Good for you, once you get past some of the generic 'faces' of animer like Naruto ot DBZ there is some actually good anime out there.

I had the same problem at first, but then I was aquainted with my all time favorite of Cyborg 009

Ya there is good and bad just like anything else.

I'm curious as to why you did not like soul eater tho. I really enjoyed it. You just have to accept that it is not 100% serious all the time.

Avatar=not anime. Samurai C isn't even what I'd call a good example of classic anime. Saying Elfen Lied sucked? Wow, you have no idea what you're talking about. One of the top 20 best, easily.

unfunny Japanese style humor. paper thin characters. weird annoying plot and the only redeeming feature being cool fight scenes.

I watch a tremendous amount of Anime at work+home. Almost sad, Hulu is at least doing something constructive.

This thread is now about Anime Discussion, since their really isn't any constructivism in his post to base discussion a pone.

I always hated DBZ. Among other things it had way too much filler.

Anyway, If you are looking for a good one that has have a bit of action in it try Cowboy Bebop. Currently I am watching Spice and Wolf, Which I would reccomend If you can deal with long stretches of people talking about Economics.

I approve of most of this, but you didn't like Elfen Lied? Hmm. Well, each to their own.

You could try watching Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin and similar, aka popular, anime. Then try stuff like Elfen Lied later on.

Pretty much it start's off as a basic plot if man (the tiular 009) waking up in a lab and trying to escape. He is saved from 8 other cyborg's similar to him who were brought to the same lab and weaponized into cyborgs for diffrent reasons.

It doesnt sound that great at first but the character's and the plot are really well written with some nice action scenes, and you can find most of it online

Avatar has the art style and story telling of anime. As for Elfen Lied, That is your opinion.

People who do not like anime usually just generalize. Only people who can hate ALL anime without being ignorant would have to hate it for being animated.

Works for me. It means someone has finally experienced the idea that "it's not all the same generic crap."

That the first one he really liked is Samurai Champloo is just icing on the cake.

When most people agree on something, it becomes fact. I won't put a number on it, but to say it isn't good is just plain wrong. You can dislike it, but that doesn't make it bad.

Let's get real, it's pretty hard to hate Samurai Champloo ;)

edit: it just bugs me because these "live journal" style posts would have been immediately banned two years ago on the ol' escapist, but everything seems to be slipping.

The thing about anime is that it isn't a genre; it's a style. Unless you just hate that type of art, you can't really say that you "hate anime", because every show is unique and has its own story to tell and way of telling it.

I don't watch a whole lot of anime myself, but I have seen some really fantastic stuff come out of it. The first ten episodes of Death Note, for example. Good stuff is out there, and it's not too hard to find if you take a few hours to look for it.

Ok if you don't like Japanese humor then I get why you wouldn't like it AT ALL. I found the plot interesting though I can see how it could be called "weird". However once you get into the later episodes the characters actually get really deep and full back-stories/personalities.

Well, since you will only like a more serious anime I'm going to suggest to you "Death Note", I hope you like it!

Samurai Champloo works the same as Cowboy Bebop, As long as the anime wants to tell a story. Basically all of the episodes were fillers but they where organized to give a background to the characters. So when the Anime finished up, It felt truly finished, Even if The endings where cheesy.

Um, brah, brah, brah, Samurai Champloo was amazingly awesome, and too this day still gives me extreme joy/sadness whenever I look at it nostalgially, it makes me wish they had memory erasers just so I could watch it over again and see the epicness one more time.
By far my favorite series/Anime.
