your wallet can handle it before you start..

Captcha: Order 187 (OMG there's been an outbreak.. to the bunker..)

I used to play Skaven.

Best fun ever. I hardly ever won, but it was never about winning.

It was about rolling a 1, then imagining a rat drop an orb of poison gas on it's foot, and poisoning all it's allies in a 2-inch radius.

Good times. I will recommend you read up on the army before you buy. I had one or 2 models i could never use 'cos I didn't buy the unit they were meant to attach to. And skaven are all about strength in numbers anyway. A box of clanrats and basic paint kit is the way to see if this is the hobby for you.

I used to be relaly into it (hence the username), but they kept dumbing it down and I got fed up and quit.

One thing to remember, they keep bringing out updates, but not evenly for all. For example, the dark eldar recently got some new stuff, for the first time in 10 years or so. Meanwhile, marines have been updated and revised 3 times for the main groups in that time, with all sorts of new ones added and updated as well. Dark eldar players were really left in the lurch. Squats for 40k and Chaos Dwarfs for WH were quietly removed from the universe. Loads of old Imperial Guard models can still be used, but they aren't sold everywhere anymore, if they are still being made...if that was your army, tough. If the army you choose doesn't sell well, you're sorta stuffed.

On the other hand, not being updated be a good thing. The backstory and setting changes more than in your average comic series. They like taking armies and changing the theme when they update them. The Flesh Tearers used to be particularly nasty and aggressive, then were having problems with too many members going insane and now have realised they'll be extinct soon, and have decided to go out in a blaze of glory. The Dark Angels used to be warrior-monks, but now they are all traitors committed terrible crimes to cover up their terrible crimes. If GW decides to change the theme of your army in a way you don't like, you're stuffed.

This also applies to individual units...you might have lovingly painted your expensive models, only to find that there wasn't room in the rulebook for them. Up til recently, a number of tanks weren't in the Imperial Guard book anymore, despite them existing in previous issues and models being sold. Or they way they work has changed, your army built around a certain thing isn't viable anymore.

The price is prohibitive but it's totally worth it if you can find a good group to play with. My buddies and I didn't like the crew at the local games store so we started our own league and we love our hobby. Be careful though. I know too many horror stories of people getting, quite simply, in over their heads. And like Tynermeister said, it's not so much about the winning as it is about the imagining of catastrophic events (for better or for worse) happening to your troops. Who can help but laugh when a warp storm consumes a barbed heirodule that had just arrived on the field moments ago.
