Hello Escapist,
As the title implies, I just completed Fable 3, I don't know how to feel overall, as it didn't fill me with joy yet it didn't leave me disappointed, just dead in the middle of 'that was alright' now i loved Fable 1 and 2, but this one didn't really feel like those two in the sense of charm,I didn't feel the need to do sidequests as I did in the second and wasn't compelled to complete the game as soon as possible, bummer.
what did the escapist think of Fable 3?
Sort of two steps forward, one-and-a-half steps back. Part of the problem is that they decided to simplify things a bit too much.
Game got off to a too-slow start. Fable 2 started off slow but once it properly got going, it properly got going. Fable 3 gradually introduces us to weapons and spells as if their system is really complicated... which it isn't.
Once it got going it was generally an improvement and I really enjoyed some of the early quests. One thing I enjoy are quests that come across as stories. Fable 2 had a great bit in one of the DLC where you go inside a cursed snowglobe and Fable 3 has the role-playing mission. I would love to see more stuff like this or more missions based on fairy tales.
One thing I'm a bit annoyed about is the DLCing of really basic stuff. Okay, new costumes and dog packs I'm cool with. They're purely cosmetic changes and if you really want to pay for a Highlander costume than more power to you. But when I opened all the Dye Pack chests only to discover some rather noticeable gaps in my dye display (most noticeably black) which can only be filled by shelling out more money... well, that's a bridge too far. This doesn't come across as added content, it comes across as trying to exploit the OCD among us who can't bear to see those four mission gaps in their dye collection.
And the game collapses at the end where they decide to focus on fiscal policy and not adventuring. I know what they're getting at, but when the answer to their moral dilemma is "plug in your controller and leave your 360 on over-night", then you really haven't created much of a dilemma. It all comes down to how long player feel like fucking about without advancing the plot. I was making something like 50,000 gold every five minutes, so to raise the 6.5 million would require about 10 hours of fapping about.
But I still think there's tons of potential here. I would love to see them expand the Sims style interactions even more with more mini-games. I would like to see them present a tougher challenge with the combat (I don't mind the Lego style death penalty, but even Lego offers harder fights). I would love to see more personality types in the Kingdom and greater customizations for NPCs (the attractiveness meter is kind of silly and I would like to see NPCs who react to your wealth, your evil/good meter, even your weight... so even if you're a fat bastard who hangs around in pubs, there's going to be some man or woman who finds this appealing). And I would love to see them utilize more creativity in crafting side-quests. And take a step back from low-content DLC.
