Yeah, current gen consoles suck so much in that regard, my nephew couldn't get his shiny new Xbone up and running since Christmas, until I helped him out however I could. "Next gen" my ass. Last time I checked, the WiiU doesn't need to install jack shit*, pop in the disc and start playing. Simple as that.

[small]*If it's the first time you boot up the console, then yeah, there's a mandatory update and a TON of stuff you need to configure the first time you boot it up, but after everything is up and running, just pop in a disc and start playing!, if your game has an update, it's completely optional, you can still play the game without it, unless you want to play it online, or want some nifty DLC stuff... or both, like with MK8.[/small]

As a PC gamer, I often hear the argument of consoles being better because "they just work".

With that out of the way, sounds like the store was understaffed and you were under-prepared. Try not to take it too hard and know that you're not the first or the last to suffer such an experience.

Try not to be so angry at the parents - imagine them having to explain to their kid why they just had the crappiest birthday ever (from the kid's perspective). They probably felt worse about it than you, and took a bit of it on you because as far as they're concerned you're the expert on the matter.

If your store manager learns the right lesson from this, such an event could be avoided in the future.

I own both the Xbone and a PS4, the Xbones setup was horrible. Trying to get it to accept my gamertag (it kept invalidating the email address) and waiting for updates it was a very unpleasant experience. The PS4 initial setup was much smoother but after its setup the menus and functions are not as fluid and intuitive as the Xbones, the Xbones menus and settings are better presented and everythings where it "should be".

It makes me laugh though, the long install and update times when you want to play a game for the first time. With my PC in the time it took me to install say GTA V I can download a complete AAA sized game, install it and start playing. This "convenience" console only owners claim to have is a myth, it seems there is just as much faffle with consoles now.

I came in here thinking you meant installations as in GoW 1&2 being on PS2 and 3 being on the PS3. Which makes me upset at Bloodborne.

Anyways, that sounds pretty shitty, and while you could have scheduled some prep time before the party, it can be very stressful to be "the new employee that fucked up." Because I've been there and it sucks. I would have asked the owners daughter for help (if I understand right she was there and should have been running damage control for you). I would stay late and learn how to use the Xbone's menus and shit. I think it's a shitty console and would avoid using it, but if you use it for work, I'd have sunk a few after hours into knowing how to operate it.

But I'm sorry about your experience so have an internet hug from me.

She did indeed help me out with setting it up to begin with. Also, I mentioned I wasn't aware there was a party at any time. Which threw me off, cause it was entirely un-expected... Blah.

Luckily the kids went back to their place and had the rest of their party events there (As this was only a small chunk of it), so I can be content the parents at least tried and salvaged it on their own at some other location

Totally unrelated to most of the OP but I do have a fair bit of dislike for the time it takes just to start up a game nowadays (on the Ps4/Xbone anyway, the Wii U doesn't suffer this, probably due to the flash storage rather than HDD).

I popped GTA V into my PS4 the other night and sat around for at least half an hour to 45 minutes installing the updates and then the game itself, and it had nothing to do with download times either (100/40 unlimited fibre, the updates downloaded in under a minute).

Thankfully it didn't take so long for other games, I don't remember waiting around for Infamous Second Son or first light.

To me it's still not as bad as having to wait forever to download every game in my Steam library, installing the games and waiting for the same lengthy process and it getting worse when it's a Ubisoft game on Steam since launching from Steam always launches Uplay which then tells me to download and install the game from Uplay's client 100% of the time which ultimately fucks over any enjoyment to be had.

And then there's the "verify cache" part which feels like forever in order to sort a game installation gone wrong.

PC game installations are still the most annoying for me, I'd rather buy a physical console game/handheld and have it work mostly right off the bat.
