Starts with curiosity, continues with experimentation and before you know it, a s & m fetichist is born >:)

On the sub the mask is a dehumaniser. Also; if it blocks eyesight it is about control through sensory deprivation, if it has a mouth zip it is about control through not allowing them to speak.

They can be worn by the dom too. As something to unnerve the sub, they can't see who the person dominating them is. Another reason for the dom to wear a mask is to seperate him/her from his/her actions because they are not something s/he'd do "normally".

For both, the mask can help them feel anonymous and more comfortable doing the things they want to that society has told them they shouldn't.

Heh. I clicked this thread solely to see how bizarre the question would be.

You did not disappoint.

As for the actual question... dunno. If I had to guess I'd say it's a combination of dehumanization and disassociation (yay, big words).

*shrug*

People sure do get off on some strange stuff. Personally I always thought those outfits just looked kind of ridiculous.

Its to do with sensory deprevation mate ;) I'm not into this whole thing but for example if you cut out all light and sound but your fully awake you often have colourful hallucinations or audio halucinations. I would imagine it has something to do with that.

Also a trust thing you are not able to see or speak and are completely at the whim of the person in control.
This is the main Reason for it right here, it heightens other senses not being able to use sight or sound, also it adds suspense as it's impossible to tell what your partner is preparing to do to you next. I suppose other people also enjoy the look of it same as some people enjoy schoolgirl outfits.

while your girlfriend who's peering in the fridge asks what you think would be the best lubricant between yoghurt, oil, ice cubes or possibly salad cream...
Answer: ginger or hot pepper sauce. Doh.
you don't give crime shows anything less than absolute mainstream to deal with, in fact I feel that with alot of thease shows anything different gets sneered at by the main charachters

Just gonna point out the masks aren't always apart of it. BDSM can be broken down into like hundreds of different subcategories.

Anyhow

Sensory deprivation...the complete surrendering of any control of what happens to your body without the ability to prepare for what you feel. You give up complete control to another person. Vulnerability and control is a wonderful thing if you can trust whose in control. Plus so experiment with fear play or pushing people past limits beyond sexuality. A submissive may have a fear or a resistance to trust and its a way to force confrontation with that fear with someone trusted nearby.

Er...I'll be in my lady bunk >.>

Sensory deprivation...you can't see so the other senses take over, with the desired effect being that touch becomes a stronger sense, like you can feel what is being done with your body much more acutely.

Somewhat related story.

So I was at this graduation party at this girl's house, and I see this business card with this buff dude on it in a leather harness. So I ask her about it (because I'm like "wtf? what is she into?"), but apparently it's the business card of her (married) karate instructor. I can't help but wonder if he does get the implication behind leather harnesses...
