Age alone doesn't necessarily make you an adult, I'm 19 and believe that 'manchild' would probably be the most accurate term though I think most people associate adulthood with self-sufficency rather than demeanour. I guess to me you're an adult when you turn 18, whether you're a mature, responsible and reasonably self sufficient adult is completely dependant on the individual in question.

Er, good for you? Happens to all of us. We all grow old and die.

Great to see how much you appreciate your parents though, I hope my kids will (I doubt it)

Do you provide for yourself? Are you going to pay college tuition and room and board using your own money? Are you gonna take out a student loan or are you on a scholarship? If you've answered no to all of them, then it sounds like you're still dependent on them (your parents).

I'm 21, and grew out of my childhood a long time ago. I was always considered more "mature" than my peers, even at a young age.

But I never became an adult. I saw the adult world, and realized I didn't belong or was wanted there. So I ended up in a limbo state between the two, strongly driven towards a third alternative.

Yet that alternative only drives me to a state where I slowly decay. Driven by a strong innate ability to fantasize, my life blends as a surreal mix of dream and reality. On top of that I stare at some incredibly tough and paralyzing questions that I need to answer to move forward.

Today I can not say where I will end up. If I'm lucky, I'll manage to recover myself. If not, I will soon fade away completely.

It's funny because it is true! Sigh....so true.

Becoming an adult is quite a confusing feeling. It's "nice" I guess because you become independent, but there in also lies the problem. Becoming independent comes with a whoooole lot of responsibilities. It kind of sucks. I really miss being a kid.

Oh come on, CRYING?

And to be honest, considering you're 20, its kinda weird you're finding some of this stuff weird (like being left home alone regularly).

This too.

The only thing I miss about being younger (say, 6 or so) was that I wasn't being put through exams and revision every fucking year.

Trust me, adulthood is a state of mind. I've been an adult for 3 years now even though I can only now purchase cigarettes.

[sub]It ain't what it cracked up to be. Cling to your childhood while you can.[/sub]

Well, most of that stuff hasn't happened for a long long time. But it helped drive the message home.

Growing up, probably the scariest thing to ever happen.

I think the thing that did it for me was when my parents could no longer help me with my homework- I had to start relying on myself.

Ive spent the last few weeks at home prior to my degree finals, spending the longest amount of time at home for 3 years- and now I dont want to leave I didnt realise how much Id missed that feeling of loving security.

You know.. I was wondering the same thing. It almost sounded like this was a recent event.

I'm glad I'm not a kid anymore. My parents still try to treat me like a kid and it's annoying. I wish I could forget that I was once a kid so I could just move on.

Yeah, being a kid was fun and all. But now I can eat ice cream for breakfast, because I fucking dare you to tell me not to.

So... yeah.

One last thing, always keep a bit of your childhood and immaturity with you. It'll help balance out the mature, adult side and won't make you act like such an un-fun prude.

Next step; Learning adults are just really tall children, but worse.

I'm 18, finished my first year of university and looking to move out in the summer with two of my best mates.

It's nice to be at the point where everything is open to you and it feels like you can do anything you want. This is one of the good bits of life, so I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Im not sure where im up to im paying for my place at college and have my own income but i still get them to keep an eye on my accounts and when im not at college i still live with them. Guess im on the precipce of self sufficency as for acting like an adult i can do that easy enough although like most people i do enjoy acting somewhat childish to help wind down
