Sorry bout another one of these threads guys, but I have quite specific problems... I've been playing on the PC, if that affects any opinions at all.

I hated Fallout 3. It was ugly, bleak, boring and I hated having to scrounge for ammo and food which was going to irradiate me anyway. I LOVE exploration in games, it was one of the reasons I bought Fallout, but it is literally all the bloody same. Ruined city, brown wasteland, stony wasteland, junkyard, ruined bridge. Not that I don't like empty and open landscapes, it was just so ugly (which, I understand, is the point).

I'm a hugely aesthetically driven guy, and from the videos I've seen Oblivion's landscape looks absolutely stunning, it's a kind of place I could spend countless hours exploring without ever going into a town. I had no inclination with Fallout to do so because it was so ugly. Also, I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but Oblivion looks like it has just the right amount of RPGness without getting too monotonous and boring. Am I right in this assumption?

Also, a lot of the creatures look ugly and bland, but I can get past that if I can wander alone for the most part, maybe stopping off to kill a wolf or goblin or two, or go fetch a certain kind of leaf for the local drug dealer for a handful of coins :)

Also, is the melee combat much like in Fallout? Because that was pretty bad, especially in first person. I do intend to play in third person for the most part :p

Please help!! :)

Also, I'm sorry, I have no idea how I posted this in Off Topic... Just carelessness on my part I guess.
In short

You'd hate oblivion
You'd love WoW

I'd suggest Morrowind because it's much vaster then oblivion, more open, and cost less...

Yeah, pretty much. Vertibirds are cool, but so are dragons. And calling down the wrath of hell on people. But, to each his own...
Hey, don't get me wrong. I love fantasy, but I was hit with cyberpunk elements first. Tron, Knight Rider, The Black Hole, and so on. Who wouldn't want a vehicle like the one Section 9 uses?
You should play System Shock 2 then (think Bioshock, only better, cyberpunk not steampunk, and not so good graphics [being MUCH MUCH OLDER])

I know of it. I should actually play all of those shocks at some point.

If you're bothered by art style and artistic quality that much then you may want to stick to JRPGs and not bother with the Elder Scroll series. I played Fallout 3 on the 360 and the horrible graphics and landscapes were enough to make me want to cough up blood. I've never quite figured out why that game is considered such a masterpiece. I'd avoid the WRPG market if you're looking for good art direction.

SS1 I'd skip... it wasn't that good; it was original (and confusing how the people would yell about killing you then ask you to kill them before killing themselves... not always in that order) but not that good, SS2 was where it was at (plus- SS1 is by near impossible to find... and SS2 is freaking expensive)

Everything you don't like about Fallout 3 is definately in Oblivion, except tenfold.
The battle system is fucking atrocious... You thought Fallout 3 was difficult and awkward?
Oblivion really is just a broken game in every sens of the word.
The combat system in Two Worlds was better than it seriously... I'm not even exaggerating.

If you don't like Oblivion then you can get the Nehrim mod, so you might as well try it.

You might like it. The combat is not much better (worse, since no VATS) and it feels unpolished, but in other ways it is far superior. It has a more variety, but worse immersion.

Buy it anyway. It's 5 bucks at Gamestop.

The user interface is almost literally the same, but the world not being post apocalyptic is indeed more colourful, you'll get your traveller's itch scratched and melee combat is much more satisfying with a sword and shield than anything fallout 3 throws up. I had alot of fun with Oblivion and I think it's worth the price of admission.

My only reservation might be to say that Oblivion did rely quite heavily on cloned sections for many of the dungeons, for example there's a particular "corner" room which I could instantly recognise in every cave I visited no matter how many small adjustments were made to disguise it.

Try Morrowind or Daggerfall (with the shit modded out of it), I hear there's a mod updating Daggerfall's graphics to Morrowind's, and soon there will be one that upgrades it to Oblivion's. If Morrowind doesn't already have that, it probably will when the Daggerfall graphics update is released.

Morrowind's environment is completely amazing. Daggerfall's environment is randomly generated.

You choose!

Just get the game of the year addition so you can experience the most awesome expansion pack in the history of ever: The Shivering Isles.

Otherwise, Oblivion is more or less Fallout 3 with a way better looking environment. Here are some other differences (Note: I didn't bother to read many of the responses in this thread):

-Bows instead of guns, so just imagine the bullets in Fallout 3 having an arch when you shoot them
-No VATS, so in a way it has a bit more realism and definitely more immersion
-Also magic spells instead of guns which can do so many more fun things like light up a room, summon a zombie, open a locked chest, make people like you more, after you set them on fire. Best of all, you can custom make your own spells and enchanted gear
-The leveling system is alot different and can be easily exploited. The more you do stuff, the better at that thing you become. So by the end of the game you can leap over small houses and out run most enemies. You pick a couple major skills and when you get better at those enough you level. The exploitation part comes in when you pick what stat you want to increase because how much you can increase it by is directly related to related skills you got better at.
-Waiting actually fully fills your Health, Mana, and Endurance. You'll do this alot.
-Not only can you run faster and jump higher than you do in Fallout 3, but you can also jump on a horse. Travel in Oblivion is not only more enjoyable, but it's also way easier.

All in all, despite the obvious similarities they are quite different. If you didn't enjoy Fallout 3, like I did... didn't... um, I like Oblivion more, then you might really enjoy Oblivion.

Did I mention the Shivering Isles?

Get New Vegas, slap on the HD mods, body mods, and the Landscape mod. You can actually use the iron sights properly now, especially if you add an auto-aim tweak/removal. Combined with the less epic but much more interesting storyline, and the many, many more side quests and it's a much better game.
What he said.

It has horses too?! That's great!

As I said, I am really looking for a large world to explore and get lost in, with nothing except for a sword, some armour and a few apples to keep me going :)

The way you have described it sounds great, and it IS only $30 AUD from EB Games... I think I'm going to give it a try, but more opinions would be great :)
Maybe it was becouse I was quite unexperienced in games then, but Oblivion was really hard for me. I think I didn't even level up without using cheats. There is a mod for removing the monsters leveling up with you though (I didn't try it). And if my memories can be trusted then you can't just run around on level 1 with a couple of apples. Fallout 3 was alot easier when it came out.

Oh and in Oblivion you can be a vampire. Awesome.

EDIT:
JayDeth said:
What he said and Shivering Isles also gives a choice between some houses (I remember two: a wizard's tower and a vampire hideout). They are free, but it get's really awesome when you can afford to buy all the additions.

You approached everything in fallout from a close minded point of view, because now you have missed everything that makes it so special. You can go play through the entire Just Cause 2 world, and find that while it is diverse and open, it is completely missing any moral ties or individuality. It is just another large sandbox. Where Bethesda has created so much life from a nuclear wasteland and square could not do the same with a leaving, breathing made up island in asia. Fallout 3 is extremely barren and empty, only having 2 functioning cities, and if you play through the game you begin to discover so much life beyond what you would see going through the main story. And this is where I think New Vegas failed, that it is taking what made fallout 3 great, and overloading you with too much of it. Just like in Assassins creed 2 where they took what people liked about the first game, and over emphasized it to the point where there was just too much. In Assassins creed 1 the assassinations where way too far spaced out, and it was too boring for most people. In number 2 they filled the game with that, and made the cities a little more lively, and gave the game a little more depth and it was a great game, but it would have been better without all of that stuff. Anyway, back on topic. Go play fallout 3 about 7 more times then come back and try to say the same thing. It WILL NOT be so easy.

Also play point lookout before you say anything about fallout 3. That addon alone had more story then Call of Duty and Halo combined

Ahhh, I've never been a big fan of the anime style... I mean some things, such as some elements of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts can look quite beautiful. And yeah, I'm going into Oblivion expecting the art direction to be tasteless and uninspired, but you can't have everything :\

I really just want a world to explore.

Thanks for all your opinions, advice and help guys. I think I'll give it a shot. And hey, if I don't like it I can just return it :)
