I have a question for you.

Recently, while having a conversation with a friend of mine, we somehow got on the subject of stealing money from a Church. (we were joking around, so I don't remember how we got on that subject)
After we were done joking around, my friend said this. "Seriously though,stealing from a church is horrible, worse than rape even." Which caught me off guard. Both of those things are horrible, don't get me wrong. But to say stealing is worse than rape? You can't even compare the two, money is just money. However, rape would involve hurting someone, both emotionally, and physically.

So, my question is this. Have you ever had a friend, whom you've known for the longest time, say something that completely caught you off guard? Something that you thought personally, your friend would never say? Something that made you think "Maybe I don't know my friend as well as I thought I did."
Also, me saying that rape is worse then stealing is purely my own opinion, I do feel very strongly about it, but that doesn't change the fact its just my opinion.
If a thread like this has been done recently, I apologize, I searched, but didn't find anything similar.

I had something. Me and about 4 other mates were all talking about what would we do if we could do it before we die (mainly the bad stuff) so there were the usuals like rob a bank, joy rides, kill someone. Then my fat friend said quite loudly:

"I would rob a pick and mix shop!"

We all kind of just stared at him. If that's what floats his boat then go ahead but we did not know how to respond to that.

EDIT: and I think rape is probably most definately worse.

Well I fully advocate stealing money from churches, but playing devils advocate (see what i did there?) I can see how hypothetically stealing money from churches can be considered worse than rape.

Consider that Ideally churches use the money that they take in to do good and virtuous work such as homeless shelters, orphanages, feeding those in need, battered womens shelters, Alcohol/narcotics anon programs, Individual family tragedy assistance, etc.

So by stealing money from a church its equivilent to raping a community because you are literally screwing people who are in desperate need of the assistance from the church, which without the funds, the church cannot do

I'M super religious, and I think your friend was being a bit stupid. A church is, by Christian standards, a bunch of people coming to together to serve Christ, so stealing from a church is really just stealing from a bunch of people who, as Judgment101 pointed out, claim that money is the root of all evil anyways.

OT: I've never had a circumstance quite like yours, but I have had tons of friends who assume that I know exactly what's going on in their lives at any given point in time. Being an atheist on good days and an agnostic on the bad ones, I don't care what happens to a church or any other kind of temple.
Concerning the question though, In my opinion, without wanting to be overly unfair to your friend, he is a complete moron. Rape is, as numerous people have stated before, hurting someone both physically and mentally, whereas stealing, especially from something as impersonal as a church is just that, stealing. In the latter no one gets hurt physically and it was just an organisation for people who still need an unseen father figure to get through the day. (just to clarify, I am not trying to get the religious people worked up with this statement, it is simply what I believe and if they are right I will pay the price for my heretic mind in due time, but I doubt it)
Talking about friends that reveal stuff that you did not expect, yes that happens all the time, kind of natural if you ask me, just have to re-evaluate them after things like that.

Nope. Though I do think Rape is worse because it hurts someone now where as stealing from a church hurts people eventually when the church runs low on funds. Though stealing from a church does potentially cause hardship to more people... hum.
