As the subject suggests, I just bought a PS3. Game style I don't like are

Racing/Car Games- Nothing personal I just get bored playing them

Japanese Role Playing Games- Baldur's Gate II is one of my favorite games of all time, but I've never fallen into the Final Fantasy style.

Fighting/Tournament Games- I liked these more as a kid, but grew out of them. Not trying to troll with that comment- they just don't hold my interest anymore.

So what's the best game to get?

(Also note this is my first Playstation of any variety- so series that have been re-released like the first 2 god of war games are fair game- and something I'm already looking into)

Thanks!

Uncharted and Uncharted 2.
Resistance and Resistance 2.
Valkyria Chronicles (not your typical JRPG, more strategy than anything).

First off, shouldn't you... decide what games you want before buying a system?

Now for suggestions:
Demon's Souls
Metal Gear Solid 4
inFamous
God of War 3
Dragon Age (if you don't have it on something else)

That... is more than enough for any decent amount of time

Edit: oh and I forgot Heavy Rain, thank you people below me.

Heavy Rain, both Uncharteds, both Ratchet & Clanks (or all three if you count the downloadable one), Infamous, all three God of Wars (the PS2 collection + 3)... that's a good start.

Folklore is an amazing game. I'm not really sure what category to put it under, but everything about it is pretty amazing.

Nier is another good one. It could technically be a JRPG, but it's very far from anything Final Fantasy-like. There's real-time combat and the story is rather dark. There's nothing really "happy" about it.

I'm also going to throw Resonance of Fate out there. It's another JRPG, but it has a very western feel instead. The gameplay is near impossible to explain but it's turn-based, but it's gun combat only and...it'd be best to look it up on YouTube or something for a gameplay trailer. But it's definitely one of my favorites on PS3. The difficulty will make you want to throw it out a window (very steep learning curve!) but it's so much fun once you get it.

And I'll also say Heavy Rain, which people will suggest a bazillion times.

The Assassin's Creed games. The first one can be a bit repetitive at times but trust me, the second one will have you hooked to the series.

Get a PSN card and buy the Spyro trilogy. 3D Platforming at its finest. Flower and PixelJunk Shooters are also fantastic games.
And NieR and Demon's Souls are both fantastic buys as well, moreso the former because it's dirt cheap by now.

Why has no one posted Little Big Planet yet?
Damn, forgot about LittleBigPlanet 2.

Get that too. It's absolute euphoria if you play it with a couple of friends.

Well, apparently Yakuza 3 is pretty good... Not played it my self, mainly because I haven't finished the second game. However, given how many have recommended it... I'd give it a go if your already familiar with the series. Otherwise I don't have much to add that everyone else hasn't already added.

As others have recommended, I also highly recommend Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet

You should also check out a Katamari Damacy game, I had a blast playing Katamari Forever this past winter break.

Lots of input! Thanks escapist!
@BurningDragon- I knew lots of games I wanted to get, a lot of games I'm reading now. But I figure some gaming community input might help clear up the long list of wants.

Some great suggestions. I should have mentioned that a lot of cross console games I already have on either PC (Dragon Age) and 360 (assassin's creed/mass effect)

Thanks again for all the immediate input!

I second all of these choices. Everything I was going to say is in this post.

A lot of solid gold has been covered.

I can recommend:

Batman Arkham Asylum. The free DLC Joker Maps are worth it alone.

Castlevania - Lords of Shadows. Gorgeous graphics, intense combat, thrilling action, clever puzzles, and it comes on just one disc.

Bioshock. Doesn't matter what kind of games you like, Bioshock is a MUST HAVE for every gamers library.

God of War Collection. Amazing graphical upgrades to an awesome series. But trust me when I say you'll want a USB-to-PS2 controller adapter for the experience because those squishy trigger buttons you need to mash to open heavy doors won't work too well.

Most of the others you should get have been posted already.

PS: Don't use it for a Blu-Ray player. I see dozens die every week because of that. We give very little for defective PS3's these days.
