In the field of strategy games, I heartily recommend the Company of Heroes series and the World in Conflict games-both are great fun to play and have outstanding replay value: who doesn't want to listen to a unit of German soldiers trade idle gossip while maintaining weapons after a hard fight or yell "WOLVERINES!!!" while fending off the Rooskies in Seattle over and over again?

Also: any Dawn of War game (bar Soulstorm) is a must-buy if you're into 40K!

Civilization V
Amnessia: Dark Descent
Doom (for the endless amount of WADs you can get)
Total War (which one depends on your prefered era)
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Baulder's Gate 2
Crysis (for the graphics)
Unreal (if you've never played it before, you should. It's very good)

Depends on your taste! :)

I'd recommend you to buy Skyrim and then pay a visit to this site: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/ just to get an idea of how the modding community can enhance the experience of a game with so many imaginative and unique ways...
You will find all kind of things, from graphics enhancements to new items, npcs, quests and stuff, or even new gameplay mechanics.

If you liked the gameplay of 90's FPSs I'd recommend you Serious Sam 3,a game that combines truly old-school gameplay, with modern gaming quality standards! :)

If you want an action game that plays like nothing you played before, try S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat. It combines free roaming,FPS,RPG,horror, and survival elements in a way no other game does. Attention though, since it can be quite horrifying and challenging and it might frustrate you at some points because of its difficulty.

Last but not least, consider trying out free games like Quake Live, and pay a visit to Romnation to see what retro console games you can play on your new system!

Have fun! :D

I would recomend Darksiders 2, Deus Ex human Revolution, Guild wars 2, Dawn of war series,
Civilization V (if you get get gods and kings). I would recomend checking steam sales as its always worth a look. I was thinking of picking up fall of cybertron and buying the pack for planetside 2 myself when I'v got the cash.

First thing on your agenda should be to install Team Fortress 2 for free (if you already have a steam game I think?).

Maybe you should try your hand at an MMO too, Guild Wars 2 is pretty damn big at the moment and there's no sub fee for it, it also has crazy-fun PvP.

I recommend pretty much most Valve games for PC, Left 4 Dead 1/2 especially which are tonnes of fun multiplayer. Killing floor is also a blast for multiplayer.

Also if you're interested in Indie games then I recommend: The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy, They Bleed Pixels, Terraria, Bastion... I'm sure there's more but they're my favourites.

Also, you've got a pretty nice PC so I wouldn't worry about not being able to run anything for a good while.

Call of Pripyat.. the siren.. the siren you will hear in your sleep, you will wake in sweat looking for cover
I remember running to find a building to shelter from an emission. I found one and got inside a room with 3 doors, one on each wall. Some moments after zombified Military men started coming in to the room from all 3 doors! I won't forget these moments of thrill where zombies where coming from everywhere and I was trapped while an emission! :D

Crysis is an excellent game and would be even if it weren't so darned pretty. So you should buy that.

Torchlight is pretty amazing, too. The second one comes out in a few days, so you should wait for that but it'll almost certainly be well worth it.

Deus fucking Ex.

Not going to stress your system any, and will look butt ugly, but is a rite of passage for all master race hopefuls.

There is one thing you absolutely need to play as any gamer, and that's The Stanley Parable. Technically, it's a mod to Half-Life 2, but you don't need Half-Life 2 to play it. It's free, so download it and play it now. You will be happy you did.

There's The Binding of Isaac, which can be best described as Legend of Zelda meets a Rougelike meets your worst nightmares. It is amazing. And cheap, so there's no reason not to play it.

I would also recommend Frozen Synapse, a unique strategy game that's easy to like even if you don't like strategy games. Everything in it is fairly easy to understand, but man, there is a lot of depth to the strategy. I highly recommend it.

I would strongly recommend you get Oblivion on PC. Not to play Oblivion, but to play the astounding mod for it called Nehrim, which is better than Oblivion in pretty much every way. If you liked Oblivion, play it. If you didn't like Oblivion, but liked any other Elder Scrolls game, play it.

And finally, you owe it to yourself to play Black Mesa Source, a free remake of the first Half-Life. It is awesome, although slightly buggy at the moment. You do not need to have played any other of the Half-Life games to enjoy it. You should totally pick it up.

Well Team Fortress 2 should be obvious considering it's free.

Plants Vs. Zombies is also good as well if you're into tower defense games.

Company of Heroes and World in COnflict were already mentioned for strategy games so I'll focus on other things.

-Minecraft
-Terraria
-Killing Floor
-MOBA of your choice (Lol, Hon, or Dota)
-Battlefield 3
-Tropico series is pretty cool, but I wouldn't pay full price for it, get it on sale

I guess I need to mention some of the others then:
- Orange Box + Black Mesa (a simple must have package)
- Tribes Ascend (for some hardcore multi player skiing)
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (for some hardcore multi player FPSing)
- Serious Sam HD First and Second Encounter, maybe SS3 (for hardcore single player FPSing)
- Trine 1&2 (absolutely gorgeous platformers)
- Magicka (for hardcore mages)
- Freespace, Freelancer, Starlancer (for all your space sim needs)
- Homeworld 1&2 (best space RTS to have been sent upon us from the heavens)
- Transformers: War for Cybertron & Fall of Cybertron if you enjoy Gears like shooters

Edit, forgot something important:
- World of Tanks (free to play semi realistic multiplayer game for all your tank porn needs)

Should keep you busy and broke for a while...

Agree with a lot of stuff (especially Deus Ex) but will add:
F.E.A.R: Horror first person shooter. The only one that pulled off action horror while being scary and fun. There are console ports but the PC version is better. Don't play the sequels.
Mount & Blade Warband: Sandbox medieval RPG. A little rough around the edges but quite fun.
XCom: Classic strategy game. If the UI is too much for you (it was for me), check out Xenonauts, an indie game heavily influenced by it, as well as the sequel (probably).
Fallout: The first one is up there with the classic isometric RPG's of the 90's. Fallout 2 is also recommended, although I haven't played it.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Thanks to mods on the pc version, this timeless classic is still a fairly good looking game, modernized in many ways. Easily one of the best games ever made in my books. That said, Mount and blade Warband is really good too. Also Crusader Kings 2, Civilization 4, Endless Space. All great games, all on steam. Steam is your friend on PC.

Look forward to X-com Enemy Unknown, Ufo Alien invasion (free!) and Xenonauts! I'd also take a look at the UFO series (Aftershock and Afterlight only though, the first is kinda meh) although those are a bit different from the first two (Xcom and xenonauts are turnbased, while ufo is realtime)

A lot of really good titles have already been mentioned, but there's another one which you should try: Dwarf Fortress.

It's the most overly complicated and insanely fun game I've come across in a long time, and although I don't play it regularly anymore it's still fun to see how my fortress fails this time around.

If I'm recommending new games, grab a copy of Faster Than Light off Steam. It's a combat-focused space sim, but an unusual one. I think with your specs you might be barely able to handle it. ;) I also had an incredible experience with Bastion.

If you like story-and-atmosphere heavy RPGs and are tolerant of bugs and sub-par action RPG combat, try Vampire Bloodlines: The Masquerade. The game probably won't work on your machine out of the box (re: made on this side of 2005), but there are plenty of fixes and fan-made patches to choose from.

Anything by Valve is also mandatory if you're a PC gamer. Look for the Orange Box and Portal 2. Half-Life 2 is a little dated in terms of graphics (aside from the facial animations, which are still light-years ahead of most games), but the Episodes have a lot more polish. Still an incredible game.
