Exactly. Y'know, this is why I kinda believe that we have the cure for aids and cancer, but they don't want to distribute it. Where would all of those hospital bills go?

As for weed not being legalized is probably because of the social stigma assigned to it, and the fact that we've been fighting this "drug war" for so long, that backing out now would just further show our lack of commitment on things. People would cry out "What next?"

Marijuana won't be legal in the States until the government learns how to control the flow. I'm happy my country is a little more lenient though as small amounts marijuana up here in the sunny beaches of Canada is legal if you follow a ridiculous amount of guidelines and rules.

Go BC! Leading the charge for legalizing weed. It'll probably be pretty damn long before that spills over here to the East coast (NS), but don't give up.

I don't care for drugs, never have and never will. I have seen it used as a gateway drug way too many times to even think about that not being a reason for its illegality. As for your points...

1) It will affect me if you are someone I know. I've lost many friendships over it and even a family member.

2) Who says this? People say alcohol is great too, but I don't drink either.

Well, You have some points, but thats your opinion. As for your points:

1. I guess thats true, if that is who you are.

2. Actually, the feeling of right you get usually enhances the feel-good sensation of the things you do.

The only reason why alcohol is legal whilst weed isn't is because society has a long running cultural tradition of embibing alcohol which goes back centuries (millenia, in some parts). Without that tradition, alcohol would be regarded as yet another lethal drug; probably on the same tier as barbiturates.

There was Nancy Reagan's "just say no" anti drug campaign. It did a good job of painting marijuana as a lot worse than it actually was. A lot of people also associate marijuana as the gateway drug to things like meth or cocaine.

i really could care less if it is legal or not, i just wish that the pot supporters would actually do something about it, or shut up.

Seems to me the only reason it'd be seen as a gateway drug is because it's illegal, ironically. People try it, see how harmless it is, and wonder what else have they been lied to about. I've seen much, much worse things with alcohol, weed just seems to make people stupid for a while, alcohol can be truly dangerous. Not that weed isn't without it's risks, but if the money spent on enforcing it was used was used on education (truthfully) of it's effects then I'm all for it. It's a complete double standard as long as alcohol is legal, it's much worse, both short and long term.

I'm pretty sure it does come down to propoganda. William Randolph Hearst printed much of it because he was so heavily invested in the newspaper and timber industries, and hemp was seen as a miraculous new material, and he didn't want to spend millions converting to hemp based paper, or even have it as competition. Printing lies allowed his businesses to flourish(lies sell newspapers)and also destroyed the competition.
