Only about one in three cases will have any kind of firefight, according to what I read.
My interest in this game has just increased tenfold.

I think the reason these people are complaining is that they were led to believe that L.A. Noire was going to be another GTA, and now they are legitimately annoyed that it isn't. I too, just assumed this was another GTA and wasn't even considering buying it until I went through this thread, and now it seems it is something completely different. The problem lies in how the game is advertised, and a lot of people are likely to be disappointed when they get the game and realise it isn't what they wanted.
This should explain alot about the game for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVBdvqRsRJQ&feature=related
Looking through the videos is actually what I started doing as soon as I finished writing that comment, thanks for revealing that this game isn't what I expected. Now that I've seen the videos, this is definitely something I will be buying as soon as possible.

It's a shame the general opinion is that this is just the newest GTA to come out. Lots of GTA fans are going to be disappointed, and lots of people like me could pass over what looks like a really great game.
Yeah...it's kind of silly that most of the preorder bonuses that aren't additional cases are either guns or new suits that improve your weapons when gunplay is supposed to be a small part of the game. Normally I'm all for new outfits, but I really like Cole's Detective uniform. It looks...snazzy.

I'm going to go ahead and say that the people the OP quoted are not the people this game is targeted at. I, for one, look forward to the increased roleplaying immersion to come about of this new face-rendering focus, and don't so much mind that the only role I get to play is that of the incorruptible cop.

EDIT: I am also fascinated with the idea of being able to read someone's tells to figure out what they're ACTUALLY saying as opposed to taking them at their word. (I've been really oblivious to body language most of my life, and am only now figuring it out.)

Complaining about the investigating and lack of random murder in L.A. Noire? Really? Have they forgotten that the protagonist is a police officer and not a raging psychopath? Any vague relation to Rockstar does not mean " This game is a GTA Clone". Even in RDR I didn't shoot civilians, and rather took the time to help them. I also enjoyed Mafia 2, because of the story, because of the setting. I like crime games but my friend tried to convince me not to get it because it didn't have freeroam. To me, freeroam wasn't the point. He tried to argue that it had no replay value, simply because it had a semi-linear story. I've lost count of how many times I've played Max Payne 2 and most of that was running down scripted halways and fighting scripted AI. I still had fun.
Mafia 2 isnt a freeroam game, technicly it is a freeroam game but it isnt a sandbox game. Most people think that just because it has a big map it becomes a sandbox game. The game is the way it is because you spend a lot of time driving one place to another in the same city so it makes more sence to make a big city instead of making linear streets for each level.

The fact that most people didnt realised that is why the game was considered mediocre.

What really piqued my interest is the new face rendering technology. The facial animations look incredible.

OT: I can't say that I understand those people at all. Games aren't just about mindlessly running around killing everything in site. But maybe that's just me. I personally believe that games have the potential to construct a more interesting and engaging story than film.

Just to throw my two cents in here, I was incredibly psyched for L.A. Noire. I'm a huge fan of the Noir genre, and when I heard that Rockstar was making what seemed like a GTA sandbox style game where you played a detective in the 1940's, I damn near had to change my pants.

The game was one of the reasons I even bought a PS3 (it was going to be a PS3 exclusive when I first heard about it, shows how long ago it was) and my reason for not buying it now isn't because the game lacks some feature, but merely because...well...it costs money. I'll probably pick it up sometime next year when it's gonna be 19.95 at wal-mart (I'm being hyperbolic, but you know the game is gonna drop in price)

To be honest, I didn't know that the game lost its sandbox style gameplay until I clicked on this very topic, and I'm not gonna lie...that is a bit of a bummer for me. But that alone is hardly going to make me change my mind about the game itself.

If you were excited for the game, and then decided to pass on it because it doesn't have multi-player or whatever minor reason you may have, guess what? You probably didn't want it all that badly to begin with.

Your reason for wanting it may be different than mine, but if you're a fan of the Noir genre, or even just a fan of Rockstar games, the real question is why WOULDN'T you still buy it?

In my opinion you should either have a well thought out, personally justified reason for buying it that doesn't simply involve complaining. But of course...this IS the internet...

I am looking forward to L.A Noire and I love that it has NO MP because that mean that they used all man power focusing on giving the best SP experiences this game can give.

1. Just because it's a Rockstar game doesn't mean it's got to be sandboxy.

2. Thank God there's no multiplayer and the focus lies exclusively on the single player.

3. Isn't it ironic that the idiots who complain about not being able to shoot everyone will play 'L.A. Noire' nontheless and are forced to learn about emphasis and subtility? The Gameplay will teach them.

You have to keep in mind, the MAJORITY of Rockstar's lineup are composed of sand box murder simulators. Over time you begin to accrue a certain "fan base" and culminate certain "expectations" from each of your games. I'll bet many onlookers expected a game in the same vein of Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry or Samuel L. Jackson on a normal day. Personally, I'm all for a more story oriented game with stronger character development. Rockstar experimenting is a GREAT thing and should be encouraged, it's never really good to stagnate like the Madden or Call of Duty franchises.

Well, once my gun is drawn, can I fire on innocent bystanders?

As in, apparently even if you fail an investigation, there will still be a way to advance in the ranks, thus advancing in the game. So it isn't as though failing an investigation is an instant game over.

That's all I know, though. I have zero information on what the alternative methods of progressing through the game are.
I'm crossing my fingers for a minigame where you blow the police chief in a backroom.

My problem with the game, is that there are only story missions, no side quests. This the same problem I had with Mafia 2. Fun game but once I beat it, I was done. Nothing to bring m back into the game.

I...won't bother with the second half of that post. As for the first half...

No. The only times you get into a firefight seem to be away from the general public (Like behind an abandoned warehouse), and Cole holsters his gun once the shooting is over.

I think this may pull off what heavy rain was trying to achieve with a game driven by story and mainly about the story but which is still fun to play cause lets be honest heavy rain was just one big quick time event.

The phrases: "Let's make it more like GTA," and "It has to have multiplayer," are ruining gaming, except for Saints Row
Especailly because multiplayer normally means a shorter single player. Im in the middle of playing KOTOR, 24 hours in and I'm not even half way. I beat Homefront in about 3 hours, and Black Ops in about 6.
"....but blah blah blah *bad grammar* *misspelled word* people like multiplayer *misused punctuation* blah blah blah."
Multiplayer is only good as long as the game is popular. Case in point, every game that is not the most recent CoD or Halo. So I'd much rather have a nice, long single (or co-op) player story mode.

As for sandbox games, I enjoy them. I also enjoy a well controlled story. There has to be an equalibrium.

Finally, ITS A GAME ABOUT A FUCKING DETECTIVE! Its not going to play the same as GTA.

EDIT:
You know, Rockstar, back when they went by a different name, made Lemmings (for those of you old enough to remember Lemmings). So not everything by R* has to be sandbox crime drama.

I've been waiting for a time when I could use this quote, and I feel as though this time is now.

It's funny how so many people are jumping on the defense for Rockstar in their choice to not add multiplayer or the ability to kill random people. The truth of the matter... leaving those two features out of the game DOES NOT make L.A. Noire a BETTER game... it only makes it worse... any way you look at it... (Unless you're one of those extreme religious types that get upset with violence in video games... in which case, why are you playing Rockstar games in the first place?).

And yeah... I know I'm going to get the "more development time for the single player" rebuttal... but I highly doubt Rockstar would skimp on the SP to make the MP... they haven't in the past.

Oh... and I'm using the simple logic of: More things to do in a video game = an all around better video game...
Edit: I realized this will probably bring about misunderstanding. I don't agree with MetalGearPoose at all. AT ALL.

Yeah, it seems that those people should look for games that cater more to their tastes. Either that or they just like bitching. Just because Rockstar's main franchise is GTA it doesn't mean that all their games have to follow the same formula.

That said, I'm still pretty bummed that Rockstar presents Table Tennis isn't a free-roam game where I can steal a ping-pong table, get on top of it and slide it down the street while shooting ping-pong balls at passers-by.

I think if you could be a homicidal detective it would be cool. Then you could get assigned to cases where you had been the perp. And while pretending to investigate said cases, you would really just drive around and kill more innocent people.

I think it mostly has to do with replay value issues. Mafia 2 suffered from this problem in my opinion. I still think it'll be great, but judging by reviews when it comes out, i might just rent it.

I don't mind having a non sandbox game and I prefer a more story driven narrative. In that respect I'm psyched for LA Noire.
The fact that it doesn't have multiplayer is something that I consider a plus. Frankly, I don't care much for multiplayer and it means that all the development effort was put into making a quality singleplayer game.

So, good cop, bad cop? Hehe, would be kinda funny if you can do that all the time to your suspect in it :p

Or was that bad cop, and 'badder' cop
