I hate my internet connection, Help?

Generally you go to the router's configuration page. Login and there should be an option to change the lease time for all your connections. It will probably be setup for either hours of minutes, just put in a good time length, I use around 24 hours.

If this doesn't work or you can't figure it out let me know what brand & model router you have and I'll work on getting you an answer.

My parents computer, which is the one that manages the router, is broken and they are still waiting for one from Dell (I tried to convince them to let me build it for them and save some money). Anyway, I can't adjust it until they get their new one which isn't until the end of the month

Do a speed test on speedtest.net. If the numbers are low, then it's probably your internet provider. Also, are you using WiFi? WiFi always has lag because it has to refresh the connection every few minutes.

thats strange... i haven't noticed a bit of lag with my wifi. and i'm downstairs in the basement. granted i don't play top of the line games online...

thats strange... i haven't noticed a bit of lag with my wifi. and i'm downstairs in the basement. granted i don't play top of the line games online...

It is not caused by your internet provider, i had the problem where i lost connection every now and then and the youtube stuff, the fault was that i had connected the wires in my telephone jack wrong, you need to double check that you are in the first telephone jack and that the wires are exactly where they are meant to be.

Trust me, I did all that.

A suggestion in the above link talks about signal interference, try to see if your router can go to a 5GHz network instead of a 2.4GHz network. This will help when using the router around microwaves, cordless phones, etc. and may be what was wrong with the network all along.

Ok, thanks. A list of things that you can try:

- Make sure that your router has the newest firmware ( http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2334 )
- You can try a line test ( http://www.dslreports.com/linequality ) this has the ability to figure out where along the connection line the packets
are being lost.
- Another test ( http://www.dslreports.com/smokeping ) will test for 24 hours the latency on your connection
- You can attempt to switch to OpenDNS ( http://www.opendns.com ) this will route all of your DNS traffic through their servers, this is what I use, you can find detailed instructions for your router at ( https://www.opendns.com/start/device/netgear )
- Last test, which I doubt will do much, is another test from DSL Reports ( http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks ) which will detect your TCP settings and correct them. DO NOT USE THIS IF YOUR COMPUTER HAS VISTA ON IT

I'm having similar problems but for me I can play on my 360 seamlessly but when it comes to a bit of TF2 on my laptop It lags loads (even on lowest graphics) and makes it unplayable most of the time.

4Gb of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M G 256 MB
and I am running windows 7 32bit.

Also some one else posted a link to a gamebooster program and avast thought it was a virus so I didn't get it but if anyone knows for a fact that it isn't a virus please let me know!

Wireless is bad. No matter what.

I suffered with wireless for years with the exact same problems you describe, then I just bought an ethernet cable and ran it from my router to my computer. Now my connection is rock solid, and faster than it ever was with wireless.

At least your not on Dial Up like I am. :/
