My parents were really cool on the whole thing. They knew they could trust me with games, and they pretty much let me play whatever I want. I was 10 when I first played Goldeneye. Yeah. That was awesome.

And it didn't hurt me. I'm a post-graduate student. I have no criminal record. I have never hit another human being or animal in violence and anger. I have had to hit my dog once or twice because it was trying to bite another dog (it didn't though).

So I was lucky. My parents were cool with my hobby. Not so much my Brother's addiction to WoW though, but that's over now.

My mom always said that I could play a few hours a day when I were younger, and when I wanted more grown-up-games she talked a little to my Uncle, who is also a gamer, and she were fine with it :D

I don't think my mom particularly understands the "gamer culture" or anything like that (despite playing Mario and Zelda back in the day), but she respects my decision to play games.

I'm certainly old enough to make my own decisions of whether or not to play games since I'm past being a teen, but I'm glad she doesn't disapprove all the same.

My mother doesnt care anymore, and i played L4D2 with my dad over Halloween, so my parents are pretty ok with it.
Mother was to thrilled with me playing FPS when i was younger and rightfully so.

Starcraft?

Yeah, 'cause that'll turn you into a murderer -_-
If anything it'll turn you into a General, or some boring businessman.

(Jokin' 'bout the micromanagement! :p )

My dad has bought and played every single Call of Duty. My parents are aware of my ability not to be turned into a foaming-at-the-mouth murderer by flashing lights so they've always let me play whatever.

My Dad was never big into it, no GTA - I had to smuggle that in, but seeing as how he let me watch the Alien movies when I was in the single digits...

Most other games weren't that big of a deal so I've never really had an issue with it.
Hell, he bought me DMC1 because while it did say 'M' he couldn't find a reason not to allow an 'M' game when he had bought me a 'R' movie just a month prior.

tho every now and again there's a debate if gaming is good for me or not... but only comes up once a year.

My parents don't like games especially shooters and things.
But they don't mind me playing them. They know I won't go into a murder rampage.

They do complain when I do buy a new game, that I could use the money for something better like...books and such.

But when I start the convo with "I bought a new game because..." and mostly with the reason it's cheaper, they nod and say that it's good.

My mother now does play games. Casual Games.
I'm gonna try to get her a steam account. ^____^

I wasn't really allowed to play GTA till I was 15 (legal age in aus). but I do think 10 years olds play that kind of game is just retarded
True, you have a very good point, but i learned off games, i played gta when i was 9 and I watched my dad when I was 7, funny kind of influence considering he ended up as a cop in life, while I who grew up on Resident Evil and GTA turned out as a honour student at cambridge house high school, reading non stop and still playing plenty of games, I also watch alot of Zero punctuation AND YES I DO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING SAID as i grew up on gta ect ect and my cuz tells me everything. Imn a clusterphobic,my mum is dedicated to the chuch while my dad is too busy at work and my sister is always partying at university, imn also addicted to guns and anime, but hate blood in real life, so even though i played those games, i think i turned out pretty much ok, prob better than my sis considring my iq is 134 :D so it does not always ruin your life playing violent games at 9, after all i am 11 myself and all it did was open my eyes to the real world.

WOW that was a mouthful! :D

If you are a minor(i.e less than 16 years of age)Your parents are just doing their duty
They are real good parents no matter how much you hate them.
Any parent that lets their toddler play Manhunt or any game that is not appropriate for the age is seriously a bad parent.
On Topic:
No,I never had any debate with my parents about video games
They never complained that I play games with are too violent except for a few comments from my father. But I would not blame them. They had not even played one video game in their child hood.
I was the one that brought gaming to the family with my NES

my parents only complain if they happen to catch me playing at 3Am in the morning. And if exams are near.
This. And I play on earphones if i'm playing games like GTA. I don't think they approve of hearing "fuck" in every other sentence.
Other than that, my dad can see me assassinate guards brutally in AC and comment that it's cool.

My mum stole Blade Runner and Grim Fandango off me when i moved out, She's a big fan of point and clicks/mystery games.

She always objected to over the top violence in any format, comics (2000AD) film or video games because she felt is not something you should be exposed to from a young age. As we got older it was more about not spending to much time on them.

Nah... my parents were never fans of censorship in any way, as long as I did good in school and wasn't a total moron when making decisions they pretty much let me do what I wanted. They were a part of that whole hippy rock and roll movement in the 60's.

My mother and I would debate the topics of censorship, while my father just "censored" everything.... until MW2. Then my father took my 360 into his room (before I had bought a hard drive) and beat it that day ON VETERAN. Now my father has started to enjoy FPS's while my mother is still trying to figure out Kirby Air Ride (the GC game that only used one button and the analog stick.) As long as I didn't go apeshit, my folks were okay with it.

My dad does the occasional pun about me playing so much, else he finds it fine, and many in my family play games so it isn't really a taboo.
