Pure FPS's aren't really my thing either, but if it's perhaps say an FPS RPG though like say Fallout 3, that I can have fun with. You know where I still get to talk to NPCs and do stuff other than shoot things with over compensatory penis extensions.

I enjoy FPS'. They aren't my favorite genre, but they are fun.
I would suggest either TF2 or the Battlefield series they are the better ones out there. If you want one with less shooting, Mirrors Edge or Mine Craft.

They sort of bore me. I just don't like them. Does anybody else not like fps's?

EDIT: I feel like I should explain more. First, I just think other genres are more fun. Second, I think most are ugly, monotone, blood splattered blehs. Third, most of them are rated mature, but they are anything other than that. Third, they just bore me. I will neve be able to be engaged by killing clone grunts with a single bullet to the head.

EDIT 2: My question is, why do you like fps's and can you reccomend a few games that might change my opinion.
The only FPS's I really like are Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Metroid Prime.
TF2 is the most "traditional" FPS on this list, but it has a lot of personality and quirks that set it apart from the dull brown FPS's that are normally assosiated with the genre.
Portal kinda doesn't count because it's a puzzle game, but it's an extremely entertaining game even with its short play time.
Metroid Prime is a fun, colourful game (that's right, an actual colour pallete) that focuses on exploration and finding secrets, even if Nintendo claims that Metroid Prime isn't an FPS.
They're all excellent games and I would reccomend all of them for someone who doesn't play/enjoy "traditional" FPS's.

So what? You hate modern FPSs? Well ok,play some Quake or Team Fortress 2 or Painkiller. and may I remind you that Painkiller has a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning, which means that it could only be cooler if it had tits and was on fire.

what you need are some from the hay day of FPS games... like Deus Ex or System Shock 2, when they were actually trying to push the boundaries of what can be done with the idea of shooting stuff from the first person perspective... even some newer games on the PC market are still continuing the tradition, like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series or AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!, which I highly recommend...<.<

I like FPS when they force you to strategize. Say, In Crysis and Crysis Warhead you can charge right in if you want, and you'll probably be slaughtered if you aren't extremely skilled.

I prefer sniping each enemy without being caught, or at least having to retreat or ambush enemies. I play almost game like a strategy game. I've also never played CoD because any time I see someone playing one, it's straight action with minimal strategy.

I enjoy the faster pace of FPS as opposed to other genre's, however, I lean more on the sci-fi side of the line because it reduces cheap deaths like Cod and other Realistic shooters.

As for an individual game, I recommend Half-life 2, the graphics sill hold up, it has a good story, and genuinely likable characters without resorting to cliche. its not a hard game, but you still feel engaged in the experience

First Person Shooter is NOT a genre. It is a Graphical perspective.
No... FP is a perspective FPS is a genre
The First Person with Shooting does not a genre make.

Is it action? Is it horror? Is is a war game or is it a crime-sim? Is it Strategy? RPG? Adventure? Arcadey?

The perspective doesn't tell you what genre it really is. Genre literally means "kind" or "sort" as in "what sort of game is it"

Saying "it's an FPS" is useless as that means it could be anything between Mirror's Edge and Duke Nukem. It does NOT tell you what kind of game it is.

It's as relevant a recommendation as saying:
"this movie, it's shot in technicolor" or
"you'll like this book, it's told from the first person perspective"

The FPS label was coined back in the early early days when everyone was doing Doom rip-offs and it became apparent how churlish it was to keep calling them "doom clones". In games the first-person perspective can be highly effective and shooting is a natural part of that since the early days as it is so easy to aim this way. As the games branched out from doom's tropes the term FPS stuck as it was so convenient.

But the fact remains, it's inappropriate to say FPS is a genre when if it was then it would cover an impossibly wide range of themes to be a useless label.

If you are fed up of low-brow war shooters then say you are fed up of low-brow war shooters, don't act like all FPS games are low-brow war shooters and say "I hate FPS games".

OK, it is useful for unlike other media, the perspective is important as some people literally get nauseous from First Person perspective. Other reasons include a strong preference to be able to actually see your avatar.

Depends on the game. A game should know what it's function should be, too many aim at a good narrative but have a shit deliverance/execution. Others try to focus on graphics and lose out on gameplay. Come to think of it the two points kind of co-relate. Most FPS fail on gameplay alone for me so for the large part I do agree with you. On the other hand it is sometimes satisfying to find someone's head quicker then they do yours, or to outsmart them by using terrain and such, course not many games pull any of that off well.

Want to try a good FPS, I suggest trying Unreal Tournament. It's not focused on realism or any type of narrative, they just give you some awesome guns and tell you to chase player around with them. Play Vehicle Team Deathmatch on UT3, put on the kill slow-mo mod and choose that sand map (I can't remember the name). Should have a blast, especially if you remember that all guns have alternate functions, as do the vehicles.

I like them if you want a game that might change your mind try the Metroid prime trilogy for the wii. They focus more on exploration than shooting though.

Eh, I've discovered that FPS's pretty much are just good for the 'FUCK YEAH, TEAMWORK!' experience it can provide. Primarily series like Borderlands, Battlefield, Left 4 Dead and many others.

...But Call of Duty is a total lone wolf fest, not counting the 'zombie' modes. Expecting teamplay in CoD is like going into an RPG expecting guns to be a default weapon option.

...Although, I feel like that analogy could be expanded upon.

Hey,it's may be a ZP reference, but it's also one of my badges, which is why I mentioned it.
But we wouldn't notice things like that now would we?

FPS games are my true gaming love. As much as my OCD compelled in MMOs, I often get bored with the monotony of gather, quest, return. FPS games engage my attention span and I always feel like I am moving forward. Games can't be everything to everybody, so it's really no surprise you don't like FPS games.

I recommend Half-Life 2 if you have never played it. Another good single player is Bioshock. I would stay away from FPS multi-player. You don't sounds like the type of person to enjoy playing the same map over and over again.

Well, if you can't differentiate between the value of some pixels and some people, maybe you shouldn't play games where you shoot them, and maybe I should thank you for not wanting to play them.
read the second edit.
I have.

They are not concepts of humans, they are empty shells, designed in a way to make them look like humans. To say they are a copy, a clone of humans is to imply some sort of intelligence, or consciousness to some degree. They have neither, and to imply they are a "concept" of us is insulting to one of the highest degrees, as you have insulted yourself(unless of course you are an alien, which I doubt), and another 7 billion people who do not deserve to be insulted in such a way. I suggest you think before you speak next time.
I suggest you don't overthink. Then again, perhaps I'm overthinking it.

Overthink? Have I unexpectedly dived into a forgotten meaning or law in the universe that will undoubtedly cause horror and hatred? Have I discovered an ancient theory that will make humanity throw itself down and give up all hope? No? Then I haven't "overthunk"(for lack of a better term). My reply was an automatic one, to address your insult to humanity as a whole.
Look, I apologize for being an idiot. Happy?

Yes.

OT: Most games I play are FPS'es and I find most of them funny, at the very least, as they're unbelievably pathetic attempt at smart A.I. stare me lovingly in the face as I place bets on how long they'll last. And yeah, some are well put together and have actual characters and they're A.I. can actually be considered more than a very persistent bug.
Can you reccomend any? Not many people can beat me in an argument, and you have therefore earned my respect.

Well, obviously there's Portal, but again that's obvious. Bioshock is a masterpiece in and of itself, you should definitely check that out. There's Deus Ex:thatnewone is coming out. Also, Fallout:New Vegas, or Fallout 3(it's really a preference) are pretty good, and Oblivion is viewed from a first-person perspective, which is odd for sword and ax gameplay, but is pretty smooth due to the 3 games of trial and error in the field, Skyrim is coming out in November, if your interested(Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout NV/3 all have 3rd person modes but they're absolutely awful). Also, if you've ever watched Extra Credits, there is an episode for games you may never have heard of, check that out, it's on this website. Gears of War is fun gameplay wise, but the story is complete dross and the gore is is a bit over the top. The independent field is a canidate, though it will be pretty dry because the indie field is always about innovation, which would be hard to come by. Child of Eden looks colorful, though I haven't played played it. Those are my suggestions, hope it helps.

Also, Mirrors Edge has bad handling in my opinion, and Amnesia Dark Descent has been personally recommended to me, though horror isn't my favorite genre. Penumbra is by the same developers, and is also a horror FPS.
