Ooh, I have an idea. Try playing one of the Hitman games until you're cured. I believe you only get 7 saves per level on the easiest difficulty and you get even less on higher difficulties, and I don't even think any saves are allowed on the highest one. Plus it takes FOREVER to save and load as it is.

I look at this thread and think, okay, that person quicksaves constantly. Who can be surprised? They're probably conditioned by playing a lot of terribly-balanced games where they're killed every 20 seconds. What a perfectly reasonable habit to cultivate.

However, if it ruins the immersion for you, you could probably break the habit by never quickloading. Manual loads of older save points only. Eventually, you'll stop quicksaving because it doesn't produce a positive result besides having to wait for it to finish saving.

Be forewarned, you'll probably come to the realization of just how terrible these games you've been playing are, where the developer has heavily leaned on quicksaving to overcome their awful design.

I do quicksave obsessively but not to do gunfights perfectly

Otherwise, I'm the same way, but I go in and delete my less recent saves when my memory gets full, I find this habit sometimes saves my life

Then again it sounds like you have prominent OCD, while I only have a minor issue with doing things over and over

I have a problem. I use Vista and Firefox and I can't download anything. Kernels and cookies are okie doke, but direct files; exes, mp3s, you name it.
Files will download fine and say they're done but dissapear once completed. Like, into no where.

i think that a great way to quit quick saving is to get a timer set it to 5 min and save when it rings reset and repeat. also you can gradualy extent the time untill you dont need to save at all.

To quit quicksaving, go into the keyboard map and remove the hotkey.

That's because you're downloading them into the temp folder. If you're a sarcastic windows-hater, like you seem to be, it's not just Vista. Same thing on XP. And it's not a problem, it's actually a useful feature to keep crap from piling up in your system. If you're really having this problem, though, just remember to save them, not open them.

Would you be playing games on the highest difficultly setting perchance? Because that'll do it. Try it on a little easier, build up confidence, all that kinda stuff.

That's been happening to me too. Check that you're saving to disc as opposed to just opening it.

If that's not it, I got no idea.

Try replaying some sections of games you've already beaten or passed, where the paranoia of imminent death doesn't really matter. Work your way forward through the game until you're playing in new territory; you should be able to wean yourself off the habit. My cousin is exactly the same way; it took xbox support to explain that having 300 save files on oblivion was slowing his console down.

@tomoe
I had that problem for a while. I think the best way to do it is compare the time spent to other things. Take a console game, like shadow of the colossus, which delivers an amazing artistic experience and enhances your understanding of videogames. then compare: in that same fifteen hours, what would you have done online? gotten a new pair of gloves or a cooler hat?
also, add up the amount you've spent on online games in the past year, or two, or three, and think of something you could buy with that money instead.
all else fails, see if you can find the article on here about the guy deleting his world of warcraft character. food for thought.

As somebody has suggested already, play games that don't use quicksave - Far Cry perhaps, or Devil May Cry 4, something like that - or maybe try playing games on a lower difficulty, just go on a rampage and slaughter everything in your path (in the game I mean, not a real world solution sadly).

As far as the Vista thing goes, it may be connected to the way Vista 'protects' certain areas of the operating system, particularly if you are using third party software for downloading (eg torrents). It might be worth looking in the virtual store, which should be located somewhere like -

Root Drive -> users -> username -> appdata -> local -> virtual store (you need to make sure you can see hidden files in your options).

Other than that, try using the advanced search feature, making sure the search includes hidden and system files. Vista is probably sticking stuff in some obscure hidden folder, all the time telling you it's being saved to documents.

Don't cut it back. Just stop. Never quicksave. Try and go through an entire level without it. As long as you can keep this up, you might kick it.
Or we do things the hard way. Y'see, it's a lot harder to quicksave when you're too busy thinking about the wolverine in ya' pantry...
When I read that, I automatically thought of the Xmen Wolverine, not the animal. That would make it much more frightning. Anytime you try and quicksave: *Shnk*
I'd rather face off with the X-Men Wolverine. At least he probably won't eat your corpse. And your clothes. And your computer.
