When this show first got announced, I decided to give it a try. I saw the title and thought that regardless of the content, it could be an interesting watch. The first episode was awful and maintained my attention for a whole 10 seconds.
I've read through the comments on previous episodes and decided to watch this episode today to see if it was as bad as I remember. My feelings on the series is quite mixed now. I'm not one for heavily flaming, especially when the creators will read the comments.
First of all, I appreciate the fact that this is essentially you guys playing a game and us watching. The problem is that you're putting over something that should be entertaining. What I felt for this episode was a great sense of detachment. The sort of sense that says "I understand what's happening, but I'm not feeling it because I'm just watching it rather than participate". The problem is that you need a hook. Even if it's fabricated, throwing in some between character drama or something like that, something that takes away from the story telling and dice rolling, a breaking of the 4th wall, so to speak. What you have currently would support this. If you wanted full immersion of the fantasy world, animation would be far more interesting. As your current filming goes, you'd do far better to expand on things beyond the dungeons and dice. The guys in the back really do break things up with that disinterested comic book reading, just saying.
To roll in some more criticism, I feel as though I'm watching something that someone's friend uploaded on youtube. The sort of video where the uploader and their friend thinks its hilarious and the camera shakes as both people are in hysterics. To the people in the video, it's brilliant. To people watching, it's bland. Fleshing out the episodes might be the only way to do this and with your current shows lasting 9 minutes, this might turn more into a television series sort of show in terms of length. By all means, enjoy the game, but slaphanded editing (which I still felt the pinch of a bit in this episode) makes things difficult to follow. You might have to view the footage over once it's all captured and then re-enact some of the scenes to make it more polished and flow better for the viewer.
But that's just my take on it. I'm not a fan and I don't feel immersed by the fantasy, but I'm wise enough to not roll in just saying it's shit. If there is a foreseeable end to this game and another game was started, if my criticism was taken on board and the videos were fleshed out enough, you'd earn yourself another viewer. As the argument goes, quality over quantity, I'd much rather see shorter but more fleshed out videos on a weekly basis or longer, almost television episodic videos on a fortnightly/monthly basis. But maybe this is me and I'm not cut out for this DnD thing. The concept seems fine, entertaining even, but the execution is just not as I'd like. I'll be keeping an eye on this series as the concept is entertaining, but as of yet, you do not have a loyal viewer in me :x
