recently my dad approached me and gave me a case contained a very old Italian revolver...now here's the choice....the revolver is in pretty bad condition and would be very hard to clean up and make usable again. on the other hand i could sell it for quite a bit and buy a new revolver...i like the Italian model but i don't want a gun the does not function and is unusable in my pistol collection. i welcome your suggestions.

How old we talking? It sounds to me like it might be worth keeping, especially if its from your dad (hey, I'm sentimental).

If you actually want to use a gun, buy a new one. Why not keep the old one and save your pennies, a new pistol can't be that expensive surely.

Depends if your going to go around shooting people.

If it was me i would clean and restore the old gun. And then just look at it. I wouldnt use it... Maybe once or twice at a target range...

How important was the gun to your dad? Is it somesort of eirloom or did he just find it somewhere and figured you'd like it?

Anyway, might wanna at least try and patch it up. If that doesn't work you can always sell it afterwards

to all those who have responded let me take those in the order they were asked. deadman: roughly 20 years give or take, and thats kinda why im leaning towards fixing it up...sentimental fool that i am. bonsaik: when i buy a gun i make sure its the best, and i have the oportunity to make this gun pretty good...i think. also look into furbuts answer for the second part to your question. furburt: all i know is it is a 22. calibur, as for brand ive found the makers name on the gun but the internet has failed to find the maker which leads me to believe it could no linger exist thus making this gun potentially very rare and valuable

Well, two things are behind the notion of "keep it:"
1. The sentiment. Your father gave it to you, after all.
2. You would probably get significantly less if it was in an un-firing state. That determines a lot as far as price-range goes.

Restore it, and if you do plan to sell it at a later date, you will get quite a bit more.

Keep as long as possible... collectibles always go up in price the longer they are kept in good condition.

Could be a nice nest egg for the future :)

An old Tanfoglio? The gun club I'm in is trying to get rid of one now, and not getting any buyers. Due to our gun laws, that means it will probably get sent to destruction.

Which means that in another 20 years, yours will be valuable.

I would say keep it. It is a gift from your dad; hold onto it for now, even if you never restore it to working order.

Dude you're 19 what are you doing with a gun collection anyway o_O

I would just keep it since your dad gave it to you since you seem to have other guns anyway.
