I hated Fallout 3. It was ugly, bleak, boring and I hated having to scrounge for ammo and food which was going to irradiate me anyway. I LOVE exploration in games, it was one of the reasons I bought Fallout, but it is literally all the bloody same. Ruined city, brown wasteland, stony wasteland, junkyard, ruined bridge. Not that I don't like empty and open landscapes, it was just so ugly (which, I understand, is the point).
I'm a hugely aesthetically driven guy, and from the videos I've seen Oblivion's landscape looks absolutely stunning, it's a kind of place I could spend countless hours exploring without ever going into a town. I had no inclination with Fallout to do so because it was so ugly. Also, I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but Oblivion looks like it has just the right amount of RPGness without getting too monotonous and boring. Am I right in this assumption?
Also, a lot of the creatures look ugly and bland, but I can get past that if I can wander alone for the most part, maybe stopping off to kill a wolf or goblin or two, or go fetch a certain kind of leaf for the local drug dealer for a handful of coins
Also, is the melee combat much like in Fallout? Because that was pretty bad, especially in first person. I do intend to play in third person for the most part
Please help!!
Also, I'm sorry, I have no idea how I posted this in Off Topic... Just carelessness on my part I guess.
You should play System Shock 2 then (think Bioshock, only better, cyberpunk not steampunk, and not so good graphics [being MUCH MUCH OLDER])FalloutJack said:Hey, don't get me wrong. I love fantasy, but I was hit with cyberpunk elements first. Tron, Knight Rider, The Black Hole, and so on. I know of it. I should actually play all of those shocks at some point.WOPR said:You should play System Shock 2 then (think Bioshock, only better, cyberpunk not steampunk, and not so good graphics [being MUCH MUCH OLDER])FalloutJack said:Hey, don't get me wrong. If you're bothered by art style and artistic quality that much then you may want to stick to JRPGs and not bother with the Elder Scroll series. I played Fallout 3 on the 360 and the horrible graphics and landscapes were enough to make me want to cough up blood. I've never quite figured out why that game is considered such a masterpiece. I'd avoid the WRPG market if you're looking for good art direction.Digi7 said:Sorry bout another one of these threads guys, but I have quite specific problems... SS1 I'd skip... it wasn't that good; it was original (and confusing how the people would yell about killing you then ask you to kill them before killing themselves... not always in that order) but not that good, SS2 was where it was at (plus- SS1 is by near impossible to find... and SS2 is freaking expensive)FalloutJack said:I know of it. Everything you don't like about Fallout 3 is definately in Oblivion, except tenfold.Digi7 said:Sorry bout another one of these threads guys, but I have quite specific problems... I've been playing on the PC, if that affects any opinions at all.

What he said.ravenshrike said:Get New Vegas, slap on the HD mods, body mods, and the Landscape mod. You can actually use the iron sights properly now, especially if you add an auto-aim tweak/removal. Combined with the less epic but much more interesting storyline, and the many, many more side quests and it's a much better game.
Maybe it was becouse I was quite unexperienced in games then, but Oblivion was really hard for me. I think I didn't even level up without using cheats. There is a mod for removing the monsters leveling up with you though (I didn't try it). And if my memories can be trusted then you can't just run around on level 1 with a couple of apples. Fallout 3 was alot easier when it came out.Digi7 said:It has horses too?! That's great!
As I said, I am really looking for a large world to explore and get lost in, with nothing except for a sword, some armour and a few apples to keep me going
The way you have described it sounds great, and it IS only $30 AUD from EB Games... I think I'm going to give it a try, but more opinions would be great![]()
What he said and Shivering Isles also gives a choice between some houses (I remember two: a wizard's tower and a vampire hideout). They are free, but it get's really awesome when you can afford to buy all the additions.JayDeth said:snip
Ahhh, I've never been a big fan of the anime style... I mean some things, such as some elements of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts can look quite beautiful. And yeah, I'm going into Oblivion expecting the art direction to be tasteless and uninspired, but you can't have everything :\Sakurazaki1023 said:If you're bothered by art style and artistic quality that much then you may want to stick to JRPGs and not bother with the Elder Scroll series.
