It was quite okay, I didn't have any high expectations. The ghost train part was fun.

To play devils advocate, it can ruin pacing and difficulty if you can just save after every hard bit and go back to that save after you die.
I've never really understood this particular argument in favor of checkpointing. If I reload a saved game, putting me back 10 seconds before the action stopped, I've destroyed the pacing, but if I'm forced to reload a checkpoint, putting me back 10 minutes before the action stopped, somehow the pacing is preserved? If anything decimates pacing, it's checkpoints.

I can understand the argument that checkpoints increase tension, but even that bleeds away for me during fussy segments and constant repetition. Both methods allow you unlimited retries at the same content, it's just one is a lot more convenient than the other and wastes a lot less of your time. If the part that is testing my skill is 3 minutes into the checkpoint, how is my challenge or tension greatly increased by having to complete the simple hallway running segments and ladder climbing segments leading up to it?

It's totally a way to make a short game feel artificially longer though, I'll give the developers that.

I enjoyed it despite it being linear as fck same for Singularity , I wish games were less linear and had more mechanic depth....

What did you hate about it? What were you expecting going in? I'm genuinely curious, because it sounds like you hate the game just as much as all my friends and I love it. I can see some people being bored with it, but hate? I'm confused.
I expected it to be a free-roaming shooter. Nothing too much more. And that's what it was... just the single most unbelievably crap one there is.I expected it to be somewhat like Fallout 3/New Vegas, but I knew it wasn't going to be exactly like it. Which is great because, I already own those two games, I don't need another one. But it was all of the tedium of those two titles with none of the fun.

Oh, where to begin..

*Exhibit A: Nothing to Do.

That says it all. There is NOTHING to do in Borderlands. The tutorial level was actually the most fun I had while playing. Know why? Because I wasn't yet aware that the entire game is the tutorial over and over. You just walk around and shoot stuff. Walk around and shoot stuff. Some other games are mostly walking around and shooting stuff, but still fun. Borderlands is not.

*Exhibit B: Every Quest is the Same.

Borderlands is an MMO with a maximum of four players. That is not fun. Every quest is an MMO quest. In fact, every quest I got in the game that wasn't "Talk to this guy for a new quest" always ended in some form of "0/5" or "0/25" or "0/3" or any other indication that the same deed had to be done several times. And what was the reward for the quests? More quests. To kill more Fill-in-the-Blanks.

*Exhibit C: Every Gun is the Same.

They tried too hard to add variety in Borderlands. They went so far with adding so many different kinds of guns, they hit an uncanny valley of sorts where every gun behaves almost identically, and just looks different. The weapon quality didn't seem to matter. Some of my Green items from the beginning were better than Purple ones I got later on. It was just a clusterfuck.

*Exhibit D: The Art Doesn't Work.

I never liked the way Borderlands looked. And when I heard that they made it cel-shaded last minute because their graphics engine was malfunctioning, I wasn't too surprised. I've seen videos of people who modded Borderlands to take out the cel-shading, and it really looks good. It doesn't look good the way it is now, though. Especially since they don't even have a color scheme.. everything is orange or grey.

*Exhibit E: It's Not Funny.

The sense of humor in Borderlands is poor. Many people who love it say it's hilarious. I really find it to be incredibly stale. The humans who say "funny" things are just trite or overly vulgar, and the claptraps are more annoying than Navi. I wasn't impressed with the writing.

Even after typing quite a bit I still feel there's more that I missed. It's just... the worst game I've played in a very, VERY long time. And yes, I have played it Co-op. It's not fun.

It might (key word: MIGHT) not be the absolute worst game I've ever played, but it is probably the most boring. Like I said, I'm infuriated that I even bought it for $7.

People in this thread are wrong.
So very, very wrong.

All I didn't like in the game was the fucking amoeba enemies near the end. People who got to that bit know what I'm on about.
Meh, those things were easy.... just stand back a bit.

I hated every single second when you had to fight other humans, not because of morality and shit, it was because gun-fights in 2033 are so bad it's painful. Seriously, a human can take 4 .44 revolver shots to the chest, and still run around and shoot at me..... right.

That being said, 2033 is one of my fav games of all times.

Just give me fighting the hordes of nosalisis and other tunnel dwellers any day, than having to take part in a shoot-out.

Ok, fair enough. I went in expecting Diablo 2 with guns, and that's exactly what I got. I can see a lot of those points just not meshing with your personal taste, but I found the constant movie references amusing (it set a tone for sure), and then some of the lines from Scooter were hysterical.

Ha! Someones been here a while.

Hmmm. Blaming everyone else here for your unfortunate game purchase, eh? :) Well soon everyone will probably beg for your forgiveness!

"I can see no other possible outcome." ;)
p.s. Never played this game.

(Guess quote get Escapist cookie! Hint: badges.)
I rarely blame other people for unfortunate purchases, Ijust blame the game's developer/publisher for my horrible purchase, or for making a sucky game... I think it works...

Also was that a Doomsday Arcade reference? God I want to watch those videos again...
Yep. That show was great! You get one Escapist cookie! (M&M cookie with all blue M&Ms. Turn the Ms sideways.)

Also, without developers&publishers there wouldn't be any games so blaming them for a game is alright.

Yeah. Although I've played Diablo 2, and I actually liked it. I thought it was fun and the atmosphere was great. Not so with Borderlands.

Oh and thank you for keeping the conversation in line with opinion. Instead of what most people do: assert their opinion as fact, assume I'm proposing a fact, then try to logically prove me wrong with the facts of their opinion.

That's not how it works, and I'm glad we silently came to that understanding xD

Don't thank me, it was all you. You have an opinion, and I expect to hear reasoning why you hold it. Just saying it's the worst game ever (or best game for that matter) is where these conversations go wrong, because I have it on at least 5 times the authority that is not true.

So thank you for expressing yourself rationally too. You quoted me while I was writing a response in another thread where I'm the one with the controversial opinion, and people aren't being quite so graceful. I include myself in the misconduct, but just like you, I'm explaining why I think things are bad, and all I've gotten back is "you're wrong!"

Haha oh dear, yeah these forums can be like that. A lot, in fact. That's why this conversation was refreshing ^^

Usually the only way out of a quote-fest like that is to simply not respond, but when I do that, the child in me is angry that I "Let them win." I don't like letting people have their petty victories xD

Also, you said "you and your friends" love it, and I know when playing with a group of people, the type of game that's enjoyable is very hard to predict. For example, I think on its own merits, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a clunky, awful game. But when I play it with my buddy, for some inexplicable reason it's hysterically fun.

So if Borderlands is as fun for your company as Vegas 2 is for mine, it'd be far from me to tell you you're not having a good time.

Ranger mode sucked, not having crosshairs or a HUD to try and make it more immersive isn't a bad idea. Removing crosshairs and forcing reliance on iron sights when many of the guns do not actually have iron sights is a terrible idea.

A nightmare on Ranger Hardcore.

OT: To each their own I guess, on higher difficulties then easy it becomes a stealth game (against humans) though. Only bad thing that could have been patched is the buggy filter system.

How would a complete user-defined save system, options for advanced graphics tweaking, and a more open world with more interactivity have harmed this game or in any way caused it to be worse than it is?
How does the lack of those things, which have persisted since a time when console gaming wasn't a major contributor to the PC market, actually automatically apply to consoles? Plus, you threw in the save issue, also not inherrently native to consoles.

It looks like the only grounds you have here are "these things suck and consoles suck so let's blame consoles!"

Blame the lowered standards of gamers and the laziness of developers. Consoles may not help, but they are not the root cause here. The only one that works is lack of graphical tweaking, and even then....

hmm, sounds to me you should have researched the game a bit more.

The games awesome, i especially like the whole "gasmask thing".

But the stealth is borderline broken, yes :L Just avoid enemies altogether in those parts is my advice.

I always felt lonely when I had something negative to say about Metro. You're right, "everyone" here seems to love it. You're righter in that the atmosphere works (brilliantly), but the game doesn't.
