I know it's a vague title, but honestly, I'm at a loss here. I just read the following article:

First off, I love DOB. Second, I don't even know how we, as a culture can possibly sink any lower than this. And yet, that will probably be revealed to me by a new and more horrible show in time.

Discussion: Some one, please tell me something good about humanity. Something that proves that evolution hasn't started working in reverse...

i am opposed to non-essential cosmetic surgery to begin with (by "non-essential" i mean i support cosmetic surgery for burn victims or people with severely disfiguring birth defects). but making a *show* about it? wtf?

this reminds me of an article i read somewhere months ago, probably on MSN or somesuch, about 16 year old girls getting nose jobs. the story focused on one particular girl, who had a slightly large nose. but it was just that: slightly larger than normal. but half the comments were acting like her old nose was some hideous monstrosity. in actuality, she was damn cute to begin with, but people convinced her to butcher her face for some stupid ideal that no one can live up to.

I won't get into plastic surgery but I think the success of "reality" shows like this isn't that surprising or necessarily bad (though I do agree they're stupid and bad television). I think it has some psychological root that deep down we're all voyeuristic to some degree. It also probably plays to our ego, watching people most of us probably consider stupid bumbling through (and some or most failing) idiot tasks gives us a smug sense of superiority.

Edit: perhaps I should clarify, when I say "not necessarily bad" I mean I don't think they necessarily have a negative impact on society at large.
