If your tastes are anything like mine, Assassin's Creed and Just Cause 2 will make you happier in general.

Not that it makes a difference, after the people rattling off lists of 5 or 6 'must plays' (Why? No-one is going to pay that much in one go).

What kinds of games are you in to? It's easy to grab a list of the top-ten in popularity but it'd be easier for us to make suggestions (old and new) if we know what you like to play/have probably played before.
I usually play Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario, etc. But I am slowly getting into shooters and I've been into RPGs for a long time.
You're probably gonna hear this a lot, but hold out for Skyrim if you're waiting for a good RPG.

You're starting off with some decent FPS's, so no need to rush out and buy more. I also suggest getting Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, as it's probably pretty cheap right now.

i would probably recommend the assassins creed(s), halo reach and battlefield 3 when it comes out.
-assassins creed (not the first) for its story/gameplay
-halo reach for the multiplayer (campaigns not bad either)
-battlefield 3 because the beta seems decent and it'll be better than CoD.

Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 3, Dead Space 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution are all good titles.

I'd say return it, but since I doubt you'd be so inclined, I hope you'll consider picking up Red Dead redemtion!

Mass Effect 1 and 2.
The first one has it's flaws, but is enjoyable none-the-less, with a great story and set of characters, and the second is an amazing game, but doesn't feel right unless you use a profile that's already gone through the first one.

If you have friends to play with, get Castle Crashers. My favourite Co-Op title on XBLA.

Halo Reach (I loved the story and missions layout more than previous halos .. also NO FLOOD yay)
Ace Combat 6 (Great arcade shooter with angels ... i mean planes)
Gears of Wars (2/3 are phenomenal ... have yet to play 3 but 2 was Epic specially content-wise)
Red Dead Redemption (GTA with horses, cowboys, and indians ... and cowgirls!)
Bayonetta and Vanquish (They are pretty cheap these days)
Saint Rows 2 and Assassin Creed 2.

Have fun, and oh, Shadow Complex from XBLA. Get it! :)

Gears Of War 3 would be a good choice, seeing as lots of people are currently playing it, and it's a damn fun game (in my humble opinion).

All you need is Fallout 3 and Oblivion, the two best games I have ever played. Maybe Fallout New Vegas as well as it is a great game too.

Oh and the Assassin Creed and Mass Effect series. AC1 is pretty bad but its worth the $15 to experience the story. AC2 is great, but loses momentum and ACB is pure genius. ME1 and 2 are up there on my top 10 games as well as ACB.

Other people have mentioned a lot of the essential purchases, so can I mention a few of my favourites from XBLA?

Even if you don't have any points, you can still get a few things completely free. Such as Hexic HD, Doritos Crash Course, and Harm's Way. (Does anybody know of any other free games on Live?)

If you like puzzle and strategy, then I can recommend Catan. It's a great little game which supports online play, and I find myself playing it most nights. I hear Carcassonne is also a good board-game.

And finally, don't forget to look at the Indie Games section for some incredibly cheap minigames (although the quality varies wildly). From this ection I can recommend Miner Dig Deep for some serious OCD-soothing times, and I MAED A GAME WITH ZOMBI3S INIT which is a fun little twin-stick shooter. Remember all Indie games have trial versions so you can play before you buy.

Welcome to 360!

Start with the old Xbox classics and see If you want to try the sequels after that.

HALO: CE
Gears of War
Mass Effect

IF you like em.. Try HALO 2-3-ODST-Reach, Mass Effect 2, Gears of War 2-3.
But don't waste the money before you know if Its worth it.

Another thing... Gears of War is best in Coop. Halo is also good for coop, but it might distract you from the story.
