I thought the Source engine had aged really well in Half-Life 2 when I played it, actually. And besides, they're supposed to be working on a new engine now (GoldSrc or something OK, I get it, GoldSrc was the original Half-Life engine, you don't need to keep telling me).

You I can say a lot of things about Valve (or more specifically, their games... well, alright, just HL2), but calling them lazy is a bit of a stretch. They've got 3.5 different IPs going at once (Portal being in the same universe as Half-Life) - and their release schedule is quite good, to be honest. Half-Life 3 (it is probably a full game, rather than an episode by now) has only taken 3 years so far. That's honestly not long at all, Duke Nukem Forever took literally 4 times that long. And in the meantime (and beforehand), they've released other games frequently, and are soon going to release another (Portal 2). Valve work hard for their fans, to me it sounds like you're just being ungrateful.

Dont fix what isn't broke... the source engine is divine power in computer format. so a new engine would make many fanboys said.
The TF2 updates are free and it shows that developers do care about players (heard that Ubisoft?).
The only line in your post I agree with is that it is time for a new game in the half life series.

I still think Valve is one of my favorite developers. The only thing from Valve I haven't liked was Counter Strike. Other than that all of their stuff is gold and as long as they keep making the games to the same high standard they can release whatever they want, whenever they want.

I love Valve. If you dislike 'em, then don't play their games.

I started to despise Vulva the day they announced L4D2, instead of the promised continuous support for L4D.
But they've continued to support L4D. Since L4D2 was announced, we've gotten various updates and the Crash Course and The Sacrifice campaigns.

Receiving more Portal is a lot like receiving more bacon given to you by a supermodel carrying a blank check made out to you.

Sure, it's more of the same. BUT I'M TOTALLY OKAY WITH THAT.

Just a troll - move along people. Really, though. Portal 2 will be running on an updated version of the Source engine. I assume you haven't seen any screenshots or moved your lazy arse to read any of the updates. Please get your facts right before you spew that bullshit around here.
Since when is having an opinion being a troll?

Just because i shared an opinion that you didn't agree with, doesn't mean i'm a troll.

Well your post basically amounts to a bunch of whining with little basis in reality.

I have an idea, let's complain about it more! That will surely make the game come out faster >.>

People like you are more annoying than the fact that Episode 3 isn't out.

They're still making games. I'm happy with them.

Hey guys, this company, on whose products I've spent a fair deal of money for a greater amount of enjoyment with numerous franchises which have coloured my formative years and led me to more of the same enjoyment, didn't continue to spoonfeed me constantly!

This is an outrage! They're trying to please someone other than me: this is tantamount to adultery! How dare they make other things that other people like and remain enigmatic about upcoming releases to prevent false hopes! How dare they!

OT: If Half Life was as unfulfilling as you claim ("There should have been no "episodes" in the first place for HL2, and they should have all come out in the same year considering around five minutes were put into each section."), then you wouldn't give a rat's ass about the time taken to release Episode Three.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

and here i thought the source engine looked great.
It was the best looking engine out there when Half life 2 was released, but as much of a fan as I am, I do think it's starting to look a bit dated now. L4D 2 was one ugly ass game.

When was the last time Valve [http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meanwhile.jpg] announced a completely new series? L4D...how long ago was it?

Now they just announced Portal 2...or should I say Portal: More of the Same."

I mean, at least they could have it on a new engine, but NO!

They have used the same engine for an entire decade.

WOW!

Not to mention they have completely forgotten their best franchise! Hey guys! Remember Dr. Freeman! You know, the whole of Earth and stuff!

There should have been no "episodes" in the first place for HL2, and they should have all come out in the same year considering around five minutes were put into each section.

They are the perfect example of a lazy company, stop using the nasty Source engine, and get their engineers to make something that doesn't have Gamecube graphics.

I give up. I can't be pacified with TF2 updates forever. If Valve doesn't announce Episode 3, or HL3 running on a new engine soon I'm just done with them as a developer.

Actually I think they were done with Ep. 3 a long time ago, Gabe just ate it.

What do you think about the company?
To answer your statements;

1. Two years ago. As in, very recently.

2. Portal was a critically acclaimed game, and now they're making a sequel to it. Not only that, but it has co-op and is said to be significantly bigger. What's the problem with that exactly?

3. But they keep updating the engine on a regular basis. The Source engine now and the Source engine from 10 years ago are almost completely different.

4. I'll give you that one. It's time they released Episode 3.

5. Both episodes combined are about 8 hours in length, not 10 minutes. And making the episodes works a hell of a lot better than a sequel. It's shorter, it costs less but the quality is still high.

6. They're not really lazy, considering how they've personally developed 10 games (or there about) over 14 years. As well as an amazing game engine. Also, these are Gamecube graphics;

And these are Source engine graphics;

You need your eyes checked.

Any questions?

You're greatly underestimating the risks and complications involved in making a new engine/IP. You're also overlooking the significant amount of support Valve has and still is giving to it's community.

I can understand being annoyed by the apparent disregard for the Half Life series, I too would much rather hear news on that front than any other Valve sequel, but your arguments are fairly baseless.

As far as big developers go, Valve is among the best. Condemning them because they haven't released the game you want yet is not a great reason.

EDIT:

also graphics are not and should never be important.
Personally, I couldn't disagree more with this statement here but it's not worth arguing about.

@OP
Anything I say would be reiterating what everyone else has responded with, but Valve truly is one of my favorite companies. Sure, the Source engine is showing its age but it still runs like a dream and it gets the job done. I'm hard-pressed to complain about that.

On top of that, I have never seen them release a bad or buggy game, ever. That's an astonishing achievement in its own right. They can take all the time they want.

At least when they do get round to releasing games their of a good standard. Way too often now games are released that are either really boring and a clone of something else or are too buggy to play. So what would you prefer, an unplayable buggy crap game or the usual valve quality even though it takes half a century to get to us?
