The Total War series is definitely recommended as an introduction into empire-building Grand Strategy types of games.

Or if you are already experienced with the genre from earlier generation, and want something less like Risk more like a realistic, in-depth simulation of historical politics, then also look into Crusader Kings 2, and similar Grand Strategy games from Paradox Interactive.

Otherwise, those are VERY hardcore, so if you aren't a strategy gamer at all, just start with Total War.

FTL just came out and it's a ton of fun so I suggest you buy that. It's $9 on Steam and the dev's website at the moment.

After that Borderlands 2 is coming out on the 18th and Torchlight 2 is coming out on the 20th and those are both going to be awesome games.

Well, my first suggestion is getting Steam. It's almost a must-have. It have loads of F2P games such as Team fortress 2, Tribes: Acent and much more which is some quality games. It also have a huge collection of games to your service and lot's of Steam Sales. Also, http://www.gog.com/ is good if you perhaps wanna get some older titles.

A lot of GREAT games on there, but you may have to be in a certain mood to enjoy them eg. into retro games with all the pro's and con's it brings. And some of them definitely have a limited appeal.

Other than that the big titles are Valve, Creative Assembly, Relic, Bethesda, Firaxis and Bioware (old Bioware that is) games. Depends on what you're into, but the good folks here here have covered a lot of the best titles from the last 10 odd years, which I think should be more than enough to get you going.

Go get a source engine game and play Black Mesa. I've been playing it recently, it's pretty fun.

If you like strategy, pretty much this:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11732/

Battles tend to look like

and you can zoom out to control 'em like

...I geeked out so hard the first time I saw that interface...
Oh, and it's a natural mouse-wheel zoom, you can stop at any level you want, taking in exactly as much of the battlefield as you're concerned with.

What games do you recommend?
It all depends on your tastes.

From you small list, I can assume you enjoy strategy games, RPGs, and first-person shooters.

As such, I can recommend some of my favorites in those catagories:
Half-Life series
Portal series
Homeworld
Company of Heroes
Unreal series (up to 2004)
Doom series
Quake series
Battlefield series
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Crysis
Sins of a Solar Empire series
Dawn of War series
Zork series

I could go on and on, really. So I'll just recommend this instead...

Just download Steam. Create an account there and at Good Old Games/GoG.com. Start perusing their extensive catalogs of games. And, just see what looks to suit your fancy. They sometimes have demos you can try. Steam has quite a collection of free-to-play games now. GoG has some fantastic classics.

Really, it's all about what you're looking for.

I wouldn't honestly go for the "old classics" if you haven't played them before, as many people have a lot of nostalgia to help them enjoy those games despite their obviously aged mechanics. I guess some are still highly playable though, and if your into that kind of thing go for it!

Personally I think you should really check out games with good mod support, that's where PC gaming truly shines in my opinion. Games like Skyrim are constantly given new life due to mods, though if you already played it to death on a console I'm not so sure it would be worth buying again so soon.

Battlefield 2 actually has some great mods if you enjoy realistic shooters, with Project Reality being the absolute in realistic wargames as far as I am concerned.

Currently I'm playing and very much enjoying Planetside 2 Beta. Despite tons of bugs it's mostly a great time, especially if you can get some friends together. There is just something completely unique in the experience of charging down a hill towards an enemy fortification surrounded by hundreds of your allied players and vehicles, dropships thundering overhead. The basic mechanics are very simple standard shooter stuff, but in this kind of epic scale it's made wonderful...

Personal favorite RTS if Men of War: Assault Squad. My RTS-fan friends don't seem to like it at all though, so take this opinion with a spoon of salt!

Arkham City looks gorgeous on the high-end PC ultra settings, Sleeping Dogs recently came out with high-end PC flair as well. A lot of the other things I would have mentioned have already been mentioned, but the big thing to do now is to dig into the high end and play games on gorgeous settings beyond the point where a current generation console would chug. That and digital content delivery at prices that will make brand new $60 releases sound like daylight robbery.

If you haven't already start playing the Half-Life games.
Start With Black Mesa, the mod for the original half-life that just came out.

If you like Lord of the Rings

Probably my all-time favorite PC game

The bargains on Steam and GOG.

Just visit them regularly and check out any new deals.
If you see something that catches your interest, click on the link, check some screens, videos and critic scores - and if you like what you see, buy it.

(And if you're planning on playing anything that isn't an adventure, first person shooter, MMORPG or RTS, I would also advise to invest in a decent controller.)

Do you have to own the original to play that or something, or is it it's own game that you just download and play?
