A lot of people appear to be committing (theoretical internet) suicide over this.

I agree with whoever posted idiocracy. The world is doomed.

At least when the winner becomes famous and rich, she can go on talk-shows with a different face each time.

I can't help but have the concern that this type of TV will turn a new generation into entitled spoiled brats.

I realize that this is somewhat reminiscent of the people who say videogames are turning kids into murderers, which I put a lot of effort into refuting. But what makes my concern more valid, and please correct me if I'm wrong (seriously), is that this isn't some fantastical over-the-top kinda scenario like most of the "violent" videogames present. Sure Grand Theft Auto basically functions on real-world physics, but the content is so outlandish that I have trouble believing that its turning kids into serial killers.

But shows like this are different. "Reality TV" may not be true reality, but it is in some respects. Most importantly, these shows are PRESENTED as reality, and even if the concepts are kinda ridiculous, the presentation is that this is how people in this social group or career behave in the real world. And if a child or preteen has no true life experience, might begin to use this so-called "reality" as a form of life experience and may begin to mimic the behaviors seen therein. And if enough kids are drawn in by this charade, then reality will eventually warp itself to that standard. Maybe I'm just being panicky.

I certainly wouldn't suggest banning these types of things, because I'm very against the government overstepping itself, but I just wish that we could change the course of this trend by not buying into it.

I feel like my grandparents right now.
See the problem with this argument is that you assume people are so unintellegent that they can't understand and contextualize reality TV. You're Wrong. In the same way that people think that gamers can't contextualize violent videogames. your making mass assumptions and you really do sound like an anti videogame crusader
But hold on a sec, I'm not talking about "people" in general. I can contextualize it, my wife can, my mother can...because we have life experiences in the true reality that have taught us that this isn't how people really do things. But my 10 year old sister doesn't have those experiences, she doesn't have any real basis of comparison that would teach her that this isn't actually "reality".

Again, I'm not crusading, I don't want the government to ban this stuff or anything like that.

That sounds absolutely terrible. But not surprising when we've got shows like the diverse "...Idol", Talkshows and "reality"-shows all over TV.

Does it make sense for me to say I'm really surprised, but at the same time, not surprised at all?

I was just physically sick in my mouth.

I'm going to form A.R.T.V , a radical 'anti reality tv group'. We'll systematically go from country to country, sterilising anyone who appears on any show like this.

Our numbers will be few, our cause... unequalled and our resolve, unquestionable.

I need members. Any takers?
Sir, I'd be honoured to fight with you!
Excellent... Our numbers are growing.
We can man the operation from here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Anti-reality-TV-group?created=1&forcewrite=1]
Hahah.

Absolutely excellent.

OT: The sad thing is, I'm not even surprised anymore that this is gonna air. I hope to God it won't air here, because then I'd have even more reason to not watch tv...

Wait a sec.

Would we be limited specifically to medical sterilization or are we going by the broader definition of "make sure they never breed by any means necessary"? I have a hammer. 's All I'm saying.

OT: The part in the article that mentioned that the non-losers of each challenge get a syringe of botox for a quick injection was the worst to me. I still remember the days when people discussed whether or not you should even be injecting (!)toxins in your fucking face(!), but apparently we've now hit the point where "ooh, free face-toxic!" is an acceptable response.

That show is hilarious IRL trolling aimed at militant feminists everywhere.

If you look at it like that it seems hilarious, to me at least.

I don't understand why rich people think plastic surgery looks better, every time I see a celebrity with plastic surgery I go "BUGHHHH!"

And now I'll be spending a while on Cracked.

Funny article though.
I love cracked.com and read this article a few days ago. I am half tempted to give up on TV mainly because most of what I watch can be purchased on DVD anyway. The idea of Bridalplasty sickens me. To be honest though, I can't wait for the season finale, when the 'winner' goes up to the alter and her husband rejects her for being a narcissistic ****. Alternate ending number 2: Viewers vote for their least favorite contestant who is then pumped full of everyone else's fat.

Not too far to go until the running man becomes reality.....
Which will be Awesome, if its like the Richard Bachman (Stephen King for you not purists) book.

OT: basically, its saying that we're to the point where culture and reality is being stupidified.

My take on it:

For starters reality TV is not reality. It's entertainment that doesn't have to pay actual actors and writers. None of the stuff is scripted, but you can sure as hell bet there are guys off camera telling the people on camera to play up or tone down certain events and aspects of themselves. The people on the show are doing the show for the same reasons people go on game shows and the same reasons actors act - a chance at fame and money.

This show may not work out because the premise tips just a little to far into "we like to watch people suffer and stress out for our amusement" territory, and because the winners get something that is a bit more controversial then normal. Still I hardly see this as any worse the a bunch of men or women making asses of themselves all for the sake of a shot at a doomed relationship.

My thought on why this concept fills you with anger rather then just enough contempt to change the channel? Because cracked told you so, and that is placing way to much faith and support in a comedy website that twists studies, facts, and whole sciences around to make amusing list articles.
