Just looking at the length of the thread, I am certan I've been ninja'd at least a thousand times, but for what it's worth, sounds like you need to see Cowboy Bebop:

Samurai Champloo.
I only watched the 13 first episode, had to be away from my comp a few days and never got back to it. Funny stuff, action maybe not realistic but not any over the top dragonball stuff, characters have stories and so on and as far as I think the first 10 episodes set a great start for a good story in later episodes.
damn you ninja'ing me. but good call i got the whole lot on dvd for less than 20 quid, i love a good deal :D
That's nice.
And only 26 episodes, I think a friend of mine got it so I might be borrowing :)

The anime series I have tried to watch is:
Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, Full metal alchemist, Naruto, DBZ, Death Note and some other stuff I can' remember!

So all supernatural except NGE which Ive not watch but is listed under /Action, Drama, Mecha, Sci-Fi, Psychological
You say you're open minded but you cant watch it unless its fairly "realistic"?
Watch "Lucky star"! Its about teenage girls
. (Good humor series don't need anything of the tings I have stated. As long as it's funny) So, do you accept the challenge?

Lucky star is pretty funny! Its Genre: Comedy, Parody, School, Slice of Life,
Perhaps these are the genre of anime you should look into

Nope I don't accept the challenge because you clearly dislike everything about it, and you will try your very best to hate every single one people suggest, so what is the point?

It's like asking to make you like cock...
Now that would be easy ;D

Fucking Outlaw Star!

Interesting characters? Check.
Lack of annoying female voices? Check.
Humour that doesn't detract from the story? Check.
Long enough to be keep you entertained but not so long that 50% of episodes are fillers? Check (25 episodes).
Seriously, this is the first 'proper' anime I ever watched (I don't count DBZ). You won't regret it, it doesn't have an angsty, douchebag undercurrent like a lot of newer anime series.
I fucking love outlaw star... Havn't seem it im a yonks... literal yonks... Goog call good call
Hot damn! I rewatched this recently, and what a fine show it is. I'd rate it alongside Bebop.

As someone who also hates 90% of anime, let me show you some that I personally thought were pretty good.

-Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu is the only anime that has managed to make me laugh. Some people say Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star is hilarious but I watched a couple of episodes of both shows and I promptly wanted to kill myself.

-Ergo Proxy is a good anime. It is a bit depressing though so I'm not too sure you'd like it.

-Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are good without being too over-the-top. I also think they're more easily accessible to people who dislike anime as they both have a lot of western influence.

Here's something you can do:

At 19:00 GMT on Saturday, there will be a number of us watching the start of Claymore together, with a chat box e.t.c.

Feel free to come along, and then you can see why we like it, and hopefully end up liking it yourself =)

[sub]For those of you interested, it's now a group that will hopefully be doing this kind of thing regularly.[/sub]

I think someone else already mentioned it, but Last Exile is definitely one of the best anime series produced in the last decade. I had a friend who was similar to you in that he was never really sold on anime, but wanted to like it and gave different shows chance after chance, and then I finally recommended Last Exile and he was hooked. So, at the very least, I know this series is a good one for hooking in the naysayers! lol

It's a good series for newcomers foremost because it doesn't suffer from the heavily clichéd anime tropes you see in series like Full Metal Alchemist, Evangelion and Naruto. I would say ignore people who have recommended Azumanga Diaoh to you as well, not because it's not a fantastic series, but because it plays heavily to anime tropes and is very set within the anime world in it's humour - from the outside it might just seem puerile or overly slapstick.

Another recommendation I would make is Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo). It's an episodic psychological horror series which I think is genuinely scary and manages to avoid most anime clichés. There is a good dose of Japanese mythology sprinkled throughout the series which, from a foreign point of view, is deeply affecting and helps to create the fear factor in its unfamiliarity. Great series if psychological horror is your thing, definitely.

Also, if you enjoyed Spirited Away then I wholly recommend you check out both Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle. Both fantastic anime films by Studio Ghibli; the trailer for Howl's Moving Castle (my personal favourite) is below.

Failing all of that... then I'd say go with my favourite anime series of all time which is Full Metal Panic. lol... it's probably not your thing, but this trailer makes it look awesome! xD. Basically, it's an anime series which takes the giant mecha genre and tries to make it more realistic with a militaristic settling and a more 'internationally aware' storyline.

Viewtiful Joe is kind of ridiculous at times, but it's funny and cool.

Valkyria chronicles is a well-polished emotional series about war and love.

I've been thinking about it, and I believe that one's fandom for Anime has a positive correlation with Doctor Who. They both exhibit stories that demand you suspend your disbelief, A LOT, and the Doctor speaks technobabble at a rate that many anime characters would envy. This might be personal experience, but I feel like anime was my gateway to Doctor Who, and I am fine with that. It is a fandom that is ever so slightly less maligned.

Also, a response to that might as well make you like cock comment has made itself aware to me.

Check out Hajime No Ippo. It's a great anime, the only flaw is that they occasionally like to lengthen fights to the point where it becomes annoying. Other than that it's great in every aspect.

Gantz is also great once you can get past the huge amounts of dialogue.
