All Pokemon games are virtually the same, so I recommend you just get the newest one so you won't have to pay for an antiquated game and handheld. If you're willing to pay the price for minimal headache, however, get Red or Blue.

I would get Yellow, but they're not easy to find so you should get Platinum. It's the newest one and it's a whole lot of fun.
Plus the colours on yellow begin to hurt your soul after a few hours.
Plus the fact that in order to beat your first gym you have to go out and level a bug you have to find and level in the forest, with the only problem being once they evolve theyre worthless to you as a cocoon in the interim to being a bad Motha to fight agenst.

Red or Blue.
Easiest and best, in my opinion.
Gold and silver were good, after you beat the game the first time you could go to the first region and explore that to.

I'm playing fire red at the moment (3rd playthtough) and find it easy to get into, but still harder than red/blue since they beefed up some boss battles (ie misty who kicks your ass around if you didnt pick bulbasaur). But yeah great for content and length and has all good features that have been added

hmm methinks I started something. It's nice to see opinions, and know they made some really good games.

What's Leafgrean? Is that like Red and Blue, but newer?
Essentially. In Japan, the original generation 1 games were Red and Green, not Red and Blue. Blue came out later in Japan that fixed glitches and improved little on some things, and that's the engine our Red and Blue got.
I assume they made it Red and Green to reflect that, though it's confusing because we didn't get Green originally.

Yeah, but getting a GameBoy can be a pain, I would recommend getting Fire Red/ Leaf Green, as you can play them on the DS, along with the majority of Pokemon games. Alternatively you could try and get a GameBoy advance to play the originals.

In my opinion i think you should purchase Gold. It has to be one of my all time favourite games, and it will take alot longer to complete compared to pokemon Red & Blue, so you will definitely get value for money.

In terms of gameplay, you can basically go for any of them, since they're the same game with a new but ultimately minor gimmick each time. In terms of graphics, go for one of the newer ones, like Diamond or Pearl. Unless you like pixels, in which case go retro with Red/Blue! If it's grind you're worried about, I still think you could pick any of them. I have never felt compelled to 'catch 'em all', whether there were 150 or, what is it, 400-something now? You just catch and train what you like and start a new game when you get bored.
Sorry to be confusing - basically I would go with Diamond/Pearl becuase it's the same game with better graphics and more choice (sort of) when it comes to the Pokemon you can catch and train. =)

Gold/Silver were the best imo... they had the introduction of the day/night cycle, AND the game world was huge since they brought back the one from red/blue/yellow. You could cycle through Johto and Kanto regions. so even though you "beat the game" you still had an entire other world to explore!
