I was wondering if anyone else has ever tried to civilly discuss video game censorship etc with their folks and what parents other than my own have to say on the subject.
my parents didn't care about age ratings and played them with me when i was young. playing Doom and Mortal Kombat with my dad was awesome.

Starcraft? Wtf? Yeah my parents had the phase of going through every game and making sure the rating was alright, etc etc but by the time i was 16 they pretty much let me loose, they still bug me about gaming late or too much or b4 exams but that's fair enough.

eh. my parents dont care when it comes to me and video games. I started playing them with my grandfather when i was about 3 (yeah, gamer for LIFE)after that, i just would see which other games existed. my parents got me them when they could which i appreciate them for. and now as long as i keep my grades up i play as long as i want, whenever i want :p

I feel sooooo bad for you. My dad practically taught me how to play games starting with Zelda for the SNES. My older brother and I could pretty much get whatever games we wanted as long as either we paid for them, the were a gift, or it was in the barron stretches of time between Christmas and birthdays and we had been good for a long time. Though mom always thought they rot your mind she never opposed them more than, "Pause that game RIGHT NOW and take out the trash." which was usually to my bro who likes playing online shooters.

Used to be an hour only, and just wouldn't like things such as GTA. Any violent fantasy thing they were a bit worried about, but let it go.
It's relaxed so now I'm getting about 3 hours a day on, which I'm annoyed at myself at.

I have really awesome parents when it comes to restrictions
Totally okay with me playing games all the time, as long as I'm doing good in school and not falling asleep all the time (A long running problem for me)

My parents still play video games.

I lucked out, I realize this. Me and my Dad played Red Dead yesterday actually. Undead Nightmare is awesome.

My ma doesn't really care that I play games as long as I get my assignments done, on a few occasions I have caught my ma watching me play MW2 and making fun of me whenever I die, it was a pretty good time. My dad still makes fun of me but not harshly, I know he is just messing around with me.

My dad is an avid computer genius who dabbles in programming and games. He took me onto his lap when I was four and actually taught me how to play WarCraft.

And I thank him for that.

I've been down the same road man, couldn't convince them to let me play T games until I was 15, and at 21 they still won't let me bring M games in the house. Now that I'm older though I really don't mind debating the issue. Although they were over protective and wouldn't let play games on the recommended age level, I think its a good thing that my parents understood video games and the rating system enough to be a parent about it and just restrict my play of them. They weren't one of the parents that want the government to do to do the restrictions for them, they took responsibility as parents and there for never had to complain about the games industry. In the end thats way more preferred than being ignorant and then blaming companies for not making games exclusively for children.

I remember when I was playing Modern Warfare 2 when my mum was in the room, playing "No Russian". While playing, I talked to my mum how this level cause a major uproar due to killing civilians and how I feel how its all a load of crap.

My mum simply replied "...But it's only a game."
she sounds quite reasonable, if that thing happened in a movie you would too just say ''its just a movie''.

I've never had to debate it because my parents have been fine with them since I was little. I grew up watching my dad play some of the goriest games available at the time. xD The only time they really start to get mad over it is if my grades start slipping. :/

I had a similar situation a few days ago, but i was victorious. I threw out every defense I could think of while they were a broken record about how 'video games cause violence' which as we all know is complete bollocks. It must have taken an hour for us to finish arguing about the law, but suffice to say they'll never question me buying another M rated game.

My parents bought me games like Resident Evil when I was about eight, so you can pretty much guess their stance on it. To be fair though I had been playing games since I could operate a controller, so it was to be expected they'd be used to it.
In fact I even recall my parents both working to beat the original Tomb Raider together, so evidently they aren't against it. Should consider myself lucky I guess.

Oh, and I'm from the UK... nobody attacks games here. Seemingly ever.

My folks are fine with games, but they try to claim they have some kind of effect on me. Well, actually, only my mom says that.

Example: After playing about 3 hours of Fallout every day for about a month, I got into the habit of drinking from glass coke bottles and just storing the caps in my drawer. My dad was amused by it, but my mom thought I'd gone of the deep end.

However! I absolutely love WoW, which my dad can't STAND, and I've been trying to play in secret for about two weeks now. So I guess they're kinda miffed about gaming.

On the flip side, now that I'm a parent, I think I'm pretty lax on the censorship. My son is two and he loves playing Lego Batman with me. He watches Spiderman (the movie, not the cartoon) every day. And he gets really excited when he sees us playing MW2 online ("You're gonna get the sneaky!" ... the guys are sneaky I guess?).
D'awww.

He wanna be a Rogue.
