I just found a SNES (A Super Nintendo Entertainment System) in my room.
Apparently, it was my Dad's from back when he was in college or something, which is weird, because he's around 47, and I had no idea that SNES has been around for that long.

So anyway, he only had around 5 games. He had:

Joe N' Mac (A fun caveman beat 'em up)
Super Mario All Stars (Which I guess counts as 3 Mario games)
Tetris (Oh Joy)
Chess (OH SWEET JESUS!)
And Super Mario Cart (I love the Wii version, so this one should be a blast, ya gotta love the 16 bit graphics)

So I was looking online to find the best SNES games to buy, but I said, "Ya know what? Fuck that! My fellow Escapists would know better than anyone!"

So my fellow Escapists, what are the best SNES games, and what should I buy?
I'm open to anything but Megaman, because Megaman is too hard for a pussy like me!

EDIT: Oh, right.

I like prety much anything that isn't ridiculously hard.
I like Action, I like Fighting, I like games like The Sim's and Harvest Moon, I LOVE RPG'S (Real RPG'S, Like Dragon Age and KOTOR, but games like Diablo are good too, although I doubt that anything like Diablo is available for SNES.)

Sooo... Yea.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a classic.

I don't know what you mean by "Real" RPG's, but if that includes JRPG's, get Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.

Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Shadowrun and The 7th Saga. Still have my snes with those games and I actually found a copy of earthbound for under 30 dollars a few years back. Check e-bay and dont be afraid to contact the seller directly if they own a store, its what I did and the shipping was 5 dollars.

*edit* Dammit forgot legend of zelda: a link to the past which is awesome and while it pissed me off eye of the beholder was fun.

I can't believe that nobody reccomended either of these, but get F-Zero, and Mario is Missing. Yes, Mario is Missing. The SNES Version is actually pretty good, if you want something that you can beat in about an hour. And F-Zero... It's got Captain Falcon for god's sake. He's the video game equivalent of Chuck Norris, and he's voiced by the guy who played Vegeta in SSBM!! What more can you want?

Reminds of the fact that there's supposedly a Sega Genesis in my basement (was my dad's as well from around when he and my mom were dating) and I still haven't found it, I have discovered the games there was Altered Beast and some Sonic game I think it might've been number 2, and some game involving Mickey Mouse and a castle.

This same thing recently happened to a friend of mine, actually. Like I yelled at him when he asked me what games to get for it, Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, and Super Metroid! You cannot go wrong with any of those and, if you want a challenge, Castlevania IV will entertain you as well as frustrate you for hours.

How in the hell can you have a "quintessential" SNES list without Super Mario RPG? How I say?

Shame on you Escapist.

I don't have a problem with JRPG's, I just have a problem with androgynous teenagers that color their hair with lead based paint.

Really. I bet people trip over Sega Saturns on their way out the door or something.

Oh, and games for the SNES?
Earthbound
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Final Fantasy II (IV)
Turtles in Time
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV
Chrono Trigger

And that's off the top of my head, especially when you're considering how epic the library of this beast was.

[sub][sub]All you need is a cascading, golden light and a chorus to sing Hallelujah, and you're pretty much getting the idea.[/sub][/sub]

Lost Vikings
There it is! I read this post and was shocked, Shocked! that no one mentioned this game yet! When I was a kid we had a SNES and we had a few basic games for it, but none I loved as dearly as The Lost Vikings.
Other games that were good:
Final Fantasy 3/6
Super mario 3
Donkey kong
Earthworm Jim (If you liked the series)
Claymates
Edit: It's been said a few times, But Chrono trigger was one of the best games for the Snes. It optimised the graphics of the era and the story and gameplay were sometihng that is still not matched to this day.

God I miss my old Snes. I only lost it a few years ago, too :(

Super Mario World and Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past. There were more but I can't remember them all. The SNES was awesome and had some great games. I, like your dad, owned one!

Neither....one of you....actually bothered to read the post, did you? (If you did, you really have to work on the old "Reading Comprehension" skills.)

What's that? Oh, I have nothing else to contribute to this topic. I'm 18, so naturally I never had a SNES.

Actually, I have a pretty rare (I think) cartridge that has all 3 of the NES Super Mario bro. games, Mario: the Lost Levels, and Super Mario World.

And what about my post indicates that I hadn't read the post, or that I need to work on my reading comprehension?

Lucky bastard.
Final Fantasy 6 (3)
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Castlevania 4
I'm not going to say A Link to the Past because it's over used.
Super Mario World

Then again most of these games are also on the GBA but if you want to play the originals then go for it.
