Yeah I'm with you on that one, I found the game to be quite tedious and over the top hard. Also I completely agree with you on checkpoint systems, they are a truly terrible mechanic.I hate checkpoint systems like Yahtzee hates QTEs, in fact I made a vow that somehow, someway, I will rid the world of checkpoint systems forever.

The same thing happened with me and The Witcher 2. Seeing all the praise that it was getting on this forum, I bought it expecting an amazing sprawling epic with amazing characters, incredible, skillful combat, deep levels of customization, and a story that treated me like an adult. What a got was a forgetful story, generic characters, and combat that was fun when it felt like it. Still worth the twenty bucks that I paid for it, but nothing I'm going to remember 5 years down the line.

So very, very wrong.

All I didn't like in the game was the fucking amoeba enemies near the end. People who got to that bit know what I'm on about.
Not much to say as I totally agree with this quote. I found it to be one of the best games I've played in quite some time, finding myself totally absorbed in the world. 2034/Last Light is my most anticipated title.

Horses for courses it seems, I think JRPGs are generally diabolical and wonder why they are so popular.

God damn amoebas. Nary a more perfect suicide bomber has ever existed. Creepers, eat your heart out.

OT: I never had trouble with the difficulty early on. I got stuck around Frontline, but that was because I didn't know how to sneak past them, so I ended up between a rock and a hard place. More accurately, on the bridge between Nazis and Soviets. That was fun.

Regardless, I never found the enemy A.I. ball breaking, as you put it. I just had to play it smart and pick them off.

Perhaps it's not for everyone, but I'd say it's a personal favorite of mine, and made sure I'm getting Last Light on day one.

I am surrently playing through Metro 2033, and it is not what I expected at all. That's not to say that I do not enjoy it, but I was expecting a more open world as well.

I also HATE checkpoint save systems. They are the reason why I HATE consoles. They are used because of the limitations placed on consoles and the developers never bother to streamline for PC! PCs have ridiculous amounts of hard drive space! Let me use it dammit!
What year are you from? 1999? We're not playing on Playstations, Sega Genesis, and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems/Nintendo 64s anymore. "Checkpoint save systems are used because of limitations placed on consoles" hasn't been true for the last two console generations.

Checkpoint systems are used for a number of reasons, with the power of the console not being one of them.
That's where they started, and they are a, "Feature," that continues in a good many games to this day. I can't think of one advantage to a system that doesn't give the player the option of where and when to save their game. Hell, I have a Sega Genesis game that allows user-defined saves!

I know full well that some console games do have user-defined saves. Skyrim for the X360 is one that comes to mind. However, why is it that so many do not use anything other than checkpoints? They certainly don't add anything - especially if one is forced to play a long, annoying segment over and over again.

Give me a good reason to use a checkpoint system and completely leave out the options of a user-defined system in a current generation console game; especially one that is ported to PC. There is no reason why a PC game should not give the player the ability to save their game whenver they want. There is no harm whatsoever in including both features. Giving the user that kind of control can only improve the experience.

That being said, I am not here to turn this into a PC vs console debate. However, my gripes with Metro 2033 revolve around the fact that it was in fact ported to PC, and the port left a lot to be desired. The PC version could have been so much better. In fact, it could have been a much better game if it was developed on the PC and the ported to consoles - most console ports would be.

I used to be a huge fan of quicksaves, but I've come to realize they ruin games. Saving after every kill isn't immersive or fun, it just removes any aspect of challenge, so that even the shittiest player can play a perfect game.

You can't compare it to fallout or stalker, it's not open world. It's a linear game that prides itself in its atmosphere, and that it doe swell. Everything else with the game is iffy but I enjoyed it enough.

ME?!? But... why? I loved you, BloatedGuppy! D:

I've never played the game, but having something hyped into oblivion and then not enjoying it sucks, so I feel your pain.

First run was partially difficult on normal, second was a piece of cake on hardest difficulty, third was without effort getting the "good" ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, the story was better then the other games i had played and the gameplay was engaging while keeping you on your toes plus hiding in the shadows with knives flying through the air with ultimate precision was a big entertainment factor.

I loved Metro 2033. The atmosphere was so thick and immersive... played through it 3 times.

It was certainly broken in parts thought. Those amoebas were a fucking farce and the shooting mechanics left a lot to be desired.

Still - loved it. Sure it's challenging and at times cheap but generally it's manageable if you take it slow and explore your options.

I enjoyed it but it was a lot more average than people made it out to be. In fact I can barely even remember most of it after just a couple weeks.

It just made me want to play STALKER or Fallout again.

Are you kidding with this? You played Stalker and thought Metro was hard?! I played metro on Ranger Hardcore, It's hard mode with no HUD, less bullets and less health, and I thought it was easier than Stalker on medium difficulty... I literally can't even comprehend how you can play through Stalker on any difficulty and have trouble with Metro.

Not to say I didn't like Metro, I actually thought it was the better game.

I played STALKER on veteran. I found it significantly easier, or at least significantly more enjoyable in how it presented its difficulty, than Metro 2033. I don't enjoy mastery through repetition in video games. It's one thing if you're learning to become an athlete or a chef, and you're acquiring a real skill with continual application that enriches your life. That's a kind of mastery through rote repetition I admire and appreciate. However, learning a level through repetition...the enemy spawns here, I need to heft and throw the knife like so...there's glass here...this guy turns his head at this moment...that's not remotely enriching in any way. Well, I guess it is for people who enjoy that sort of thing, but some people enjoy getting kicked in the balls too. It's a niche recreational pursuit.

Again, Metro doesn't make me feel like I'm fighting the enemies or inhabiting the world, it makes me feel like I'm fighting the UI and engine, and banging my head against the game's peculiarities. I'm seeing a few of the predictable "LOLOLOLOL U NEED MOAR SKILL" responses in this thread, and...yeah, sorry, no. I'm not the most skilled gamer around, but I've been gaming for 30 years, and I don't see this game as a genuine skill test. Getting to Diamond in SC2, that was a skill test. Trying to finish JA2 1.13 on ironman mode, that was a skill test. Metro 2033 isn't testing my skill, it's testing my patience. It's testing my ability to endure the tedium of figuring out why the game is behaving so oddly, because the game didn't feel the need to explain it to me. And that's fine, I can endure poorly put together games. Mount and Blade is fucking mess, but Mount and Blade lets me SAVE. It doesn't punish me for its failure to explain its shitty controls and weird engine quirks.

Alright, so. I bought this...thing...in the last Steam Sale. I bought it because of YOU GUYS. Over and over on these forums, I saw you bigging it up. "Oh, la la la la la, Metro 2033, I loves it I loves it, best game since STALKER, post nuclear fans rejoice, la la la la la." FALSE ADVERTISING, says I!
This was your warning, STALKER wasn't exactly great either.

You have THQ to blame for that. The dev's even admit the game was a "very rough diamond", and I'm inclined to agree, they just didn't have the time or resources to polish and tweak everything. When the game DOES work, like the developers intended it, flawed FPS mechanics and frustrating gameplay aside, it's fucking brilliant.

THQ has realised their fuckup however, and are giving the dev team a lot more time to polish up and are devoting more resources into it, an admittedly risky move for a company that could go under with one flop, but that shows how much faith they're putting into it.

I've never heard anyone on The Escapist say they like Brink.

Hell I like Brink but I know I'm in the %1 that did, seems like EVERYONE else, especially on the Escapist, hate the hell out of it.
