The second I saw this thread my first thought was "Yeah, but neither was FF7 and people keep insisting it is the best JRPG ever, regardless of how much you grind their faces into the painfully obvious."
At least insofar as something like Zelda or Mario is concerned, every couple of games you suddenly get "greatest game ever" as the tagline people like to stick next to one of the titles. Particularly Mario 64 and Zelda 64 (yes, I'm aware of the irony).
However, I sincerely doubt that Nintendo is paying for the reviews, as others have said. They're not exactly the developers of Kane & Lynch, which was the only game I think that seriously paid for its reviews (although a few other games come to mind). The only time you could really call Nintendo overly biased for their own products was back in the heyday of the original Nintendo Power, but anyone who actually read it since the inception (like myself) would have noticed that just as many games got low scores as got good ones. Granted most of the great scores came from Nintendo's own first party games, but back in the day they actually did make great games.
Will Skyward Sword be the "best game ever"? Probably not, because in my mind the best Zelda game ever would be the one I started writing up details/a script for years ago. But that's not very realistic either.
I will, of course, be hopeful that it'll be good and that Nintendo will have learned from past mistakes, but this IS Nintendo we're talking about, and much like a lot of developers these days, don't seem to be keeping up. We'll just have to wait and see.
